Other Bikes / Strange thing with the battery on the Thundercat
« on: April 11, 2018, 03:50:36 PM »
Hi Chaps
The Thundercat has been in the conservatory for the winter. Today, the alarm went off on the bike as the battery was low. It's a sealed acid battery and when it went on the battery charger the sides of the battery sucked in !!!.Removed the plug strip that says 'Do not remove'  ::) ::) just to be nosey and the sides popped back out a little but not all the way. What's happening??

CB350/400 / WHAT'S THIS BIT FOR?
« on: February 22, 2018, 09:53:56 AM »
Attached to the top frame on the near side of the 400 is a bracket. I know the bit on the right is where the rubber band fits that holds the loom in place but what is the other bit of bracket for?.
The whole bracket is called a Stay, Speed Unit. Should I have something fitted to it?

Humour / The Gynaecologist
« on: January 19, 2018, 04:53:19 PM »
A gynaecologist was getting sick of his job and decided that he needed a career change. He'd always enjoyed tinkering with motorcycle engines so thought he'd become a motorcycle mechanic.

The good doctor went along to the Institute of Motorcycling, the best motorcycle mechanics school in the country, and completed the training class. The final exam was to strip a bike engine completely and reassemble it - obviously back into perfect working order. So our gynecologist friend did the test and anxiously awaited the result.

The day he received the results he got quite a surprise, he got 150%! He quickly phoned the instructor and queried the mark. The instructor said, "No, no that's right. First I gave you 50% for stripping down the engine - a very thorough job. Next I gave you 50% for reassembling it - a fantastic job really. Then I gave you a 50% bonus for doing it all through the muffler".  ;D ;D ;D

Humour / The Sperm Sample
« on: January 03, 2018, 09:30:29 PM »
An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam.  The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow."  The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day.  The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained.  "Well, doc, it's like this--first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing."  The doctor was shocked! "You asked your neighbor?"  The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get the jar open."

CB350/400 / CB400/4 FRONT FORK REFURB BY JULIE
« on: December 15, 2017, 04:29:33 PM »
A slight diversion from the engine building today. On a couple of occasions the front forks have bottomed out and stayed stuck down momentarily. Also the forks seemed to be very hard to me on normal riding. Therefore decided to take them apart and refurb. I know many of you are expert with front forks but this is the first time for me doing this on an old Honda, so I thought I would share.

Here they are out of the bike.

I took the top nut off with the air wrench.

I also used the air wrench to remove the bottom bolt. This is an Allen head bolt, so needed an Allen bit, plus a little extension bar to get in between the studs. Before using the wrench I gave the Allen bit / extension bar a couple of good whacks with the big persuader.
Trig said it is always best to use the air wrench as this can prevent the part that the bolt is attached to inside, the bottom of the under seat pipe, turning with the nut.

The old oil seal stop was then removed

and then the old oil seal.

The fork pipe was pulled out from the bottom case. The fork was then turned upside down to drain all the fork oil. All the internals were then taken out. The spring, the under seat pipe, the oil lock piece and the external drain bolt.
Every part was then cleaned thoroughly in solvent and dried. Including getting a long piece of stiff wire with a rag attached right down to the bottom to make sure all the old crud had been removed.  As Trig was doing some polishing at the time, he polished the bottom cases for me.

LINK TO THE CB400/4 DETONATION THREAD
http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php/topic,14609.msg122071/topicseen.html#new

OK, here goes

A bit of history. 1978 ‘T’ Honda CB400/4 F2.  Name ‘ Hettie’. Owned by myself  for just over 3 years and ridden regularly. Clock shows 46,838 miles, I don’t know if this is genuine mileage or not. It looks like the engine has been apart before sometime in its life. I have done about 4,400 miles on her since purchase. She has been regularly serviced at about 1000 mile intervals. She had a leaky oil pump which was due to brittle ‘O’ rings, so new rubber parts fitted. Sump gasket changed twice as I originally thought it was the gasket leaking. Had a problem with rising revs when the engine was hot which has been resolved by fitting non resisted spark plugs in place of the resisted plugs Dave Silver says are correct for this bike.

