400/4 jumping out of 1st gear back into neutral, don't do it in other gears, I have adjusted clutch by the manual to the best of my ability which isn't much!! but no joy, any help greatly appreciated.

Worst scenario is the dogs or slots on the gears have worn to slight tapers, but 1st gear might not be fully engaged, I would take a look at the selector mechanism if the fault persists

Many Thanks

40 was the best box and rarely gave trouble, is the gearlever movement blocked or lever bent>

Not to my knowledge , it was ok then the other day was jumping out of 1st when pulling away , I had to adjust the clutch as had a bit of slippage and that seems a bit better but gear still jumps
-
Very unusual, you need to check the change/detent mechanism behind the clutch. Do it soon as if it is the detent it will wear all the gear dogs

Engines coming out for a rebuild soon , so will stop riding it until sorted , thanks for info

In fact I took it out today in anticipation lol

I had this sort of problem for a few weeks recently, 1st gear would only engage and stay so if the engine was still cold after which it was lost. I messed with the clutch no end and worried about needing to split the crank. I had this trouble as soon as I bought her so I had the hump with the seller, an online classic bikes seller.
Then a hunch and I discovered all I ever had to do was adjust the gear change lever a few millimeters! Works fine now.

Thanks for that , i have now taken the engine out as its getting a rebuild soon , but as i was coming to undo the gear linkage i noticed it was loose but then i had the (had i or hadnt i just undone that thought ) so im hoping it was just a loose gear linkage. ;D
