Hi,
i've put the crank back in ect, joined the two cases but am now d=struggling to put the shaft thru the primary drive clutch. Its a new primary drive chain off DSS. It's close to fitting but i just cant do it. Am i missing some thing? any tips or tricks?

Perseverance is all i can say, everything has to be just right with a new chain
-
Gently lever the primary drive back, protect the crankcase with a piece of wood or something whilst you do it. Because there is no slack in the chain it's difficult to get everything to line up, which means you have a really well made chain.

I remember having issues when I fitted mine. It is a tight fit anyway and the angle has got to be spot on.

Walk away, take a break and have drink. Wait at least 30mins. Try again and it will lot straight in. Least that’s what happened to me :D.

Story of my life..

Sometimes the chain links are not fully engaged on the crank gear so you cant get it back far enough to line up the shaft. A bit of wiggling will get the chain settled on the gear and then the shaft will slot in.
Wiggling it about works in a lot of other areas! 😳

Thanks all. I'll try again at the weekend. I should have more patience at my age but it seems to have disappeared along with my ability to keep my opinions to myself ;D

Other things that dissapear with age are
Belt length, always seems to shrink
Bladder capacity
Tolerance for numpties, especally jobsworths

After prostrate cancer 3 1/2 years ago it is not a problem that I even consider these days, dream occasionally!

When I was having my groundhog days with my crank casings the first two times no problem with fitting the shaft - the third time I had issues like you - i thought I would have to split the crank case yet again - as has been said if the chain is not sitting fully engaged on the crank it just will not go that last bit - in the end whilst holding the pimary gear and shaft I rotated the crank very slightly one way then in the opposite direction and it went in a dream - I had fitted new primary drive rubbers, gears and chain as well.

Yes as a man gets older (with one exception) everything gets harder.

Luckily everything is still in full working order, just need a few more prods on the starter these days. 🙄

Just approaching 75 yrs old, and if I take my tablets I can still just get my leg over. BUT, it must have an electric starter!
-
grrrr, I cant do it, I have now split the casings again.
can someone confirm the orientation of the primary chain guide in the lower casing (which way the dot faces) the upper can only go one way. I was thinking this might be the issue if its putting some pressure on the chain??

Does this photo help?

Yours is the same as mine Ted so I guess they're the right way round.

thanks gents, I've only gone and done it.......
cant recall if my guide was the r=wrong way round, but i also felt the chain drop in on a test fit.
happy days.....

Well done, very satisfying when it goes right. 👍