Last year she had a rattle develop somewhere in the engine, to me it sounded at the top end possibly on the left side. The rattle only lasted a few miles and then disappeared and did not return all last year. This year, half way through this summer, the rattle returned, intermittently, both under load and de accelerating. The rattle stopped if I kept her under about 5,000 rpm but still very intermittent as she would go for weeks without any undue noises. As I have plenty of other bikes to ride I took her off the road at this point.

She has always burnt a bit of oil and smokes a small amount under load but no more than any other old bike and I have oil vapour blowing back into the air box.
Everything else on the engine sounds fine, no knocking noises or clunking and the clutch and gearbox are great. She starts first time, every time. I do not pussy foot around on this bike. I ride her quite hard and she performs really well for a CB400/4.

So, now to the plan.

Engine out, strip and assess and rebuild replacing any parts that need to be and having any machine work done that is necessary. Engine casings will go for acid stripping and then she will be prepared and repainted using Triggers tried and tested methods.
At the same time, I will be having the clocks refurbished with new clock faces and I need to drop the forks out and give them a good looking at as they bottom out and get ‘stuck’ sometimes.
I am aiming to do the strip, assessment and rebuild of the engine myself and Trigger will do any machine work that is needed but, I would like to do as much of it as I possibly can.

Hettie is now on the ramp and I will start unbolting the exhaust, carbs and ancillaries tomorrow. I plan to remove the top end whilst the engine is still in the frame and then lift the engine out. I will post updates and pictures as I progress. I will not be offended if no one comments throughout the process as I know for many of you, engine strip and rebuilds are old hat but, for me it’s the first time for doing a 4 cylinder engine. I have taken the top ends off my old Brit bikes in the past but that is the extent of my engine experience.

Announcements / Rob.b - Rob Birkett. RIP
« on: September 21, 2017, 09:07:05 AM »
Sad news. Forum member Rob.b (Rob Birkett) had died, he was 61
Rob went to the doctors at the end of March with back ache. After some tests he was diagnosed with terminal Spinal cancer with secondary cancer of the lungs. He was given 3-6 months to live.
He married his partner, Sara, whilst in hospital a couple of months ago.
We got to know Rob as late last year he got Graham to do an overhaul on his CB500 K1 engine. He was the funniest and nicest man you could ever meet and he was a true biker, loved riding and was gradually riding around the coastline of the UK. He retired a few years ago, so had plenty of time for getting out and about.
I last spoke to Rob about 3 weeks ago and he was still optimistic of getting out on his bike again but, it never happened.
The funeral is on 22nd September in Chester and I will send a condolence card, from the Forum, to Sara.

CB500/550 / Which wires do I connect?
« on: August 10, 2017, 09:09:53 PM »
Hi Chaps
On my custom build, I'm not planning to have an ignition switch. I need to bypass the switch (on a CB500 wiring loom). Once I have taken the ignition switch away, what wires do I connect to have a constant ignition?. I do not need anything to do with the parking light. I'm not understanding TL1 and TL2 on this diagram. So, what wires do I need to put together to get a constant ignition?

Hi Chaps.
I need to make up battery leads for my CB550 custom project. I'm looking in the Vehicle Wiring Products catalogue and I'm not sure what amp cable I need and I'm not sure, for example, what 25mm2 means. I can understand the OD measurement of the cable.
I have also been looking at the battery / starter ring terminals but also again, I'm not sure what I need. Can anyone advise me please.
Ta in advance

CB500/550 / TAIL / STOP LIGHT - ADVICE PLEASE
« on: July 15, 2017, 11:21:14 PM »
Hi Chaps
I have a question. On my CB550 project, I fancy just a very small tail/ brake light. The only ones I have found that I like are LED. Can I just plug an LED lighting unit on to the existing standard wiring set up or do I need to change or add something else magical to make these lights work?
Ta in advance
Julie
