You never know what life will come up with Ted, could be tomorrow, could be 20 years from now. I'm thinking another 30 years will do me, after that I may start getting bored  ;D ;D

I'd be interested to know why the K0 was not imported and oddly enough why the Jade Green one was never a UK option. I'm betting there was some outside pressure behind the decision, especially when you read those reviews, best bike Honda ever made is one description of the 500, superior to the 750 in handling, price and comfort, why would you not import that kind of product.

Doesn't seem to matter if it is Ted, I think it's more critical for all the recesses to be filled so they don't harbour water and rust it silently until it bursts through the other side. Do your new bars, just block the holes, thin the paint ever so slightly, fill the bars completely and then drain out. Check in 10 years and you'll see they are still rust free.

Skimming the head is not too problematic but carefull with the block as skiming reduces the depth of the O ring grooves, which is actualy advantageous as head gaskets are thicker than they used to be so for standard blocks thicker O rings are needed.
You may find the valve timing very slightly out due to chain length

It would be the block surely Bryan? the recess for the o-ring is in the block, the head has just a hole so skimming it would make no difference to the o-ring thickness.

Use zinc182 paint Ted not the spray. If you look at the mudguard I sent you you can see all the voids are filled, even the inner part of the wire tunnel is done, I blocked the bottom of the tunnel and filled it with paint and then drained it out. You can also just fill all the rolled edge voids by putting more on the brush, which you can't really do with spray.

I've been doing this since the 70s and when I sold a rear mudguard that I had done 30 years before it was still mint under the paint, even if the paint gets scratched it still protects near it.

Places I commonly do it are inside the headlight rim, inside the fork ears and down the fork tube on them, inside the points cover, inside the handlebars, front mudguard when I was using a metal one, inside the wheel rims, back of the exhausts to name those I an just think of.

Not sure if I still have it but I have another road test of the 500 that’s not on that list. In fact it’s a magazine of numerous road tests from that era, I’ll see if I can find it.

Try restoring an old oil using the Ash method. Far more reliable and a good sense of satisfaction when you fix on destined for the bin.

The only thing I recall about the 550 clutch was telling people not to move the lever when the casing was off the engine as it would go past the fulcrum point and the internal lever used to over reach and you had to struggle to get it to go back into position without dismantling the mechanism.

Got a reply back from HondaUK regarding why they decided not to import the CB500K0 back in the early 70s. As expected they know nothing. They do seem to claim that all UK CB500K0 came from Europe though. Back door imports it looks like.

Dear Mr. Pimlott,

Thank you for contacting Honda UK.

We do not have any information logged within our systems regarding the CB500K0 model. After doing my research, I can see that they have been indeed manufactured for the European market, which means that at a later time people started importing them to the UK.

You can also ask our colleagues from Chiswick Honda. They are our biggest dealership in the UK and they will have more information on the matter.

Contact details for Chiswick are:

Should you need assistance with anything else, do not hesitate to contact us back.

Thank you again for contacting Honda UK.

Kind Regards,

I may ring Honda Chiswick and see if they have any more info. I seem to recall that was HQ for HondaUK back in the day, Power Road or something like, I seem to recall it being near Kew Gardens which I wanted to go in but my mates weren't so keen as it was a bit of a walk.

Don't know why but I forgot about the cable retainer on the lower brace, saying that I stopped using the chrome type mudguard back in the 80s. Far too prone to rust and damage.

That looks correct, if it's fitted to the crankcase and thus pushing up against the clutch you won't get any more movement than that unless something is really wrong. The punch marks line up so that means it's in the right position. To get more movement you're going to need the cable attached.

I think the time frame was to give time for the Molasses etc to work but also I suspect to show what just leaving parts to soak can do to them if you’re not careful
