Misc / Open / Selling frame but keeping engine
« on: April 05, 2022, 08:47:23 AM »
Hi,
Finally getting around to clearing some of the collected projects and parts from the sheds and have even sold for the first time on eBay - a rusty Harris 4-1 for a GS1000 that got more interest than I'd expected and inspired confidence that I could move a few (lot) more unwanted bits.

Next pile I'd like to shift is the left-overs from the CJ250/360 projects.
Had two 250's and used one as a donor bike to pinch bits off here and there.

What I wasn't sure about is that I'd now like to sell the frame and other parts and have the V5 for this, however I'd probably keep the engine that came with it for future spares etc.
If I do this, what does that mean for the engine 'status' as it would be shown on the V5 being sold with the frame - is that a problem for future use of the engine or is there anything different to do with paperwork to separate the engine from the frame registration.

Hope that makes some kind of sense..
Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Parts washer fluid, what does everyone use?
« on: February 16, 2022, 11:07:01 AM »
Agree with heli-madken on the Screwfix stuff - used it for a while now and seems to do a pretty good job and isn't too unpleasant either.
When I bought the cleaner from Machine Mart I also bought their degreaser which was pretty useless, foamed badly and formed a thick smelly layer of scum on the surface so that didn't go too well!

For the ultrasonic, I've bought fluid from a company called Mistral (mistralie.co.uk) - I think when I first looked some years ago it seemed to be the same stuff Allendale were selling.
They also did (maybe still do) a solvent degreaser which was really good and aggressive.

Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Engine numbers
« on: February 16, 2022, 10:59:40 AM »
I guess you're right.
Shame there isn't some online way to check on engine numbers - I did see mention of a few where you can input frame / VIN numbers for vehicles but guess engines aren't as closely logged anywhere.
I've got a few engines I'll probably sell over time and will make sure I keep a copy of the V5 relating to these to pass to any buyer for peace of mind.
Mind you, I've also got a few cases / engines with no idea where I picked them up any more - probably came bundled up with project bikes / basket cases I've bought over the years. Probably over-thinking things and will decide what to do with these when the time comes.

Andy

Just a general question after some idle eBay surfing...
What do people do when buying / selling engines without frames, i.e. with no registration docs.
Is there any way to check as a buyer (or confirm as a seller) if an engine is from a genuine bike being broken rather than possibly being stolen?
Cheers,
Andy

CB350/400 / Brake pads
« on: February 02, 2022, 07:29:40 PM »
Hi,
Just looking to order brake pads and wondered what opinions are on varying types available.
I've seen organic, semi-sintered and ceramic available and no idea what pros and cons are.
Are any better / worse for squealing which seems a big issue with these brakes?

Cheers,
Andy

« on: January 25, 2022, 05:59:08 PM »
Ted,
I've owned it for over 40 years having bought it from my parents old neighbour in my teens.
He'd bought it new in 1955, ridden it daily then dumped it in the garage.
Took a few years to convince him to sell it rather than leave it rusting in peace in his damp garage.
Got it running after a bit of work but then got sidetracked by japanese bikes and the poor blighter hasn't had a lot of attention since the eighties!
Stripped it down again a while ago to assess what needs doing and almost started to restore it but then couldn't decide what route to take.
It's all original and complete with lots of original paint and patina (and quite a bit of wear / rust as well).
There are quite a few shiny examples around and I think maybe it's worth keeping it as original as possible rather than strip, replate, repaint etc. etc.
That's as far as I got before dropping back to playing with the old Honda CJ's but maybe will get on to this one again soon.
Cheers,
Andy

Ted,
I agree it looks like a Bantam.
This is my 1955 D1 Plunger Bantam in pieces - owned it for over 40 years, still hasn't got to the front of the restoration queue!!

SOHC Singles & Twins / Re: Advance unit springs
« on: January 03, 2022, 09:21:39 AM »
Thanks Bryan,
Had a look at the forum and might give it a go cutting the spring back a bit - maybe once engine is back running so I can check the operation properly.
I did find a German company selling springs for the CB350 - 750 online but guess they would be different to the CJ ones.
Also have one last set of points on a spare engine so I'll check those next before getting deeper into modification work.

I wasn't sure how specific the spring rating was to each model or if new ones were available anywhere as I guess it's a common issue with old points ignition.

Andy

SOHC Singles & Twins / Advance unit springs
« on: January 02, 2022, 07:10:05 PM »
Hi,
Spent a happy few hours trying to clean up the advance / retard unit for the CJ360 which was a bit sticky to start with.
All clean and shiny but still doesn't seem to 'snap' back very reassuringly so I think the springs may be knackered.

Does anyone know if you can get replacement springs for these units?

Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Centre Stand seized pin fix?
« on: December 01, 2021, 06:33:40 PM »
Sounds a good result Ash
Spent an hour or two today getting one pin out.
SDS drill didn't do much sadly - except make all the house lights flicker as it battled the rusty pin!
Fed a good sawblade through the pin and cut through on two sides after which the pin came out easily so got there in the end.

Andy

Ash,
Had this problem on the CJ250 but luckily found a NOS stand cheap on eBay to replace it - the new DS pivot pin to go with it is indeed solid.

I now have the same thing on the CJ360 and have tried all sorts of banging and squeezing (10 tonne press) but no sign of movement so far.
Have got a big old SDS impact drill in the garage so I'll give that a go as well.

I also thought about leaving the old pipe in place, cut neatly at each end, then using a bolt as the new spindle and make up a bush (or rather 'have' made up as no lathe / mill or idea how to use one!) at each end to fit in the frame lugs. I thought this might be an easier option and guess the bolt pivot would work OK for the remaining life of the bikes.
Probably a bit of a bodge but I might try it out and luckily I've now got 2 CJ250 cut off stands and the one on the 400 is also seized and has been bodged up in the past so plenty to try out on!
Cheers,
Andy

Misc / Open / Re: Ramp safety front wheel removal advice please ?
« on: November 24, 2021, 02:15:50 PM »
Ted,
The one I've got is the 'Oypla Heavy Duty 500kg Motorcycle Motor Bike Stand Scissor Lift' from Amazon - bought it a couple of years ago for about £40 from memory.
One nice thing with them is that they're not hydraulic so don't start lowering on their own if left for a while!

Cheers,
Andy

I found a small scissor jack really useful for this sort of job.
These have two upstands with rubberised coating that can be adjusted to sit under the frame sections.
This sort of thing...
