Tricks & Tips / Re: HOW TO MAKE FELT CARB WASHERS
« on: September 04, 2022, 01:37:49 PM »
I have the tools and the felt to make these Roo and CB-500. Do you still need some?

I must warn you, they are quite fragile so I tend to soak mine in Silicon oil as that not only helps them keep together but also aids in lubricating the lifter shaft that passes through them.

Looking at the manual it looks like the boss on that gear should face the other way.

I could try cleaning one of the internally damaged covers if you want Mick. See how the surface is on them.

I started (and still have and use) a 370w bench grinder. It was useful to learn the tricks etc but as soon as you're doing a lot of polishing or polishing steel for instance or even large alloy pieces it's limitations soon became apparent. I have it fitted with finishing mops now and use it to clean items of soap as I'm working with the more powerful Sealey.

I'd go 8" if I was you. The bigger the area of the mops the more access to the piece you can gain. The rats tail extensions make polishing FAR FAR easier and changing mops is now very easy.

Proving harder than I thought this Mick.

I found 3 quite easily, one has a part of the oil pump wall broken, clearly a chain breakage, another has a very small section at the top of the oil pump wall missing, that may have been me fitting an oil pressure gauge many moons ago and that's how the pipe went through. The last one looked reasonable, I always clean them and inspect closely as I clean for damage. The alloy has some corrosion pitting and one area has what looks to be a stone strike. I could try and clean all these up to some extent but it would depend on what your were thinking of doing with it, powder coating would cover it pretty well for instance.

If you were thinking of polishing it then there's a lot of work to be done.

I should have at least 2 more around somewhere but I need to ensure that I have a decent one for my engine.

Let me know.

Hold a tool tray for me Roo, I think my BIL needs one for my 500 which he borrowed but has never given back.

Asked for plug spanners on another thread, add a couple of 26mm toolkit spanners as well if you can. The box spanner type.

If you see any plug spanners for the 500 Roo, genuine ones not copies, get me a couple please.

I have one in a small box that been in the shed since 1980 at least. I keep spotting it and opening the box and I remember it vividly. However, as soon as I want the damn box it's gone on walkabout, I remember moving it when I started to empty to shed but buggered if I can figure out where I put it. It will turn up as soon as you've found one.

I'll also have some in a huge box of bits that's in the garage but being such a small part it will be right at the bottom among hundreds of other little pieces. I'll keep looking though.

They'll fit but it's possible the forks may not line up properly.

One giveaway on the countershaft is that it has a small cutout in the end of it, opposite end to where the sprocket goes. Look inside the needle roller and you'll see a small flange that turns the little oil pump, the 500 doesn't have anything in the shaft that can drive that, the 550 has. If you see that you know it's a 550 without checking the number of teeth on the gears.
