Tricks & Tips / Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
« on: September 05, 2022, 06:16:35 PM »
OK Dave panic over as Bryan has a set apart. The lifter ones look the same as the 500/550. I presume there are 4 in each set?

Seems they changed to the integrated brake light switch around 1978. It's under the reservoir.

No note from Roo to say they've arrived. Maybe his postie doesn't like him  :) :)

Misc / Open / Dremel using a pic of a US CB550-4 on their website.

Just spotted this.

Looks like a US model as the side panel badge is different, same as the 500 as it still has a clutch cable fitted to the left side casing, so it could be a 500K2/3. Bit of a rusty bike if I'm honest.

Wonder if it's anyone on here's bike.

We'll see how they come out first Dave. Hopefully they'll be really good, at £90 for the punch I'd hope so.

I'll sell a few sets and recoup the outlay.

What's odd about the link that started this is it suggests 1/4" and 3/8". 1/4" is approx 6mm and 3/8" is approx 9.5mm. Which is odd as the shaft of the lifter arm is 10mm and the hole in the carb body is around 12-13mm. So the felt must have to stretch like hell to fit and most likely it would rip. Is the 400 felt washer the same as the 500/550?

Actually just noticed the felt washers on the link are going onto the choke not the lifter arm as in the 500/550.

Send me measurements of the 400 choke arm please Dave and the carb body recess. Do they not have the felt washers on the lifter arm as well Dave? Been many moons since I refurbed a 400 set of carbs.

The stainless bolt will outlast any chrome bolt. No more little pitting appearing on the top of the bolt. I've gone this way as well, although I did fit a washer under the head to stop it gouging into the chrome of the body, which on closer inspection you have also done, stainless as well?

I have decided that I might as well buy a new punch set, the new one does both cuts at the same time so hopefully the quality will be much better. Also ordered some new felt, 100% wool felt. If the new ones turn out better than my other ones I may make a few sets and sell them. Might even be able to make the ones for the 500 swinging arm.

I'll update when I have all the tools and materials.

Another alternative would be to use a master cylinder off another Honda, like the later GL1000 which has the brake switch on the master cylinder.

I have a very small spanner that came in a tool kit from some bike or other, works a treat.

Just made 3 sets, I use metric hole punches and I find 12mm and 8mm good for this purpose. Unlike the link I find making the small hole first then punching the larger one around it. I tried it the other way and I was forever throwing them away due to one side being so thin it was starting to break up.

Will send you 2 sets Phil. One set for CB-500 as soon as he sends me his address.

The rotating part has a cut out for the bolt for the brake lever to pass through, if it goes through then you're ok.  You've not got the spring on yet which accounts for the odd look of it being too far out from the frame.

Don't forget to REALLY grease that pivot tube.

Make sure the alignment punch marks line up on both the pin and the lever.

I always do the engine last, I did the engine first one time and when I'd done the rest the engine had filled with condensation. The oil was like mayonnaise and it hadn't even turned over by that point. I ended up taking it apart again just to clean the insides.

20 sets ?????? You know where you can go with that request. TBH they ain't hard to make, just fiddly. I'll make a few sets as soon as I get the time.
