I have a NOS Left hand selector and a NOS centre selector. However they ain't cheap, a NOS centre is extremely rare these days, commanding around £170-200. A NOS left is cheaper at around £130-150.

You want to make me an offer?

OR you can try and find some decent second hand ones, the CL350 uses the same middle selector IIRC but you'd need to find those in the states as a rule.

They might not be wrong Nigel. If they have a choke lever on the left they ain't PD carbs. Whether they are 069a or 627b or even 022a is relevant though.

TBH the selectors look toast. All have got some burning/rubbing marks.

What do the 550 ones look like?

The 550 uses a different set of fork selectors so you can't mix and match those either.

I'm still concerned about the shiny side to the journal tower. Yes, they are machined like that from the factory BUT they shouldn't still be shiny. I have 3 sets of cases apart right now and all are dull and oil stained, that's normal. That looks like it's just been done which is why it concerns me a little. I'm betting the 550 cases won't look like that. Also by the number of very small holes in the casings I'm betting something broke or wore really bad in those cases and flung little bits all over the inside. Look at the webbing right at the front of the close up pic of that shiny area, loads and loads of strike hits showing.

Try and take a pic of the bottom case, showing the inner side and top down. It's likely the primary chain has been rubbing on the oil gallery.

If they are off a K3 they'll be PD carbs.

The 550F uses 069A carbs and are totally different.

My BIL took his carbs apart the other day, for some reason he had 1x627B carb (No1) and 3x069A carbs. I have supplied him with another bank of carbs correct for his 500, when he gives me the old carbs I'll see if there is a No2 069A carb as I'll be breaking the bank and will be selling the spares off them.

Where's the corrosion Dave?

It's here Delta, took me less than a minute to find it so why you couldn't is beyond me.

As Bryan states, the right hand gear selector shows 2 required when it should read 1. Clearly Honda spotted the mistake before my parts book was released (1973 I believe) as they've corrected the error by then.

My parts list for the 500 only lists 1 of each fork selector. E18 page.

What's up with the present one.

Have you found any clutch shims yet? they tend to hide in the centre of that pictured, you can't see them but a magnet on a stick will pull them loose if there's one there.

I have one of those but it's slightly untidy. It might clean up ok though.

Let's see if anyone has a better one first eh

Yeah. well he has to repair it at his cost. Trouble is he keeps hitting me up for spare parts.

How about this.

Only 3 left, I'd buy 2 if I was you. Need to buy them whilst you can. You can always sell it later if not used.

Believe it or not but no. I did ask him the other day but he reckons he's been trying to sort the engine out for so long now he's not had the time. The engines been out of the frame and apart 5 times now just in this present year. 3 gasket sets fitted, new camchain, new primary and he still couldn't fix it. He's got the carbs apart today, it was really lumpy, didn't want to rev, sounded like it was on 2.5 cylinders at 1400 revs, just bloody awful and he kept complaining of this tapping sound from the top of the engine, changed the camcover, rockers, cam, valve stem seals. Turns out it was an exhaust blow, the exhausts are so misaligned they don't touch the copper gaskets at the head all the way around.

Sometimes it just needs another pair of eyes and ears to solve the problem.

Oh and he also has a bent crank, the rotor oscillates slightly and catches the stator, the gear change was so stiff I suspect he's also bent the gearchange shaft.

I tried Graham, hit it with a hammer and I couldn't get it past the lip. If you just tap it flush then you'll be fine.

They must have used a lump hammer to get it in that far  ;D ;D

Grease is ok, looks like plastic to me.

Just checked the 500 cases, it has the same oil hole, same diameter. However after refitting an old seal it appears it's not possible to drive the seal in enough to block the hole, the hole is lipped as you can see and the lip stops the seal before it goes to far in. It's possible to sink the seal a little if you drive it right down to the lip, so that would explain yours Jezza, however it won't block the hole.

Remove the paint from the inner surface of the clamps so it's metal to metal not metal to paint.

Cases are machine paired, if you use one you must use both, so either 500 cases or 550 cases. Not a mix and match scenario.

The damage however isn't critical, you'll just get chain lube thrown onto the oil pump with that damage.

Difference in gearbox, selector mechanism, no upper shift drum stopper, different clutch, different clutch casing, different primary drive gear and those are just what I can remember right now.

Not sure what that white stuff is on the push rod Jezza? PTFE?

Whatever it needs to come off, where it is means it will get pulled into the push rod seal and it will destroy the lip edges or at the very least force them apart so oil leaks through.

Alex, so long as that seal isn't penetrated it will be fine, it doesn't look bad TBH, good job you found it early though.

There are O-Ring chains that fit, I've run one for ages and had no problems, although the standard size is normally a 50 chain there are chains stamped as 50 but they are thinner. DID seemed to have a habit of supplying Honda with chains that aren't the same size as what they sell to the public, my DID OE 1300 chain for instance isn't the same as a normal DID chain for the 1300. You need different rivet links as the OE uses thinner pins which aren't as long.

Just fit a standard non o-ring chain with a split link and you'll be fine. If I can find the size of the O-Ring chain that does work I'll post it so you can investigate next time you need a chain. I took mine off a CBX550 I was breaking out of a crate, it worked fine and it's still lying on the garage floor so next time I go round to the garage I'll measure the links/pins etc and do a comparison.

I'll take a pic of my spare 500 cases but I'm fairly sure that seal opening is the same on the 550 cases.

Fair amount of casing damage on Matthews pic Alex, clearly had a drive chain breakage at some point.
