Misc / Open / Historic status.
« on: April 01, 2022, 12:08:56 PM »
Another hits the 40+ mark. Might as well put it on the road, it’s not going to cost anything. Went to local post office to apply for historic status fully expecting to pay the road tax and then having to claim it back when the historic status changes. Pleasantly surprised when I came away with twelve months road tax without paying anything. Happy days!

CB750 / Could do better.

There must have been a bit of desperation to get this advertised. I hope it didn’t leave the showroom in this condition as the ad suggests.

CB500/550 / Raising that needles.
« on: March 13, 2022, 09:32:06 AM »
Since we are all waiting for some nice spring weather, what a great time to get that bike out of hibernation and get it road ready. I have taken the plunge and raised the carb needles up one notch to try and increase the amount of fuel to engine. The reason for this was poor starting (when cold) then you would have to ride a good couple of miles before thinking of shutting off the choke. Also on higher revs probably 4000 ish to accelerate beyond there was a hesitance and easily corrected by closing the choke thus proving a lack of fuel. I have previously tried different settings on mixture screw also these carbs have been taken off and stripped at least three times. These are PD46a carbs. I had drained the carbs about 5-6 months ago before winter storage but unfortunately I had a bleed from fuel tap which I have sorted now. So there was fuel lying in the carbs but I do have Frost “ethmoix” added to fuel to prevent varnishing. The bike fired up immediately! It’s never done that before in the last thirty odd years especially after winter lay up, and had to open up choke almost right away to keep her running. But boy she is running rich. Will probably have to close down the mixture screws a bit to try and lean out. Then I will see how she goes out on the road when the weather improves. But I do feel as if I am flogging a dead horse here but it is interesting to try something different. What you think Bryanj, chuck these carbs in the skip? 🤣🤣🤣

Misc / Open / Oil
« on: February 21, 2022, 05:06:24 PM »
Local motor factor here has stock of 15w-40 mineral oil but no 10w-40. Considering that this would allow me to use in - 15c instead of - 20c I can’t see that would be a problem. I know this subject had been flogged to death, but my question is any problem with using 15w-40 in these classic Honda’s? If it is negative anything outside I don’t think I will be jumping on the bike.

Misc / Open / Unidentified part.
« on: February 20, 2022, 06:33:51 PM »
I would be some chuffed if somebody could identify this part. I had stripped a clutch from a C90 and was cleaning all parts in a tray with a mixture of diesel and petrol, and when it came to emptying out the tray in among the waste oil this clonked out of the bottom of the tray. I’m quite certain it’s not part of the clutch having checked the parts list. So can anybody identify the part. It is a mystery.

CB500/550 / Little history behind my 550K3
« on: January 28, 2022, 12:21:05 PM »
Wish I could say that my 550 had been a well loved example, but afraid not. In the late seventies I greatly admired and was a bit envious of a local chap who used to cruise about on this always shining example of this lovely Honda. Yes there was a load of other great looking bikes at the same time, most of them leaving an oily blue mist behind them, RD’s X7’s etc. I never got round to sitting my bike test then as I had an old car and couldn’t afford bike as well. Fast forward 5 years or so and with the introduction of two part test I sat and passed bike test first time. Timing was not very good regarding finance at this time, driving for the local council and earning a little extra as a retained firefighter (it helped a lot) we probably felt as if we were doing ok, having got our feet on the property ladder and number two daughter on the way. I was walking home from work one Friday and stopped in by a local second hand car dealer for a chat (he was quite a character) and assured you that he wouldn’t be frightened to go to London in a particular vehicle that you expressed an interest in, knowing full well that you would be lucky to make it to the ferry port. He said to me “beuy I’ve got the very thing for you, come and see this. And this is what I was presented with. Picture 1. O my! What happened to that lovely bike that I used to admire. Anyway we agreed on £210 for the bike. Fast forward a few months and after a lot of sand paper steel wool, chrome cleaner and good old Hammerite paint, managed to make a runner out of the wreck, as in picture 2. That was to be my only machine for the next 12 years until I bought the Matchless G3 for restoring. Financial situation had thankfully changed considerably. Fast forward again to around 2015 I thought about selling the 550 and getting something else, the exhausts were rotting she didn’t run very well and needed much work. When exhausts came on the market once again I decided to bite the bullet and get a new set. That was the start of a major commitment to carry out a full restoration which was done over the following couple of years (with a couple of time outs during this time). I never met the previous owner of the 550 but I fear we wouldn’t have had much in common. The bike was only 8 1/2 years old when I bought it.

Misc / Open / Electronic ignition with fixed advance.
« on: December 21, 2021, 10:59:17 PM »
Hi, I am puzzled slightly on refitting the dyna s electronic ignition that came with the bike, I noticed that there is a pin that the rotor slot locates onto along with the weight lobes that prevents the rotors returning to unadvanced position. I could easy remove it but it was probably put there for a reason. I can post pics but I actually stripped the unit and is sitting in thinners overnight because it was covered in some sort of grey paint overspray.

Misc / Open / Plastic throttle tube.

Quick question! Lube or no lube? Maybe a little on the cable end but not on the bars? I’ve not had any bother in the past but just wondered about the correct or recommended application.

CB750 / 3/8th” or 10mm brake fittings?
« on: December 08, 2021, 10:21:26 AM »
Anybody shed any light on this compatibility issue. I purchased a new brake pipe along with brake hoses for my bike a number of months ago I tried to fit this morning but discovered that the old pipe fittings are 3/8th” and the new pipe and hose is 10mm with slightly different thread pitch. Anybody else had this issue?
