Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Sleeve press near reading
« on: January 07, 2019, 03:08:14 PM »
Hey Guys,

Been trying to search for a decent engineering / machine shop near reading that would be able to press out a damaged sleeve and fit a new sleeve from another cylinder but can't seem to find anywhere, been phoning round and either they don't want to know or they've stopped offering this service.

Any recommendations?

Cheers

Have you removed the 10mm headed bolts front and back? Yes you can take the tensioner ass out if you lift the cylinders

yep removed the 10mm bolts front and back, will remove the tensioner and see if i can get the whole lot off.

I believe it's a left hand side bracket.

Got another problem you may be able to help with (I assume like most things the answer is heat) but the head and cylinder are pretty firmly attached through a gasket tried giving it a knock with a dead blow mallet but the cylinder/case gasket is coming away before the head/cylinder. Couple of questions first is, is there a good way to the head off. Second if not can I remove the tensioner, guide and remove both the cylinder and head?

Cheers

you will need a new steel bracket as the soft washer between it an the cover seals the oil in.

Yeah I thought as much, any idea where I can source one as seems like most places don't hold them.

Also know of anyone with a reasonable cam for sale?

cheers

CB500/550 / Digging into the engine a little bit
« on: November 09, 2018, 02:30:28 PM »
Hey guys,

Got a little bit of time to get the engine out (finally) after much frustration with rusted engine bolts. Was really happy to have sorted that.

Now run into something a bit bigger of an issue.

When removing the cylinder head I noticed the bolt size wasn't right on one side under the side cover. It seems someone has drilled out the original bolt and replaced with a bigger size.

Next I notice that not only have they just drilled this out and cut a new thread they've left all the metal shavings in so there are bits of metal around the hole coming away and tiny bits in the oil.

Which appears to be wearing around the cam

As the hole drilled through the cylinder head also goes down into the cylinders is it worth looking for a replacement head. Also I have one of the heads with the additional 4 bolts at the top. If I can source a new head would any head from a 550 fit?

Also is it worth replacing the cam in this? (pics in next post)

Thanks

CB500/550 / Engine degrease and oxidation removal
« on: July 30, 2018, 07:47:51 PM »
Hey guys,

It has been a while, sorry for no updates on my project, however I've had quite a few big changes of late.

Deaths in the family, moved house (better garage) and the wife had a baby so lots of sleepless nights.

However finding the odd hour here of there where I can work on the bike so beginning to strip it down. It's pretty corroded and looks like someone has had a poor attempt at breaking it down in the past so a few stripped screws and bolts to tackle. Anyway mostly tackled these now with the exception of 3 completely stripped JIS screws on the clutch cover.

Next job will be to remove the engine for disassembly / inspection. however before I go too far I want to do a quick degrease of the engine, removal of old engine paint and hopefully tackle some of the oxidation.

Anyone got any tips on the best de-greasers and any way to remove oxidation.

Pics hopefully attached.

Cheers

Yes you can clean a set of carbs in a bank but, you need to make sure that every air and fuel way is clear and clean  ;) This can be done with a air line, as the ultrasonic cleaner will loosen shite but not remove it .
On the slow running jet, never poke anything down the centre of this jet. If you hold it up to the light and look in the hole, you will see a spider. This needs to be intact for the jet to do its job  ;)

Ok cool yeah I removed all the jets and replaced them but not the air screw, I'll take it apart and make sure I've done it properly now worth doing this so I know it's complete.

Thanks again for the help Trigger

I am a little confused about some of your comments, you state that you had stripped the carbs and ultrasonically cleaned them but, was this done with the air screws in ? To get these puppy's clean they need to be stripped completely to clean properly.

(Attachment Link)

Nope I confess, I didn't do a complete strip down to the individual carbs, I was advised I could do the entire bank together however I did take most of the screws apart with the exception of the drain screws which are completely seized and the air screws which I forgot.

Worth going back over it again and for the air screws?

OK ordered some new spark plugs just waiting for them to arrive.

Next step was to replace the regulator rectifier and the dodgy solenoid. The reason for the replacement of the rectifier was the bodge job someone has done in the past wasn't filling me with confidence it actually came apart when I was trying to remove it.

I also noticed the air mix screws were quite significantly out from what the manual said, so set these back to 1  1/2 turns.

And I've installed some velocity stacks instead of the pods. I'm going to continue along checking all the service items as suggested and see if anything is off.

I have a feeling I'll need to open up the engine at some point.

Cheers for your help

What are the plugs you are using ?

NGK Iridium IX Spark Plug DR7EIX

You only need basic plugs D7EA or D8EA  ;) You should ask a member on here (Norniron ) about Iridium plugs on his cafĂ©  ;D

Cheers trigger I'll do that, does it matter which plugs go on the 7 or 8?

Cheers for the replies guys, I think its running extremely rich at the moment I assume due to the fact I'm mostly running with the choke on.

I popped out a spark plug just to check the state (these are brand new just been installed) they were a lot darker than in the picture (think this was after I got rid of some of the blackening)

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

I'll pop my velocity stacks on it next to see how much of a difference that makes, I also might take a look at the air screw.

For the seriously hot front pipes, what would that normally indicate? exhaust valves? timing incorrect?

Cheers
