Title: mystery front wheel
Post by: bigmockuk on June 21, 2015, 12:15:33 AM
Hi, anyone any idea what this twin disc front wheel could be from? its a close match to a 400n except it has less (and larger) spacings around the centre of the disc than the 400.it is 19" front 18" rear with drum.if i know what it is i can renew the fork seals and the rear shoes which lost its linings to corrosion thanks

From memory caliper, disk and wheel look the same as cb400a, but it was single disk and different mudguard.

The 400N has twin discs but they're smaller than that.  Could be a CB900

I just looked at the pics of my Jan 81 CX500A and it looks a dead ringer for your pic. First CX's had a black piece where the comstar spoke joined on the rim, CX 500B had reverse comstars.  Some CX pics show single disc but mine, which I bought new had twin discs, just like your pic.

Hmm, but what sprocket carrier would be used with a CX rear wheel, the CX was shaft drive. Could be CB650z

@Hairygit ye i remember the cx with the shaft drive i`ll try googling some of your idea`s,it looks like both wheels came from the same bike and probably forks too.i like the look of these comstars/twin discs their clean and tidy and should look good when its all back together with the black/chrome/alloy engine plus i like the extra braking power of the twin.i`ll take some pics of the back wheel today see if it helps, cheers guys

took this pic of the rear wheel drum side and sprocket side, inner drum is marked 118mm,would that coincide with shoe size for the cb550? 118mm internally expanding?

I have 2 sets of cb650 wheels somewhere, I shall try to photograph or measure them if I get the chance. I have a leaky oil cooler on a hydaulic power pack to sort first through as well as childminding duties.

Though the thought occors that in the case of my cb comstars that my fronts could be a mix of cb250, 400twin and cb650 bits so that wouldn't help much in identifying the mystery front. Rear does look just like  my 650 rears though.

oddjob thanks for looking into that! im trying to go thru google pics for every bike to determine what they are and the 900 is very close too.i`ll check out the 650z shortly cheers.both wheels look like they are a match off a same bike, the previous owner must have wanted a heavier front end with twin discs to hold the weight of the full fairing.wonder if he reduced the size of the back sprocket to give more top speed rather than acceleration for touring? just a thought, thanks guys
