CB500/550 / CB550 back end reworked, need a bigger shed
« on: February 09, 2018, 03:38:12 PM »
Happy how my re-engineering of the back end worked out.
I didn't want to chop the frame (so it could be reverted to stock in future).
Got an old set of front and rear mudguards cut down and fitted LED rear lights, flasher unit and indicators.
Plus all LED in instrument illumination.
All seems to work fine, maybe too bright now 8)

Just need to work out what thead the old front indicators are to install some caps?
Exhaust silencer was handmade by previous owner and sounds good :o :o

« on: April 12, 2017, 08:28:45 PM »
Hi everyone,

Having some trouble with this headight.Cannot seem  to get the glass to fit in the housing.

The housing and ring are fine, but the glass parts and two rings don't seem to match up.

The glass was my spares box, it may not be off a 550f1?

Any ideas.

CB500/550 / CB550f1 petcock to carb fuel line routing
« on: April 12, 2017, 08:23:20 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm replacing the perished fuel lines on my 550f1 and bought some cloth covered lines.

The routing from twin petcock outlet to carbs seems tight and I can't seem to get it good without crimping it.

I stilll need to cut to length.

Any ideas?, Does anyone have any photos a nice routing example?.

Cheers neil

CB500/550 / DIY engine painting..help!
« on: February 19, 2016, 05:38:58 PM »
Hello everyone,

Sure this has come up loads.
Looking for ideas/options for DIY painting my engine on a budget (without taking it to bits)  whilst the frame is away being powdercoated.

The bottom end looks like it has been painted before and is started to come away(original finish?) whilst the top end is pretty dirty, which I've started to clean it up, but the black muck is pretty tough.

I think I would like to keep it silver.
How best to approach this? I guess prepartion is the key (literally!! for the painting)

Do I fully clean and degrease (with e.g a toothbrush and....?)  then mask, primer and spray.
If so which products and process do members recommend?

Not having much luck with the cleaning so far...

Many thanks in advance
Cheers Neil

CB500/550 / CB550F cafe style seat ideas?
« on: January 31, 2016, 02:50:33 PM »
Hello everyone.

I'm looking for ideas/experiences for my seat, into more of a café style for a newbie.
Ideally I want a flatter ribbed brown cover on the original pan.

Got a grab rail from SOHC, which I will get powdercoated with the frame.

The seat cover had a big tear and was letting in water for many years. I managed to get the cover and strap off, the pan is a bit rusty, but OK. The foam whilst being pretty smelly, had dried out fine and is complete.

I've seen videos of shaving the foam down and getting the seat upholstered, guess this isn't a cheap option.

Any ideas, thoughts, ideas are greatly welcomed

CB500/550 / CB550F Mudguard flaps
« on: January 30, 2016, 12:53:22 PM »
Hello everyone,

Looking for some info on these curious rubber mudflaps which were fitted to the ends of the chrome mudguards on my 78 CB550F.
Haven't seen them on another model?

One is made in Japan, the other Italy.
Were they an optional extra? Aftermarket? They have "HM" ( Honda Motorcycles?) on the logo.

Newbie to SOHC.
I bought a '78 CB550F in November. It had been sat in a back yard for almost 20years (under tarp)
Tax expired 96.

It's done 17,000 miles and all looks complete, it runs ok but need a fair bit of work.

Plan is to cafe it a bit, without major frame change

Rust has set in, so I'm replacing wheels/spokes, new tyres.
Will powder coat frame/swing arm. Brakes are siezed, engine need servicing, carbs need setting up. Electrics are a bit weak, new seat design (based on original pan)….etc etc

I'm trying to do all the work myself (except painting) so may need lots of advice and parts.

Thanks for your help in advance !!!

Cheers Neil
