Title: CB400f Supersport Restomod... so far.
Post by: Integra99 on January 22, 2018, 01:25:13 PM

I usually post in the CB400 section but thought I'd post a few pics of my CB400F project as hadnt realaised this section was here and some great projects going on.

This is my second build.. my first being an XS750..

I then acquired a CB400f, a bike I've loved for many years. The tank was the wrong colour and a lot of bodges by the OP so it came apart.. originally I'd planned a restoration but having gone to a number of shows with the XS750 and the CB400f I decided to make it my own and do a restomod type project.

Here she is in her original form, bought it for £1500 from a local guy... she looks lovely but on closer inspection needed attention!

Then the strip down began about 12 months ago.. a few images..its been slow progress with other hobbies and my son racing.

Back from Delkevic with the new exhaust! Tank in primer, will be the last thing I do I think!

Back in the workshop and final prep and engine running!

I have no idea of plans for the rear mudguard and light but I pick the seat up on Thursday which is based on the original base but I shortened it a little and so I hope it turns out ok. Once the seat is on I cna get her outside and think about it with a cuppa or two!

Tank - the plan is Audi RS4 grey, with a gloss black centre stripe and two cream pinstripes.. I have deliberated over colour since the start!

Lots of small jobs to do.. and its been a tough build so far engine ran really well and so apart from valves check, new cam chain, carb total restoration and a full service I've left it alone as she ran lovely!

Front mudguard... hard to make lower without chopping the complicated stay but I plan to address this later. I've also done away with the speedo as running a GPS on a Daytona gauge.

Looking good, I really like the neat little indicators, where are they from?
Title: Re: CB400f Supersport Restomod... so far.

The indicators were from Demon Tweaks IIRC.. they were a great find and are good quality metal finish... whist I love classic bikes I'm really not keen on the huge Honda indicators.. but many aftermarket ones looked cheap, these look OEM!

Agreed, I'd like them for a Yamaha that has ma-husive inicators. Ta, I'll have a look on their website.

Bit more work this weekend so I almost have a ride able bike...  rear mudguard needs some work to fit and now anxiously waiting on my seat.. redesign to be finished. Ignore the wonky footpeg.. trying to find a replacement over the stock one!

Looking good ;D Whats it sound like with the Delkevic I have one on the Z650 and it sounds sweet (but loud :o)

I often worry about rear guards set so low, that the tyre will catch on full compression of the rear suspension. The rear frame "bridge" is 3" higher which would have originally been where the mudguard height would have been.

Ah yes its just balanced at the moment,, I need to trim it to allow it to fit up under the bridge

Nice one. Only worried me as I've seen a few hitting the guard with bad results.

Colour and paint example,  I like the red (cbx1000 original type) one in this picture. That line along the tank and seat base is quite effective in sculpting the bike's proportions.

It's surprising what such small details can contribute to the overall appearance I feel.

Both look great... i love the modified engine finish too... would love to do my engine like that but would look daft on an otherwise standard bike....

Tomb's right - you'll need to check that rear guard clearance vs. tyres when the shocks are on their bump stops - might require a bit of modification to your seat when you fit it.

Andut.. thats a tidy rear end if you dont mind me saying!! Yes its only balanced I have to trim it down.

P.s where do you run the rear number plate?

Both bikes look gorgeous.. can't wait to get some paint on it

My number plate is mounted on a bracket fixed to the redundant pillion footrest mount - it's a smallish plate but I still manage to kick it regularly and it's amazing how it manages to get tangled up on everything in the garage !

Any nearer to firing it up yet ?

Graham made this bracket for my CB550. It was based on Anduts design as he sent me a photo but changed to fit on the bottom rear shock mount.

Ah ok great.. I have the same set up on my XS750..  that looks really neat!

Off to the Carole Nash classic Bike show this weekend so will look out for some ideas.

Yes fired her up last night, sounded lovely.. I'll grab a video tonight.. she still isnt charging.. I suspect it might be a faulty earth in the loom so will track this tonight...

Cheers Paul,

You can buy a mech converter, I have one on my XS750 and it then wires into the tacho on the Daytona's. I'm running a GPS one on this bike.. not tried it yet so hopefully works but wanted really clean lines.

Hi, newbie here, love the wheels/tyres combinations, could I ask what rim/ tyres you managed to fit without clearance problems . my base project has 100 section front and rear on standard rims which look iffy !
I was hoping for 2.5 (poss 2.75 ) rear and 2.15 front ?

Thanks in advance

Pete

Hey sorry if I missed your reply, so I'm running 2.5 and 2.1 front rims,  100r and 110f tyres .. !  I wanted a 120 rear but advised handling not so good!

Hi again,I have been looking at my comstar wheels I think they may need some work to get them in a good looking useable condition. I see d silver has rims n spokes,I wondered what/whose rims you have fitted as they look good Tks again Paul

Cheers mate.. yes rims are 2.1 and 2.5 Excel rims. oversize spokes so had to drill the original hubs a little.

Some work since the last update.. finally up and running and MOT'd!  A couple of niggles then off to paint! And then the kickback show..
