Actually only the US got a different right hand switchgear on the K0, the European countries got the same as the UK one, it's in the parts book.

The only difference I can think of off the top of my head that some European countries got was a slightly different airbox, which had a snorkel fitted over the top of the airbox. To suit this snorkel the carbs were changed so it ran with smaller jets, not 100% sure but Germany and maybe Holland comes to mind.

Check the carb body on No4 cylinder, on the flange will be a number stamped into the body, 623B is the standard carb for a 500, if that's different then it's a definite Euro bike.

Just been and checked my original 1970s handlebars Ted and I cannot see any bracing at all, the bars are quite thick metal so they might have relied on that for strength. Only had 1 set of bars bend (not snap) and they didn't bend where the holes were at all, they bent where they bend downwards.

£38, snap em up Ted. Let us know if the are drilled for the locating pegs as well and if they are punch marked, would be interesting to know.

No, the K0 never officially came to the UK, they'd have shipped them to Europe instead, which is where yours has come from I reckon.

According to the head mechanic at Honda, who I asked about the 500 when at a training course in the late 70s approx only 3 were officially imported by HondaUK, these were gold, black and brown. One was written off whilst being test ridden by a magazine, the general consensus was it was the black one IIRC, the gold disappeared and the brown was sold to an employee who later scrapped it.

Enjoyed that, wasn't aware they used essentially buffing compound on the linishing machine. Got to buy myself a linishing machine, getting pits out of metal is very time consuming.

Only criticism is that they did a really nice job of the front but ignored the back of the bumper entirely, suppose though they only have so much metal to work with.

Just go up a size and fit greens if the crank looks ok.

First reg Aug 72 Bryan, most likely brought from Europe to complete an order as the K1 might have been all sold out at that time. My K1 is registered earlier than that. August would have been new reg day so dealer might have oversold and have shipped one in in desperation.

Yep, that's a K0.

Be aware that when the 3 test ride bikes were shipped in by Honda (I found the reg number of the Gold one the other day, GTT 131K, it's no longer registered BTW) the bike magazines were very critical of the right hand switchgear, they found it was far too easy for the rider (especially wearing gloves) to accidentally turn the lights off completely when going form high to low, resulting in total darkness and lets be honest, if you've got main beam on you're somewhere bloody dark. As a result Honda changed that switchgear and fitted a separate On/Off switch on the other side of the bars. You may want to keep the switchgear as it is original but if so watch what you're doing when you use it.

As you are an OAP like myself, I'll do it at £5 inc P&P.

PM me if interested.

I have my own stash Peter, been collecting parts now for 40 odd years, I have thrown loads away recently as the shed roof collapsed and ruined quite a few parts. In the late 70s I had so many banks of carbs I was throwing them on the tip. Seems silly now.

If you decide No3 carb needs to be replaced I have one spare for a reasonable fee. A bank of carbs BTW is averaging between £120-160 depending on condition, they can be worth more split but then you need to sell all the parts to make a decent profit.

Should be marked with thread direction, it's reverse from normal, so righty tighty becomes righty loosey.

Personally I'd sell the existing switches, the ones for the K3 are very rare for some reason. I've known K3 owners search for ages to find one. You could buy new switches with what you get for the K3 ones.

550K3 switches Ted, not been altered by the look of them. Does it have the pass/horn button or just a horn button, can't see.

You have a choice, reuse them and run the wires outside the bars, replace them but then you have another choice, go with 550F switches that look like you already have or go back to the original 500 switches, in which case you're going to need to source a On/Off handlebar switch for the lights.

Another alternative is just to find the bodies off a 550F and swap the internals over. You only really need the bottom pieces.

I'm unsure Mick if the earlier shape is suitable for the F model due to the longer seat it got. It would probably fit but the rail would be so close to the seat it might be unusable for the passenger.

Not on the DS copies then Phil, you’d think DS would specify that when he ordered them.

I have 500 bars on mine with 550 top yoke and clocks and it never hit anything, maybe it’s different market bars that did that. Even so, as Teds going 550 onto 500 he should be fine with the 550 bars.

Ted, can you post a pic of your switchgear especially from underneath to see if they’ve been altered to allow the wires to go outside the bars.
