Title: MOT advisory, slight free play in swing arm
Post by: SteveW on February 12, 2018, 05:12:05 PM
My imported 74 550 passed its first UK MOT today with only the one advisory.

The swing arm can be rocked left to right very slightly, does this mean new bushes etc or is there any kind of adjustment that can be carried out?

Pack it with grease.also try to tighten
The swing arm pivot bolt half a turn.

Or strip out and renew bushes

And if you  go for new bushes, phosphor bronze ones are much better and longer lasting than the standard plastic ones, and even cheaper than the plastic ones!

Does it have grease nipples on the end of rhe spindle? A quick squirt of grease now and then and it’ll be fine.

If there is play the collar will be worn more than the bushes

For me that would already be stripped out and waiting for new parts.

Yes I would get it apart before the riding season gets here. As Bryan says the collar seems to wear equally with the bushes and the collar for 550 is difficult to find. There are kits to replace with new collar and needle rollers available but these are probably inferior IMHO to good collar and bronze bushes.
The early 500 collar is listed as the same as the 750 ( 52141-300-000). Anyone know the difference 750/500/550?

Thanks for the info, who sells the bronze bushes and what sort of price?

I suppose if the collar is worn, i could get bronze bushes made to fit the worn collar?

The difference in collars is where the grease holes and nipples are, I think it works ok to fit a 500 collar in a 550 and use the single grease nipple to fill the collar--you may have to drill a small hole to let the grease get into the centre of the collar at the midpoint where the 550 nipple is

To be honest it will more than likely be cheaper to buy them, i would buy even though i have the kit to make them, time being more valuable.
