CB350/400 / Gaskets and seals
« on: January 24, 2020, 06:28:49 PM »
Hi all,
Having been through most of the 400f engine parts I've pretty much worked out the list of bits needed but have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help with...
Does the NE gasket set which seems to be the widely available one (presume OK?) include the oil control gaskets or do these need to be ordered separately?
Are there any other gaskets not included in the set i should also get separately?
Does the DSS oil seal set include all the seals needed for the engine or are further ones needed?
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Cam chain tensioner bolt
« on: January 12, 2020, 12:00:23 PM »
Hi again,
Another question on the cam chain tensioner bits.
The hole in the crankcase for the bolt to lock the tensioner has been repaired at some time with a M6 thread insert - it seems quite secure and thread is good but I wasn't sure how this should really be.
As I understand it the original bolt has M6 thread at the end and then a bit of M8 with a nut further towards the head.
Should the thread in the cylinder case be all M6 or a bit of both to fix properly.
Hope my rubbish description makes sense..

Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Cam Chain Tensioner bits
« on: January 03, 2020, 05:33:53 PM »
Hi,
Finally getting around to doing some work on the CB400F and have been going through boxes of bits and cleaning parts to start working out what needs replacing etc.
As a first area I've pulled together the cam chain tensioner parts and have a couple of questions - hopefully photos attached show relevant bits.
The horseshoe has been savaged by the cam chain and is stiff to move - is the damage too bad or is it OK to 'tidy' this up so the pivot moves smoothly and re-use?
The two chain guides are still flexible and no sign of cracks etc. - should these be replaced or OK to retain?
Looks like someone got creative with the special bolt and made this one up from a standard bolt so I'll replace this

Trying to keep budget down on this rebuild as the bike is a bit tired and lots of non-standard parts - had a good but hard life by the look of it - hence trying to reuse whatever is reasonable rather than bring back to original glory.

Cheers,
Andy [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ] [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

CB350/400 / What colour
« on: July 26, 2019, 06:26:06 PM »
OK, first question on the 400/4 restoration if anyone can help please.
I'm trying to sort out what colour / scheme the bike should be.
The bike is a 'P' reg August 1975 on the log book and this says colour is red.
Attached photo shows the current tank (no idea how the paint ended up this way!) and looks a bit purplish rather than red on the undamaged areas.
As the bike has had a hard life this may well be non original tank or paint scheme so I wondered if anyone can advise what the correct colour / scheme should be for this year of bike.
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / At last
« on: July 19, 2019, 05:54:36 PM »
Evening all,
Been hovering around the forum for some years, ever since buying a 400/4 basket case along with a CJ360t which have sat sulking in a shed up the garden while I finally caught up with other restorations that I'd had on the go for far too long.
Now cleared the decks and got all the various boxes, bags and rusty piles together to see what state the 400 is in and aim to get underway shortly.
Having bought her in pieces I've no idea what condition the bike was in before the previous owner stripped her down so likely to be some interesting discoveries along the way.
I don't know much about these bikes so no doubt will have a long list of questions as I go - apologies in advance if they've all been asked before and / or the answers are bleeding obvious.
Not sure what level to aim for with the bike - full shiny restoration or clean and fix to a workable standard. May become clearer once I've had a good look at the bits in the pile!
Attached (hopefully) a couple of photos of the little beauty!
Cheers,
Andy

CB500/550 / Setup instructions
« on: April 27, 2019, 09:24:40 AM »
Hi,
Not sure if it's of any interest but I've been going through a pile of manuals etc. I collected over the years and thought I'd see if these scanned easily on the home printer.
Tried it out on a couple for the CB500 / 550 and seems to come out well so thought I'd check if this is any use to anyone in pdf form.
The first is the set-up instructions for CB500 / 550 including pre-delivery service details (19mb) and the other is a short supplement for the CB550F2 1977 (4mb).
As files are quite large not sure if email is workable but guess there are ways and means if anyone wants a copy.
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Engine swap
« on: July 22, 2014, 06:12:56 PM »
Hi,
Been keeping an eye on ebay for a replacement engine for my 1975 400f and wondered what compatibility is with later engines - i.e. There's a 1978 one at the moment but i wasn't sure if this would fit straight in etc.
Advice very welcome please
Cheers

CB350/400 / 400 engine repair or replace
« on: March 14, 2014, 06:42:52 PM »
Hi,
Assessing the engine that came with my latest bargain basket case and would really appreciate advice etc. now it's stripped.
Clocks show 36k miles and bike generally looks to have had a pretty hard life.
Bought it partially stripped but dry stored.
Bores are worn and pistons all had broken top rings so I guess rebore is needed - any idea on cost and where to get it done?
Bottom end seems OK at first look - are there known problems I should look for / things to check?
I guess key question is whether it's sane to refurbish the old engine or look out for a running one instead - any opinion?
Cheers

New Member Introductions / Hello
« on: March 05, 2014, 06:56:03 AM »
Hi all - just joined the forum after searching the web for info on the 400/4.
Bought a basket case - I really should know better but it came with another bike and was of course too good a deal to miss!!
In the process of assessing condition and if / how to go about restoring the poor old girl so will be in need of sound advice (counselling?) and this forum looks like the place to be.
Cheers
Andy
