Misc / Open / HISTORIC TAX, SORN AND THE MOTOR INSURANCE DATABASE (MID)
« on: September 13, 2018, 04:16:24 PM »
Earlier this year I caught up on some bike admin, we have bikes in storage that are not ridden but needed change of tax class to Historic. No problems with this at all, all very straight forward. Log books changed and returned by DVLA, bikes taxed as you can't change to Historic and re SORN at the same time, all the little leaflets in the envelopes from DVLA state ' A vehicle must be taxed or SORN' so as bikes were all compliant, log books filed away all forgotten about.

Today, I received a letter from the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) / DVLA stating that as there is no record of Insurance on these bikes, I am breaking the Law and if I take no action immediately I will get fined and receive fixed penalty points.

The letter states ' It is a legal requirement for a vehicle to be insured at all times unless it has been declared off the road'

Sooooo, even if the vehicle is Taxed, if it's not insured, it has to be SORN. Therefore I have had to SORN all the bikes in question, even though they are taxed!!!

FFS when are they going to stop making life difficult and stop changing rules without informing us.

I knew about the MID as I used to have to inform The Bureau of every vehicle in and out of the stock book when I had a Trade Insurance policy and that has been going on for about 10 years, it was just a computer exercise, but it never extended to private individuals.

Misc / Open / NEW DECK NEEDED FOR MY HONDA
« on: July 09, 2018, 09:20:41 PM »
Totally off at a tangent here but worth an ask.
The deck on my Honda Izy lawnmower has rotted right through. I repaired it about 4 years ago with fibreglass and its done the job until now but what metal was left has now rotted through completely. Therefore, the deck has basically parted company with the rest of the mower. Very reluctant to just scrap it as the engine is still very good but also reluctant to spend £119 on a new deck. Are any forum members Honda Lawnmower / parts suppliers who could get one for me cheaper please ?. The model number is HRG 415C2 SDE. 16" self propelled petrol.

Misc / Open / 40 year old wiring !!!
« on: May 11, 2018, 03:45:42 PM »
Had a problem with Millie, the CB550 mongrel that Trig has built for me. The bike has got a brand new CB500 single fuse loom fitted but we used the original battery earth cable as it looked in good nick. Whilst doing the electrics on the bike, everything electric worked, including the engine firing. The other day, when Trig pushed the start button, all the idiot lights went out, no firing and after a short while the idiot lights came back on again. Now, as many of you know, wiring is Trigs least favourite subject, so he consulted with Mr Hairy who said it could be a bad earth, all checked, all ok. The only thing Trig could find was the earth to the battery seemed a bit lumpy inside the outer cable. After cutting the outer sleeve off, this is what he found....totally disintegrated copper wire. He made a new earth cable and hey presto, all tickity boo and everything working as it should do. Thanks Hairy, I have emailed you the pics.

Misc / Open / WHAT A LUCKY GIRL.
« on: May 10, 2018, 01:37:33 PM »
I know we are all into our bikes for different reasons but for myself it's all about riding them, always has been, always will be. Today I did another 100 miles on Hettie, the bike is running like a dream. The weather was perfect, the roads quiet and it was nothing more than a nice ride out, stopping of at a well known bike meeting place for a cuppa and having a natter with like minded enthusiastic bike riders. After almost 40 years of bike riding, I can honestly say it is still one of the best ways to spend a couple of hours and all for the price if a splash of fuel and cuppa. I consider myself very lucky to be a bike rider.....long may it last.
