Title: Seat base
Post by: onethumb on July 17, 2016, 11:40:05 PM
Hi all, going to start making th seat base soon and wanted to ask for ideas. Thinking of using 2mm steel or 3mm aluminium. Then there was the thought of a polly nylon kind of material. Then today I saw the old original seat unit that is in quite good shape which I was going to sell as the cover is 8/10 the unit 7.5/10, but as it's just sitting there ready to be used.
Any ideas or thought ?

Thanks.

I would make one. as the original probably won't suit the style your going for . And it won't cost the earth to do .

What style seat are you going for? I made my brat style seat (flat with a kick up at the back) out of 3mm aluminium and it is plenty thick enough. I wouldn't want to go any thinner in aluminium though.

Yozzer, I really didn't want to destroy a pretty good seat unit.
Valentinik ive got a 20deg kick up on mine, did you weld any of yours, how did you attach bits to the unit. I can't weld aluminium.

Use rivets to fasten things on to base

I can weld aluminium but mine was a flat piece that I then put a bend in to suit the kick up of the frame section. I used rivnuts into the aluminium plate and then welded 2 flat pieces of steel across the frame for the bolts to go into. I'd planning on using more rivnuts to hold all of the electrical items to the underside of the pan too.

If you want any specific pictures of mine just let me know and j can take some.

Mike

Ill be making something similar in the near future and this is how i envisage doing my seat base. The one thing i haven't figured out yet is do you weld the nuts on to the top of the aluminium, glue foam on top, shape, then have the entire thing upholstered (including the underneath side) and then cut holes for access to the nuts? Or does the upholster leave holes in the material for the fixings?

I've had the pan powder coated black so that the underside doesn't need to be upholstered and you have access to the bolts. I will be bolting all the electrical items to the underside of the pan anyway

ok cool, i just can't get it in my head how the upholsterers leave the bottom of the seat pan bare
