Title: Them Wigan folk
Post by: Orcade-Ian on February 22, 2018, 08:32:41 AM
We used to live in Southport and I was in a Wigan pub one day and overheard one Wiganer telling his mate that a new pub had opened nearby and you could get a pie, a pint and a woman for a quid!
His mate replied ‘I’ll bet the pies aren’t up to much’

Didn’t like Car share at first but some of the signs - like the pies one, made me take more notice.  There was one that said ‘One meal for the price of Two’. Some of the Wallace and Gromit films have similar humour designed to go over Kids heads but there for the adults,  Peter Kay in one of those too!

Farnworth, posher than Salford. Shaun Ryder is from Salford though, one of my favourite live TV moments was watching him smoke a fag while cleaning his teeth, on 'I'm a Celeb'.

'Car Share' showed events during a journey to and from work each day which completely baffled observant Mancunians as they flitted all over the place and swapped direction, including visits to Wigan as an excuse for some pie based humour. You had to keep your eyes peeled all the time for things in the background like pie lorries, a branch of 'Pies 'R Us' and a pub called 'The Dog With Two Cocks'.

There used to be a pie company called Hollands pies in Baxenden near Accrington when I used to go to that area on business. Next door was a chemical company that processed all sorts of nasty chemicals including isocyanate polyurethane products ..pies were very nice but I was always worried that that the twain may have met. The place I used to visit around there did their own  cadmium plating and the old guy who was in charge of the plating plant  used to open up his sandwiches from the  aluminium foil and put them on the top of an open  drum of the cyanide in between having a fag and a drink. Nice folk around there though and I used to nip off to Queens Park Motors in Salford, as they were having sales of loads of NOS parts at the time.

Bob Williamson sings Hollands Meat Pies (and I though it was Mike Harding!)
