Tricks & Tips / Bike trolleys/dollys
« on: November 05, 2023, 11:19:41 AM »
My garage is pretty cramped right now with 4 bikes in it.
Two are next to the door so easily extricated.
The T160 is on a ramp to work on with the 400 next to it which blocks access to shelving.
To ease the 400 movement I'm thinking of getting a trolley of some sort.

What are peoples thoughts and experiences of wheeled devices to move bikes around in confined spaces?

Thanks

Tim

CB350/400 / Front end renovation
« on: July 10, 2023, 06:52:38 PM »
How do you remove the fork slider oil seal?
I don't have part 51412-369-000 "Front shock absorber rebound spring" in my forks.
How bad is this?

Many thanks

CB350/400 / Brake master cylinder hell/joy.
« on: July 05, 2023, 02:16:56 PM »
I'm refurbing the front brake.
New pads.
New oring in calliper, piston cleaned etc
New hoses.

Then the new master cylinder kit.

I read up how people have attempted this in the past which helped loads - thanks all.

The one thing in particular that I found really difficult was getting the circlip out of the groove.
I bought some long nosed circlip pliers and filed noses down to help get in there.
This helped but, best of all was getting the piston fully depressed which makes access to the circlip much easier.
Here's my Heath Robinson way of doing it.
Bung in brake lever pivot bolt into master cylinder body.
Mount in vice
Use screwdriver to lever piston all the way to bottom and secure screwdriver handle with can/small acroprop etc.
Now you can get at the circlip.
Hope that helps

CB350/400 / Front mudguard
« on: June 25, 2023, 11:14:09 AM »
Hi all,

my front mudguard and brackets is bubbling through with rust and at some point will need replacing.
What's the best source of a new part or anyone got one lying around they don't want? Unlikely I'm sure!

Thanks

CB350/400 / Indicator bulb holders
« on: June 19, 2023, 09:08:15 PM »
I've got an intermittent rear indicator so thought I'd have a furgle this evening only to find the front right not working either.
On dismantling the sprung loaded "button" that pushes onto the bulb has fractured from the rest of the brass crimp on the end of the wire.
Anyone know of any sources for bulb holders rather than buy the whole bliddy indicator?
Many thanks

CB350/400 / Gear change mechanism
« on: April 22, 2023, 12:45:29 PM »
I tried to adjust my gear change rod but as it was rusted solid and sheared.
I've got hold of another complete arm, rod and pedal.
However my arm and pedal are in better condition so I'd like to remove the rod and ball joints and fit to my components.

So how do they come apart? Do the ball joints just screw into the arm and foot pedal?

Many thanks

CB350/400 / Spark timing advance unit
« on: February 17, 2023, 06:51:59 PM »
Hi all
I've inspected the spark advance unit and noticed that the springs have seen better days.
Obviously this will affect the advance in some way, so the question is can they be replaced and if so where from?

Second question is the plugs are very sooty.
Should I be adjusting the air screw, they are set to 1.5 turns.
Which way to lean the mixture or should I be looking elsewhere?

Many thanks in advance and sorry for the constant stream of questions right now!
The help is much appreciated

CB350/400 / Electronic ignition
« on: February 15, 2023, 05:11:18 PM »
I saw a thread that contained the fitting information about EI but I can't for the life of me find it.
I'm looking for the instructions for my EI as I'm going to service the advance unit and want to be able to check my timing at the same time.
Many thanks in advance. No pun intended!

CB350/400 / Throttle cable stiffness
« on: February 11, 2023, 01:34:32 PM »
And onto another issue.

My throttle is stiff to turn and returns to closed very slowly.

I think its due to the angle the pull cable makes with the throttle "butterfly" if thats the right word.

I've attached a picture so you can see.

How can I improve the situation please?

Cheers

CB350/400 / Fitting a new wiring loom
« on: February 03, 2023, 07:35:29 PM »
Hi,
The wiring on my bike is pretty horrible.
Apart from the correct connectors the PO has used chocolate block connectors, blue scotchlock connectors and some very non Honda bullets.
There are extra bits here and there, so having thought about it I have taken the plunge and bought a new loom from DSS.

So the first question is...
PO has replaced the rectifier at some stage and it doesn't have the same cable colours as the original.
Also he's cut off the 6 way connector off the loom and added some non stand bullets to connect loom to rectifier.

The new loom comes with a (5 populated) 6way connector. Green Yellow Yellow Yellow and Red (wiring diagram says red/white but whatever)

I can't find a source of the correct opposite (male) connector, but the bike came with some boxes of bits and guess what I found, yes indeed, a compatible 6 way male connector.
I've just ordered some 6.3mm male spades so all should be good.

Still awake?
The rectifier wiring colours are Black White White White Red.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter which Yellow on the loom goes to which White on the rectifier but could someone confirm please?

Many thanks for your expertise and perseverance!

Apologies for the ridiculously long winded question!

CB350/400 / Carb rebuild
« on: December 08, 2022, 02:09:54 PM »
Hi, having finally passed my Mod 2 I've taken my 75 400/4 out for a ride.
Initial problem was petrol coming from overflow pipes which stopped after being left overnight (pet cock off obvs).
Once hot, it died a couple times at junctions and was "jerky" at low revs.
I think sitting for a couple months hasn't done the carbs any good so intend to do a strip and rebuild.
So where's best to get carb rebuild kits? DSS, Wemoto or elsewhere?
What's Nurse Julie's eBay shop called?

On closer inspection of the carb float bowls are held on with self tappers. Joy.
I have read that folk use helicoils to fix, but was wondering if anyone had used Time Serts from Wurth and if so how did it go.
I've watched  a few videos rebuilding and read several threads on here but will no doubt come back with lots of questions.
Many thanks in advance.
Best
Tim

New Member Introductions / Hi from North Wilts
« on: April 01, 2022, 11:45:28 AM »
Hi and thanks for letting me join the forum.
It looks like a great place to learn and get help from what I have already seen whilst browsing over the last week or so.

I'm a proud new owner of a 1975 400/4 which runs, but is a bit tatty so I will be sprucing it up over time.
The previous owner had it from 2009 and I was told doted on it but has sadly passed away.
It came with a spare engine, a 1.5 Motad exhaust systems which are still in their packaging and a couple of crates of old bits n bobs. So whilst it has a high mileage of 50k Think I got a good deal, well we all hope that don't we?

So first question. If I change the current short megaphone silencer for the DS pattern part will I have to change the carb settings?
