Other Bikes / Wiring question
« on: February 16, 2024, 06:11:49 PM »
Hi,
Hope someone can advise on wiring size as I'm getting a bit confused.
It's for a XT250 which is 6v and I've only ever worked on 12v before.
The loom and attached wiring connections have been hacked about and various wires replaced, spliced, shortened and generally bodged so I'm looking at making up a full new loom as I'll also need to extend some wires where the PO cut and reconnected them.
From Googling around I believe that with 6v systems you need to increase the wire size due to increased amps - normally used 1mm wire on most parts of previous loom repairs on 12v bikes.
I'm not sure if I can simply go for 2mm for everything in the loom or if any wires need to be anything larger - nothing looks much different in the old loom but I don't really know enough to be sure.
Any advice very welcome before sitting down to work out the list of colours and cables needed.
Cheers,
Andy

SOHC Singles & Twins / ATU springs
« on: February 07, 2024, 06:00:15 PM »
Hi,
Looking to do a bit of fettling on the CJ360t and one thing I  didn't sort last year was the springs on the ATU which were quite rusty and weak.

I've been keeping an eye out for a better unit but no luck so far.

From some random googling I did find a site selling new springs for the CB400 - 750 range and I wondered if anyone knew if these would be any good for the CJ.

Cheers,
Andy

Other Bikes / Bearings
« on: November 16, 2023, 04:57:41 PM »
Hi,
Hoping for a bit of education / advice on replacement bearings if possible.
Working an an XT250 which has had a tough life and various bits of damage in the bottom end so I'm looking to replace most of the bearings as a couple felt a bit notchy.
I can find like for like bearings for most of them online at pretty reasonable costs but there are two bearings that have an 'SH' marking on them and I can't figure out what importance this has.
It seems from Googling that this denotes a heat treatment of some kind but the bearing companies I've checked with haven't had any detail or advice and just suggest going with the standard bearing and ignore the 'SH' bit.
I think this may be what others do - as an example Yambits show a replacement bearing for one of the SH ones (no detail on the exact bearing in the description of course) and it's only about £10 so I'm guessing it is an economy bearing of the standard type at that cost.
Maybe someone has some experience on this which would be really appreciated.

Andy

Misc / Open / Any idea what these fit?
« on: June 17, 2022, 05:57:56 PM »
Hi,
Sorting through bits from the 400 build and the bike came with these [ Guests cannot view attachments ] shocks in one of the boxes but I don't think they are for the 400 as they seem too long.
Hole centres are 340mm
Any ideas what they would been designed for?

CB350/400 / Mead Speed fairing
« on: April 21, 2022, 04:53:50 PM »
Hi,
Clearing out some very old piles of bits and pieces and came across an old and incomplete sports fairing I'd been given some time back in the 80's.
It's been in the attic / shed ever since and I had no idea what bike it was even for.
Pinged a couple of photos to Mead Speed - still going and they kindly replied that it was for a 400/4 and no longer made.

No idea if it's of any interest to anyone - I guess maybe on the very long off-chance someone needs some replacement bits.
Could stick it on eBay I guess, otherwise it'll have one final exciting race to the skip.

Misc / Open / Triumph Stag
« on: April 20, 2022, 11:52:01 AM »
Hi,
Having the garage over-filled with bikes and projects, obvious thing is to consider buying an equally unreliable old car for a laugh.
No real reason as I have never really been very interested in cars but am considering a Triumph Stag for a bit of summer bimbling.
Anyone have any words of wisdom or warning before I begin my novice journey as a salesman's dream buyer.

Misc / Open / International parcel post
« on: April 13, 2022, 09:58:23 AM »
Hi,
Hoping someone can offer a bit of advice.
I'm finally clearing out some of the accumulated 'treasures' from the bike sheds and have started listing various bits on eBay.
So far been reasonably simple for a newbie to selling anything but I've got a couple of bits on which have got interest from abroad and I've no idea what's involved in posting these.
From a very dull Google session I can manage UK postage but didn't really grasp the international side.
Current example is a set of clocks for a GS1000S so a medium size but quite fragile package and a guy in Australia has asked what cost would be to send this.
From experience, does anyone know where to look for costs on postage, explanation of paperwork involved.
Finally any views on whether posting overseas is 'reasonably' safe or a very high risk.

Any views and advice very welcome!

Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Selling frame but keeping engine
« on: April 05, 2022, 08:47:23 AM »
Hi,
Finally getting around to clearing some of the collected projects and parts from the sheds and have even sold for the first time on eBay - a rusty Harris 4-1 for a GS1000 that got more interest than I'd expected and inspired confidence that I could move a few (lot) more unwanted bits.

Next pile I'd like to shift is the left-overs from the CJ250/360 projects.
Had two 250's and used one as a donor bike to pinch bits off here and there.

What I wasn't sure about is that I'd now like to sell the frame and other parts and have the V5 for this, however I'd probably keep the engine that came with it for future spares etc.
If I do this, what does that mean for the engine 'status' as it would be shown on the V5 being sold with the frame - is that a problem for future use of the engine or is there anything different to do with paperwork to separate the engine from the frame registration.

