Points open bang on the firing marks for 1 4 and 2 3 , i  have  put new exhaust gaskets on , dont seem to be blowing , though there is a bit of back firing over 3500 revs , the carb rubbers are all tightly fastened and seem in good nick  , its  running a bit rich though [i think] , the plugs are always sooty when i take them out.
I was thinking of checking timing with a strobe light , but dont really know what the readings should be  , mixture screw ?
or maybe change the main jet size ?

CB500/550 / carbs or timing ?
« on: September 11, 2018, 03:40:48 PM »
Hi ,
just got my  550 back together after repairing the transmission,i set the points and timing statickly with a multi meter and got it pretty much spot on with the 2  f marks and the points gap . 14 thou ,
it starts on the button and ticks over fine ,
problem is , engne misfires badly over 4000 revs , just wondered what is the best order  to check things .
bike has been chopped and is running with pods on !! [not good] though it was running a lot better  before i took engine out , though a bit rich , new plugs but same points.
cheers Paul

Hi  , just put the engine back in my 550 after doing the transmission , got all the mounting bolts in and nipped up , when i tightened the rear upper bolt ,[ m10 x 280mm long] , striped the thread !!!! didnt over tighten  it, but knew it looked a bit knackered when i took it out ,anyone know the thread pitch ? looks to be 1.00 or 1.25 .
cant source one anywhere ! so i was thinking of buying some 10mm bar and  m10 die to make one . do you think it matters whether i make it 1.00 ,  1.25 or 1.5 pitch
cheers Paul

yea evrything was located fine

Found the problem!  split cases  again,  gears spun ok , put some weight ,pressing down on needle bearing end of input shaft [clutch]and it went tight ! thought it was faulty  needle bearing but it looked ok .
i put the same  needle bearing on my original input shaft [which was un damaged]all is fine ! put the cases back and everything spins freely !!  maybe the shaft on the new transmission i got of ebay  is slightly bent , not sure

Got the cases back together ! i fit all the changing mechanism and the gear pedal.
all the gears select fine .  i,v just one small concern , maybe i,m being paranoid !
when selecting gears i was rotating input shaft {clutch not fitted yet] c/clockwise to help selection , needed a bit of effort , smooth but had to grip the shaft in palm of hand to turn it ! anyone know if this is normal . i could spin both shafts very ealily with fingers when cases were split .cheers
