Went to get a ticket on the VFR today and the tech who did it was 21 and the owner of this little beauty. He passed his test in it and parked it for three years to get some dosh together.
He reckoned he’s spent £30k on it but it is quite frankly one of the best ones I’ve seen.
One for you Ted.

I love the Minilite wheels even if they are replicas also the Webber ? carbs - my 'S' had a Madadash with equal sized Audi sourced rev counter to match the 120 mph 'S' Speedo.
While I am at it, I had fly off handrake, works negative camber front lower suspension arms with competetion displacers plus a Koni front damper kit, rear suspension was 1/4 deg toe out plus negative camber at the rear, engine was only 1340 cc standard EN40B crank with twin 1.5" Strombergs with inlet Trumpets. Hepolite Racing pistons, 731 Camshaft, Mangoletsi exhuast with
Y piece, straight through silencer. Wheels were in the first instance Dunlop Alloys shod with Michelin XAS tyres wheels later changed to Wolfrace Rims - seats were a copy Recaro style with extended brackets. Also 13 row oil cooler plus the right hand tank of course held 11 galls in total, I also fitted the larger Vauxhall Cresta Brake Servo.
That was my favourite Cooper S DJC323E written of within weeks when I sold it to a lad in Sheffield - happy days - for all that tuning a modern family car has better performance but it was in 1970.

When I was a young electronics engineer in Bracknell (1980s), my boss had a 1275GT with all sorts of “Stage” stuff.
It was like a go-cart but good for surprising the (then) go-faster foreign cars (whilst looking up at their door mirrors as you zoomed away).

That's a lovely car, all credit to builder/restorer. Mini's have become as expensive as Fast Ford's these days.
I never owned a mini but my brother (who is 6’4”) bought a brand new Mini Racing in the 80’s. I drove it a couple of times and it was great fun, just like a Go-Kart. I'd love to have one but they are out of my league now :(

A very tidy mini there.
Always thought a Kawasaki Z 1300 six would make a really good power unit in one of these.
A differential designed to mount on original output shaft and you'd have a compact installation, six cylinder twin cam, sequential gearboxed mini special ;D
The sound would certainly confuse casual observers, 130 bhp too :)

It must be the weather,? I bobbed over from Radstock’s MOT gaff to Fowlups in Brizzle to collect some exhaust studs I’d ordered and there was a chap there in an Ariel Atom looking thing that was all matt black and ‘quite naughty’ looking.
It had twin Hiyabusa motors in a V configuration in the back. Sounded ace but my phone had gone flat and couldn’t take any piccies. Paddle shift, big dash all full of digital this n that, looked proper factory too. Bet it went well

One of the mechanics where I worked fitted an 1600cc Astra engine into his old mini - a tunning firm sold a complete front subframe conversion kit that enabled the upgrade. Only extra machining needed was to have the Astra drive shafts shortened.
Can't remember what wheels he was able to fit at the front.
After about a year of ownership he sold it on e bay. It was written off by the new owner on his journey home.

Ooh, the nostalgia of Minis. I remember you were either a Ford man or Mini man back in my youth. I had many s's and even scrapped a 1071s - oh the sacrilege!
Look up a mate of min on Google - 'Harvey Death Mini' that is some beast - not Harvey, the Mini ;)

Amazing how did you think of a Reliant tail gate - looks better than the standard pair of doors plus they will not rust.
Looks neat Ian - did you do the work to make the tailgate fit -respect?
Stallard badge on the boot - a new name to me. Back in 1968 there was a bloke in Derby had a white Ogle Mini at the time it looked stylish - like this one.

I modified the Reliant door myself - it had the wrong curve, was too tall and not wide enough - so a really simple job 8)
The Stallard badge - that's me! You were not allowed to use the Austin or Morris names on a self build. Even the tax disc has the name. There was another based on a 1300GT (1100 shape) which I built for my girlfriend back then and the local licensing office gave me GAT 404L to go with the Mini number - how times have changed, it would now have a Q plate! Unfortunately that car was written off in a rear end shunt a few years after we sold it.