Hope that makes some kind of sense..
Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Engine numbers
« on: February 15, 2022, 07:28:14 PM »
Just a general question after some idle eBay surfing...
What do people do when buying / selling engines without frames, i.e. with no registration docs.
Is there any way to check as a buyer (or confirm as a seller) if an engine is from a genuine bike being broken rather than possibly being stolen?
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Brake pads
« on: February 02, 2022, 07:29:40 PM »
Hi,
Just looking to order brake pads and wondered what opinions are on varying types available.
I've seen organic, semi-sintered and ceramic available and no idea what pros and cons are.
Are any better / worse for squealing which seems a big issue with these brakes?

SOHC Singles & Twins / Advance unit springs
« on: January 02, 2022, 07:10:05 PM »
Hi,
Spent a happy few hours trying to clean up the advance / retard unit for the CJ360 which was a bit sticky to start with.
All clean and shiny but still doesn't seem to 'snap' back very reassuringly so I think the springs may be knackered.

Does anyone know if you can get replacement springs for these units?

Cheers,
Andy

Other Bikes / Fork seal removal
« on: July 27, 2021, 04:12:49 PM »
Almost got the CJ360 completely stripped down and just wrestling with the final few bits.
Footrests for some reason proved really hard to get apart as the pivot pins just wouldn't shift.
On the CJ there's an insert over the pins and these two bits just wouldn't separate until letting the 10 tonne press loose on them - all now safely apart!

Hopefully the very last battle is getting the old fork oil seals out. Normally quite an easy job on every bike I've worked on but for some reason proving a nightmare so far.
Have soaked in penetrating oil, used heat gun, soaked again, used more aggressive heat but they simply don't want to budge.
Even bought a special fork oil seal removal tool but that is no better and starts to bend before anything moves.
The seals are starting to come apart so where the rubber is coming loose I can see the steel rim around the outer edge in one area so I guess there's a thin bit of rubber between this and the fork leg inner face.
I don't want to ruin the legs if avoidable so would welcome any cunning plans to get the seals out.

Cheers,
Andy

Other Bikes / Axle clamp stud removal
« on: July 06, 2021, 06:40:01 PM »
Evening all,
Spent the last two days stripping and rebuilding the front end on the GSX1100EZ as there was a weep on one of the fork seals.
Heavy bugger to work on but all went surprisingly smoothly until...
Tightening up the axle clamp nuts and one of the threads stripped at the very end where the nut fits.
I'd like to pull out the old stud and fit a new one but never tried this before and wasn't sure how easy stud removal might be.
Seen a few stud removal tools on Amazon so hoping someone may have a recommendation on which type to use.
The full stud is there with just the last bit stripped so have good thread above that - could try screwing on two nuts as a first option.

Any advice very come - really don't want to strip the front end and forks down again so hopefully can do this in situ.

Cheers,
Andy

SOHC Singles & Twins / CJ360T engine advice
« on: June 16, 2021, 02:03:23 PM »
Hi all,
While doing 'final' tinkering with the CJ250T I thought I'd strip the CJ360T to see if she's worth restoring as well (don't ask why, I know they're not exactly in demand!).
Frame and bodywork pretty good generally and mainly original so that's the good news.
The engine is original and doesn't seem to have been messed around with but clock shows quite high mileage at over 53,000 miles.
From strip-down, one piston had a broken ring and obvious damage as well as the head - photo shows this clearly (reminds me of Nurse Julie's engine rebuild and the discussions on cause etc).
[ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The bores are reasonable generally but one side has a rough patch and a scar as photo.
[ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
The rest of the engine seems generally OK but I haven't gone through it in detail yet as I really wanted to see what the verdict was for the top end before going much further.
No proper engineering skill at all so no idea whether the head is salvageable - some of the pits are near the valve seats and edge of the head surface and not sure if this can just be 'smoothed' down.
The bores I'm sure will need a rebore - on standard size and measurements I took quickly suggest the wear is still below the service limit but clearly need attention. The problem here is getting pistons and rings - I've seen 1mm oversize for both available, or just 0.5 / 0.7 rings and odd pistons so may be tricky getting the full set needed. Is it sane to simply go for the 1mm oversize if parts are available rather than try and source the lower oversize?
Would appreciate views on the head and bores and any idea on cost of rebore as I've not yet had to have anything bored so no idea on price.

Cheers,
Andy

SOHC Singles & Twins / Hanging revs
« on: May 22, 2021, 07:18:47 PM »
Hi,
Got the CJ250T back together a while ago but didn't put petrol in a couple of weeks ago when I finally got a chance to play with the engine outside.
Fired up easily but had an obvious leak on the carb manifold rubbers, ran rough and had an oil leak on the clutch side cover.
Back on the ramp.
Ordered new rubbers from Cruzinimage which arrived really quickly and fitted these.
Fixed oil leak (what a pain getting the cover on and off - involves kickstart, brake pedal and exhaust being removed / pulled aside).
Checked points and timing.
Started up much better and idles nicely but revs hang and only drop slowly so need to sort that next.
Cables are free and couldn't find any air leaks on the carb to head or filter rubbers.
I guess this means something inside the carbs needs another clean out but just wondered what else could affect this in peoples experience.
Cheers,
Andy
