Title: Oil pipes tank to engine
Post by: SteveCR7 on January 30, 2019, 10:45:35 AM
I am restoring a CB750 that has stood for many years. The oil tank contained oil so wasn’t left dry. Can anybody tell me if the oil pipes degrade internally over time if the oil is not circulating for long periods. I am assuming there is an internal rubber hose and I don’t want to find this is disintegrating and blocks the oil ways.

Thanks Steve

They can collapse internally, with obvious results. Somewhere on the forum is an old thread on my CB750 which had oil pressure issues, I started with the hoses. (And ended up changing the crank - it's a long story). I got new ones from Germany, via eBay.

After two classic Honda restorations I've come to the conclusion that anything old and made of rubber should be treated as scrap.

Steve - get them replaced 100% if it's sat for a long time and you're suspicious. There's a chap in Germany who sells re-conditioned units (much cheaper than DSS). Think I've shared his details on the forum somewhere? (sorry don't have them to hand now).

Hi Steve,
I replaced my hoses last year at our local industrial hydraulic repair centre "mend-a-hose" they just replace the pipe and crimps onto the existing castings. They look great and very good value compared to DS parts.

James gave me the details of the guy in Germany (if the look of originality is important to you), I will post on here as soon as I locate them.

Cheers
Rob

I  ended up changing both of mine to mend-a-hose specials... £35 each is a bargain and they look very neat, so long as your not looking for "best in show original restoration at the local VJMC rally"

Sorry to hijack the thread but if anybody is ordering anything from Yamaya, I need oil seals (about £3.50)
http://www.yamiya750.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21_66&products_id=1974
as I has the very slightest leak fron the oil tank on the CR Rep - but postage is 2200 yen! (£15)
Thanks

I use soft copper washers on my oil lines...a few pence from the local diy shop, you can’t see ‘em and they work a treat..... or you could use an o ring.... no high pressure to resist.

Is there no Dowty Seals that will fit. A common seal used in the hydraulic industry. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bonded-Seal-Washers-Dowty-Sealing-Washer-Hydraulic-Oil-Petrol-Sealing-Washers/132585478534?hash=item1edeb5d986:m:mPrtxEP2Ee3f-sLFUDzLwJw:rk:1:pf:1&frcectupt=true

I googled mend a hose and there is one not far from me so that looks like the no1 solution.  Already getting great advice on this forum.

Cheers Steve

They are suppliers to industry but they have a trade counter and my local outlet (Castleford) was happy to re-tube mine... did them while I waited... The stuff they use is stainless braided in metric size, not imperial like the original.. The guy mentioned that it was a little tight on the fitting but went on OK and crimped up fine, they couldn't offer their normal no-leaks warranty due to this, but as its not a pressure application there is no problem. The tube is about £85 / metre, total cost was about £35 each. I had mine done separately because one was leaking as soon as I put oil in the tank... a week later I noticed the other was also leaking but less noticeable.. Both have been perfectly dry since fitting and I think they look fantastic in braided stainless. If you get both of yours done at the same time you may get a better price than I did..?? Let us know how you get on.

I probably won’t be getting the pipes done immediately unless they are not serviceable to get the bike running but will post when I get them sorted.
