After a few minutes studying the 500 tank and side panels I decided to buy it. Cost of a respray for my current tank and panels is around £350-400. Plus there is a petrol tap on it, side panel and tank badges as well. Tank badges can go for £40-50 a pair and side panel ones around the same. Then the tank itself is worth £200 or so. So all in all a good deal.

I’ll be removing the tank cap and latch to replace with new ones and fitting some chrome trim around the edges.

TBH it was the colour that made me buy it, Starlight Gold is what I intended to have my 2 spare tanks done in so it saves me the bother of having them done right now.

I’ll see what the paintwork looks like in the flesh when it arrives, it looks fine in the pics but it might not be when seen up close.

Glad to hear you weren’t going to buy it Seabeowner as I felt a little guilty jumping in like that but I suspected it would go quickly and I thought asking you if you were going to buy it beforehand may mean we both missed out.

Got an idea on how to renovate the old petrol cap, they do seem to be prone to having the chrome go all spotty. Got a couple of old ones I can take apart to see how they can be repaired.

Check the advance/retard unit, can you see a number next to where the spring mounts to the left of the 1-4 marking? Just turn the crank clockwise a little and if it’s there you should spot it. There are 2 types of advance/retard mechanisms and on one the dot goes on the same side as the Tec marking but on the other it’s on the opposite side.

Explain the shims comment as there are no shims for the points? You just loosen the screw holding the points to the plate and use a screwdriver to alter the gap, around 14-16 thou iirc. I always use a dwell meter to set the point gap as you can do it whilst the engines running. I’d do the gap as above for the initial setting though. Try lowering the gap a little, seem to recall Nigel recommending 12 thou. Don’t do metric sorry, old school.

Roy is that a spare points cover on the engine? You mentioned it was really bad but the chromer did a good job of mending it and tbh it looks ok in the pic of all the chrome parts but in the engine pic you can clearly see all the denting etc and the chrome looks faded, like it’s really old. Is it the same cover?

One very close to Derby that did Sesman and Grommitdogs tank and side panels for £350. Looked a decent job as well and in Candy paint. Maybe ask Phil or Nigel for details, might be more expensive now due to energy prices going up.

500 tank looks to be in Starlight Gold, K0 colour only. Same colour as mine on a K1 and personally I prefer it to the Candy Gold Custom of the K1. That's worth the money.

550 tank looks to be a 750 one to me, wrong petrol cap as well.

I have the receipt somewhere, my mum and dad registered me for warranty purposes, I got a really nice certificate saying what day my warranty started. It says it's a lifetime guarantee but as with most things they always seem to find a loophole to avoid claims. The company is called NHS, which I understand means Not Here Sir when you ask if that's the place to go to get repairs.

I seem to recall they were blown up versions of the diagrams in the genuine Honda manual. Surrounded by a border and a large Honda symbol.

Yeah, they were, one was an exploded diagram of the engine as shown on page 19 and the other of the lubrication system on page 36.

They may be available if they are sold off when a store closes.

Similar to this but mounted on very thick cardboard and laminated.

One other comment I heard, and I don't know the medical facts, virtually all the cells in our body have been replaced multiple times in our lives. Are we the same person we used to be?

Who do I complain to with regards to warranty, as my new cells aren't even close to being as good as my old cells.

Someone on another forum wanted ideas on routes for the traditional Lands End to John O' Groats ride. It got me thinking, has anyone ever heard of anyone riding the same route but keeping to the coastline whenever possible? In theory you could actually start anywhere and end in the same place. Looking at Google maps for instance you can see some peninsulas are only served by one road, so I'd say that excludes that part of the country, you can't use the same road for more than say 1 mile. Not sure how many miles it would cover but certainly quite a few more than the traditional route and of course take far longer but the scenery would be much better and all the sea air would give you some lovely rosy cheeks  ;D ;D

Been saying that for years Bruce. Unless it's just come out of a crate or has never been ridden no bike is original.

Remembered seeing a Titanic kit for sale, made of out tin plates which you rivetted together to get that authentic look and the anchor chain was made of individual brass links, was around 1978 and it was around £200. To rich for my blood back then but IIRC it was 14" long or thereabouts.
