What is it? / 750 Downpipe
« on: March 03, 2019, 08:49:29 PM »
Hi, I'd got my SOHC Nighthawk 650 parked outside my house when this "old guy" knocked on my door and asked me if I wanted a spare downpipe for it as he had one from years ago when he used to ride Honda 750's and he thought that it may have been of use to me. I picked it up from him and noticed straight away that it wasn't going to be any good seeing as it bends all over place but the "old guy" was gonna bin it if I didn't take it, so I thought I'd see if it was any use to you guy's. If you know what it is from then please let me know, if you need it then it is yours but only for collection from Derby, I'm working seven days a week, getting our new (derelict) house ready and I just really haven't got the time to mess about wrapping and posting stuff. PM me if you want details.

CB650 / CB650C Recommission
« on: July 07, 2017, 11:44:48 PM »
I got a bit carried away prattling on about my CB650C in the New Members section when I first joined so I think it's about time I put it in the right place. I picked this bike up as having a "tick over problem", probably clean the carbs out and service it and she'd be good to go.......ha!. First job strip the carbs, found the problem, inside float chamber on carb 4 the casting where the brass jet screws in had been snapped and repaired (bodged) with some kind of resin. It took ages before a no.4 carb body came up for sale. So in the meantime I set about tidying the bike up, polishing, more polishing and yet more polishing. Also, the chrome on the original spoke wheels was totally shot but the budget of bugger all wouldn't stretch to a rebuild so a decent pair of Comstars were obtained through ebay for £75, that included the postage and really good tyres. The wheels have now been fitted along with new chain and sprockets, the exhausts are back on. Jobs left to do are free off the clutch, ultrasonic clean and rebuild the carbs and tidy up the switch gear, then it should be good to go! The last pic is of the greatest invention known to Mankind since the beginning of Time, an arse shaped upturned bucket, yes I really do sit on a bucket polishing my nuts!

Tricks & Tips / Blu Tac & Laggy Bands
« on: July 03, 2017, 07:10:45 PM »
Most handy for fixing those pesky exhaust gaskets and collets. A tiny, and I mean tiny blob of Blu Tac on the exhaust gasket, on opposite sides of the circle (180 degrees apart) will hold the little demons in place while you fit the system, its a good idea to give the port a wipe with a rag first to remove any loose flaky crud. Laggy bands (elastic bands to posh people) will hold the collets in place on the headers until the clamps go on and are partly tightened. Snip the laggy band with a scalpel or a pair of scissors, then pull the remains out. Start the bike, the Blu Tac will smell for about ten seconds once it gets hot but that's all, no more smell after initial start up. A blob of Blu Tac is also great for blocking up holes or whatever, wherever you don't want something else to get into, as in a temporary masking for odd or otherwise difficult shapes to mask.

Humour / Broke Down
« on: July 03, 2017, 04:55:11 PM »
A Triumph rider breaks down one fine sunny day in the countryside. He sees a BMW approaching in the distance so decides to flag the rider down and ask for assistance. The BMW rider pulls up and dismounts " Are you OK chap?" asks the BMW rider. The Triumph rider says "Have you got a wrench I could borrow?". The BMW rider opens his pannier and says "Certainly my good man, what type of wrench do you need? A monkey wrench?, a torque wrench?, a pipe wrench?.........". The Triumph rider says "It don't matter mate, I was gonna use it as a hammer".

CB650 / CB650 Nighthawk Starter Motor Problem
« on: June 21, 2017, 11:08:15 AM »
Hi folks, help needed with my new purchase, US import CB650 Nighthawk SOHC. When I try the electric start I get a clunking sound like like cogs mashing together. My question is, does this sound like a starter motor or starter clutch issue, or even both? It sounds like the cogs are slipping and doesn't turn the motor over, I rocked the bike forward and backward in gear then tried the starter again and it seemed to turn the engine for a second or two then made the same clunking sound. All I have done is pull the starter motor and looked at the cog which seemed fine, then stuck my finger in the hole and rotated the gear inside, it went clockwise freely but only went so far the other way then locked.

New Member Introductions / Hi
« on: June 05, 2017, 07:02:47 PM »
Hi all, new here. I only found out about this site through SOHC/4 Owners Club Forums the other day so I'd better come see. I'm a "Born Again Biker" that started riding again the end of last year after a long lay off. I bought a 1980 US import CB650C a couple of months ago as a poor runner (Ad said it needed tick over sorting) but after messing with it I discovered that it was a little bit more drastic than that. A PO must have been built like a gorilla because when he tried to either remove or replace one of the brass bits in the No.4 carb he managed to snap the casting inside the float bowl. I am slowly cleaning, polishing and repairing the bike to its former glory as much as my non existent budget allows. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
