Title: Honda ss50 indicators
Post by: Pmd31421 on July 06, 2017, 11:13:52 AM
Hi , I'm only getting 4.5v at my indicators and nothing at my headlight . It's got a brand new battery and the horn works fine . Running out of ideas ?

What's the battery voltage?

Check for bad/poor earths

This is the only planet where we call the chassis connection an earth.

Alright, circuit return path connections if you prefer.
My bike is quite muddy though :o

Battery output is 6.5 volts.
I've just had the frame plastic coated

Just for the sake of fault finding, connect a jump lead from the battery negative to the earth on the indicator bulb and see what effect that has.  Actually,  do the same on both bulbs - front and back.

Definitely need to clean up all earthing points. I use a dremel or similar to clean away the powder coat.
Mikes wise suggestion will bypass any earthing issues and prove definitely if thats the problem.

good luck.

Don't remember voltages but seem to remember the buggers wouldn't flash unless the engine was running

Agree with Bryan on that one .. Long term...  possibly use LED replacements if they are available for 6V systems

I have a c100 and the indicators do not flash unless the engine is running and generally needs a rev to get em going

Same thing with the headlamp;  using the jump lead, supply a negative return to the headlamp bulb and see if it works

Lights only work with engine running

Lights only work with engine running
And barely better than a candle until 1/2 throttle or more!

It could still be an earth fault.   If the headlamp circuit is losing a couple of volts because of a bad earth then revving the engine will increase the voltage at the battery but will still be less volts across the bulb because of the poor earth return.  I get it all the time at work;  engineers not checking the neutral voltage.

I think the Headlamp works direct from a coil in the generator, yes a bad earth will reduce power on anything but so will a corroded power connector or switch or even a bad generator, these magnets are getting old, just like most of us now

Hi def not the earths . I ran individual cables back to the battery - .pole.
However the taillight is now working , even tho the stubborn headlight still won't have none of it .
I didn't realise bike had to be running for lights , even tho it's not made any difference .
Check the charging voltage at battery with engine running ..... approx 6.57 volts .

May seem a silly question, but have you tested the headlight bulb to be sure it's working? If that checks out okay, test the wires from the headlight back to each join/ connection, working back through the high/low beam switch (I'm assuming you are aware that the ign switch controls the lights on/off on some Ss50 models) then trace back to ign switch, paying special attention to all bullet connectors for cleanliness and tightness. Let us knowvhow those checks go.

Is the flasher relay okay? Also check lamp wattages are correct as incorrect wattage lamps installed will affect the operation of the indicators
