Misc / Open / Car insurance for older vehicles.
« on: Today at 01:27:26 PM »
My renewal quote from Direct line has arriived today for our 1997 Merc SL500.

Price has increased from £305.16 fully comp in 2023 to  £406.49 on restricted mileage of 2k a year. All the excess have increased as well. Cover is Market Value of the vehicle & includes Green Flag break down, glass cover with an excess of £125, accident excess £500. Full NCB but not protected.

There were 9 pages in red ink of excusions & policy chanhes including Government Action, War or usurped power etc.

Anyone here who can recomend a Broker or Company for older vehicles that are not really classics, I seem to be paying more for less cover?

Some members here will already be aware that our Grandsons Morgan & James were born following complications with something called TTTTS resulting in both twins having serious birth defects.

Sadly Morgan died on the 24th February 2024 aged 19 years having been born a quadreplegic with all the complication that resulted from his birth - yesterday at Northgate Church in Chester was the Celebration of Life Service attended by his Paediatrician who also gave a short Eulogy as did others who knew the family.

As you can imagine it was an emotional day lifted by photos and accounts by his parents Sharon & Rob of how even with his level of disability he could still express joy with fits of giggles, a raised eyebrow and a huge smile.

Wendy and I came away emotionally drained from the service  with a better understanding of how parents like Sharon and Rob are rewarded by the small signs of appreciation shown by Morgan whose life was so different from the norm.
I came away with a new understanding of the quality of life being different but no less meaningful for parents of severely disabled children and the relationships between siblings.

Morgans surviving twin James has different challenges following severe developmental issues from brain damage leaving him stuck in terms of mental developmeny firmly in the 4-5 years of age zone. James always had a strong bond with his twin brother verging on obsessional to a casual observer. There will be new challenges ahead for Sharon & Rob as James comes to terms with his new situation.

With our wide membership base there are members here who can empathise with the events of yesterday - when James first saw my 400 he was suitably impressed by the bike. Life goes on  - I look forward to him seeing my 500 in the future.

CB500/550 / 500 Speedometer Cable Lubricant question?
« on: April 11, 2024, 01:32:37 PM »
On my 400 it was a new speedometer cable so fitted it as it came - I've pulled out the inner cable on my 500 as it looks a bit mucky . I wiped it down with some WD40 type spray it appears to be a relatively new cable judging by the outer cable condition.

Probably an aftermarket cable as the end where it fits the wheel drive unit is plastic.

What is the best lubricant to use as I suspect grease will be far too thick?
I do not want to risk anything reaching into my restored clocks either.

This looks a half decent starting point as long as the winning price is not too steep.

CB500/550 / Removing excess powder coating from Brake Hub
« on: March 16, 2024, 03:47:36 PM »
After doing a few household chores today I had half an hour to spare to look at building up the brake back plate with the brake shoes.
When I fitted the brake shoes there was no room for a washer between the shoes & the split pin - the original twin link item was missing so individual washers were used instead.

The powder coating appears to have raised the brake shoes both at the lever end and the pivot pins. As a result the brake shoes do not sit where they were before.

I do not have a Dremel tool so what is the easiest/best  way to remove the powder coating in the three affected areas. i.e. the brake shoe pins and the bottom lever actuator boss.

Is a Stanley knife blade likely to work (feels a tad dangerous) or do I use a small plastic cutting wheel in my electric drill?

CB350/400 / 400 Keyster Brassware.
« on: March 10, 2024, 11:55:13 AM »
When I bought my 400 it came with quite a few new parts still in original packaging mostly purchased ten or twelve years earlier by the PO.
The Keyster Carb Kits receive generally  poor reviews on this site
My 400 came with a full set of Keyster Kits that were still boxed.

At the time I was pretty much unaware that Keyster parts were considered poor quality. My 400 runs fine on the Keyster parts so thought I would ask if others found them okay. I am aware of  members who have found them a problem.

Has the quality dropped in a decade or is it a quality control issue?

Misc / Open / I haven't any of this in my Garage 0W/20 Sythetic Oil.
« on: March 09, 2024, 02:02:26 PM »
After over a year of thinking about changing our Jeep GC I finally part exchanged her for a Euro 6 compliant Petrol mild hybrid vehicle.

Whilst reading the handbook I was stunned to find the engine oil is 0W/20 Castrol Edge - that must pour like water out of the countainer!

Misc / Open / Oddjob his defence & mitigation
« on: March 05, 2024, 10:52:31 PM »
This evening I spoke to Ken for the first time in my life.
He rang me to tell me his side of the events that led up to his suspension.
Our conversation began by him  telling me how sad he and his wife were to hear about the death of our Grandson Morgan aged 19 years on the 24th February 2024. Morgan was born quadraplegic following complications caused by by a condition called T.T.T.T.S. that can occur in identical twins. He is survived by his twin brother James who has his own compex health issues caused by T.T.T.T.S.

After a lengthy discussion about other personal issues that we are dealing with we moved onto matters to do with his suspension from the Forum. I should add that we talked for almost an hour.

During that time I formed the view that he was being open and honest about what he told me. I have to say he struck me as a nicer bloke than the online persona I had visualised.

I certainly believe he had no idea that deleting his old post that he views as his intellectual property would cause Steve  "Spamgate".

If I was a Jury member I would find Ken not guilty of any intentional wrong doing in respect to "Spamgate" I understand that Ken has not been given any notice by Steve that he was being effectively banned plus Kens attempt to speak to Steve directly has been either ignored or missed calls have stayed missed.

Sadly I think Ken has decided the Coven have won as he has no route to appeal. He now has no intention to ever return.

Misc / Open / Freeview loss of music channels
« on: March 03, 2024, 10:41:43 PM »
I live in a poor signal area where our nearest Transmitter - Nottingham can't be received, we have to settle for the Sutton Coldfield Transmitter  & West Midlands News so no local Derby News.

This is not a biggie as we could use our Freesat Box for East Midlands News - we have now lost lost our Satelite Signal as the old Sky dish must be 20 years old.

To make it all worse we seem to have lost a few Freeview channels such as Thats 60s & Thats 90s music. Visually the Aerial on the roof looks okay - new Ariel & signal booster was fitted in 2018 after our fire.

What is the most likely cause of the Freeview loss of signal?

Other Bikes / How do I value a Maicoletta Scooter?
« on: February 10, 2024, 11:04:02 PM »
A bike has come up for sale a restored Maico but how on  earth do I work out it's  actual value when there are so few on the market?
It's up for offers over £4,000 looks very tidy in the photo - that said it's not popular on the used market like the 400 for example. Fewer nostalgic owners too as there were not many in the UK.