Thanks for posting the link Ian - reading your rebuild of the Mini Estate was really interesting as was your article on the 1300GT.
FWIW the 1300 GT & its MG & Wolseley variants reminded me how underestimated they were as comfy vehicles. The engine as you will know is almost an S engine (has the extra 2 head studs) but without the expensive EN40B crank without the two rear crank case covers so a more rigid block. When I was in the car trade they sold well as used vehicles if they were not too rotten at the rear.
Me and my best mate at the time re-shelled quite a few minis and found out to our cost how some things just do not fit, different spaced wiper spindle centrers, two thread sizes on the rubber suspension doughnuts, bigger rear windscreen. We had a new Hydralastic rear subframe that we fitted with the dry rubber suspension - it was a nightmare as the rear trumpets were too short to give the right ride height. With no access to an engineering option we ended up fitting Hi-Lo adjusters with extra thick spacers at great extra expense.
As much as I loved my Minis back in the day when I bought a used early version BMW Mini it did in my view manage to retain the Mini Go Cart drive with modern ride, comfort and lower cabin noise. What the original Mini really lacked IMHO was separate engine/gearbox oil systems. That said the original minis were a hoot to drive compared to the competition at the time a four wheeled equivalent to Honda 400 fours.
Fond memories of my first 850 with the floor mounted starter button & dip switch plus the long pudding stick gear lever with no synchromesh in first gear.

Yes Ted, it's quite amazing what small changes were made during the Mini production run. My front subframe came from a brand new automatic Mini which had been partly drowned in the North Sea when a ship carrying brand new cars to Belgium sank. Universal Salvage in Sheffield bought them all after recovery - lots of really good undamaged parts became available! However, the Auto front subframe is slightly wider across the engine mounts so I have 1/4" Dural spacers to make up the difference. I've owned 32 Minis of all variants except Moke and Innocenti and rebuilt 12 with new shells starting at £650 and rising to about £1800. I helped a friend re-shell his van in 1972 and that new shell was £178 - they are over 10 grand now for a saloon shell.

I only had three myself an early 850, a 1275 Mk 1 S, then a Mk2 998 Cooper that I upgraded to a full 1275 spec over several years a couple were spent stood on my driveway as a bare shell sitting on four oil drums. Sadly most of those photos were lost in our house fire in November 2017.
My Mum had a couple of manual versions followed by 3 autos the last two were Clubman Estates.
It was my best mate that rallied a 1275 that he kept on crashing so I helped him re-shell the last one three times.
Its a small world when I was a student I worked part time for a Vauxhall dealership that supplied a new 1275 S to an existing Vauxhall customers son. I picked it up on trade plates from Kennings driving it to the Vauxhall Dealership in Derby (Allsops) for delivery - a lad called Neil Wheal who my mate bought it from some 5 years later - what a small world. My BiL was Neils best mate when they both worked for Web Corbett Glass factory in Tutbury.

For the purists you will notice the 850 Mini & blue S had a pair of Lotus Elan side lights as my Parabolic Carello Pajod headlamps had no side light facility - best headlamps I ever owned - they moved to each Mini eventually I fitted them to a Opel Ascona using Hillman Imp headlamp bowls - by that time standard headlamp sizes were history.

Wow, great photo :D. And who can forget the JPS Rotary Nortons, still the best ever looking fag coloured race bike in my opinion, very mean looking especially with the riders wearing matching black leathers. Even the 50cc Puch Monza Grand Prix looked like a JPS Rotary Norton 20 years before they were invented!

Never really been into cars but agree the mini has enduring charm - bizarre how small they look nowadays.
Seeing this thread reminded me of something we came across clearing stuff when my father passed away - a pile of posters of the ERA Mini Turbo - never heard of it but nice photos.

Andy, Someone in my street had the Rover 25 version of the ERA. Nice looking car in BRG with some tasteful orange trim pieces. It's long gone now though!

Could the 200 version down your street have been a 200 BRM? - I think they were all painted BRG? That is a real rare beast these days and quite valuable. I thought ERA only did a Mini version.

That’s the kitty, I had one of those as a company car whilst working for Scott Leathers back on the day for a while, never ran right and I couldn’t t wait to get rid of it. Handled like a jellyfish on roller skates, and had more squeaks and rattles than a tram on Blackpool sea front.
It was swapped for a white diesel version which was DOG slow but had a louder stereo so couldn’t hear the squeaks. Looked like a police car, just without the performance
Never driven a rover since, always had company bikes after that
