Misc / Open / Re: Security Lights
« on: March 06, 2024, 12:59:16 PM »
Despite the advice to go mains power I decided to try solar power. Getting a mains power supply to 2 separate walls would have worked out more expensive. I don't mess about with mains power myself anymore, getting too old.

After reading lots of reviews, not all genuine, I'm sure, I actually went to a real shop and looked at real lights in the flesh! That was a novel experience, I haven't been doing that much for quite a while.

I bought lights from Wickes, Saxby dual LED lamps with a separate solar panel that can be positioned up to 5m away from the light if necessary. They are 1400 lumens which is plenty bright enough, and even a dull, cloudy day in February provides plenty of battery charge. They seem good quality and are performing well so far. 👍

Mick, if that doesn't do the trick do you have any electrical wizard mates nearby who can help?

Check the rectifier/regulator.

If you don't want to fit the plastic replacements there are quite a few aftermarket stubby LED type indicators on eBay including some that look as if they will fix  to rear plates or mudguards.

Presumably I'm going to need resistors for every light with the original electrics unless I do dig deep and get an m.unit, very tempting having spoken to Roo about his

You only need resistors for LED indicators if you use the original type indicator relay. You can fit LED indicator bulbs and a replacement relay which works with LED. All other bulbs on the bike can just be replaced with LED bulbs.

'Can the Valve cover be removed in frame on the CB400f?'
Yes, it can.

The head & block can also be removed with the engine in the frame - you just have to ensure the camchain does not fall inside.

Thank you Ted!

The bike pulls strong , doesn't smoke and has good compression. so i wont be messing with the internals.

I Plan on pulling the cover to detail it, while i am at it clean up the carbs and clean up the fins on the head and Jug.

Just make sure that you slacken off all the tappets/rockers before you loosen the cover screws.

lazarus is now legal, the post office sorted out the historic status no problem so all taxed and ready. I did take a mot exemption form and she did ask to see it but all sorted in 5 mins. if it stays dry over weekend i will have a little ride to see how it goes, wish me luck!

Good news. 👍

« on: February 29, 2024, 03:54:55 PM »
I was having a clean out in the garage over the weekend and realized that i still have the original exhaust system...but as with all of them the bottom of the tail pipe has rusted away...the headers while a little corroded are fine - if i got them rechromed theyd be like new. For the tailpipe i wondered if it was worth taking it to an exhaust builder to refurb it...or is it not worth it...purely just to restore it for the sake of it...? (ive got a stainless motad system on mine which will stay on there)

Thoughts..?

If the silencer has rotted on the bottom you can bet that all the internals are rotten too and past saving. ☹

I know it's too late now but, since you had the engine apart,  you could have fitted a complete cam chain that wouldn't have needed riveting.  You only need to rivet the camchain if you're not splitting the cases. 🤔

Maybe Honda can see a marketing opportunity here and follow in Suzuki's steps with a heritage spares scheme?
Great idea Dave! And sell the parts at a reasonable cost to us loyal Honda guys.😜

Amen to that! 👍

I'm surprised that with all the tooling and effort required that they are only making 300 sets.
That seems very cautious, I'm sure that worldwide demand will be for many more than that, even at the price they are asking!

If you look for Nurse Julie's engine rebuild, (link is on any of her posts) you'll see what is involved.

On a worn engine you may need new pistons and rings, valve guides, new bearings and seals, check camshaft tensioner horseshoe and guides, new camchain, primary chain and damper rubbers, check big end and main bearing shells plus a full gasket set.
A full rebuild is not cheap!

Stigs Fasteners does bike sets for many models Inc 400f. Stainless Allen heads.
I got mine from him, good service and good prices.

These days most manufacturers operate a 'just in time' parts system which relies on an efficient, reliable delivery.
They don't keep large stocks of spares in warehouses anymore, which is bad news for the future long term  maintenance of vehicles.
It's also bad news if your parts are stuck on a cargo vessel jammed across the Suez canal! Or delayed by Houthi rebels trying to sink your ship. 🚢

I guess discoveries of boxes of surplus old parts will be a thing of the past. ☹

My shaving brush is made with badger hair, maybe I should try using a CB550 liner for a closer shave :-)

They use a badger's pubes for shaving brushes! 🤣

Probably...

Could they be from a faulty batch so were made unusable?
