Well Gareth, only time will tell but as I was 70 last year, it might be down to someone else to discover the error of my ways!
By coincidence, I see by your sig that you have a Street Triple and I’ve just finished making the triangular Dural plates and spacers for my mate’s Triple, so that he can fit the rear shocker from a CBR600 - apparently resolves the ‘bounciness’ at the rear end.
Ian

Went to the V&A in Dundee recently - quite good but seems like an expensive cafe with a few exhibits on show, or was I expecting too much?
I've never suffered from any bounciness from my rear end, thankyou very much! 😂
Mine is the old R model with fully adjustable suspension, on standard settings it's just fine, even on a track day. I probably don't ride it hard enough to find the limits.

You are dead right about the V&A, it's like a half empty hangar. Great views down the River Tay, but only if you're in the pricey restaurant. They will be doing an exhibition on car design in the future, I'll try and encourage them to do one on motorcycle design! 🚴🔧

This tractor, if you can call it that, seeing it is basically just the engine and gear box, will be refurbished and it is off to sit in a glass box in a main dealers  :o

What does the complete thing look like?

Yes, must be down to the bean counters - just wondered if there had been a problem with the bronze bush in service but my 350 never makes any untoward noises when the clutch is operated, which is the only time the basket spins on the shaft.  Think I’ll use the 350 version as it really does look like new and even the gear-hobbing marks are still evident.  Living here in Orkney I’m not going to be thrashing it up and down the M1 anytime soon.

Ian
Good decision. 👍

I'm assuming from your original description that it doesn't do it in neutral?

I didn't click it into neutral while still moving so I don't know. Can't check it now because it's in pieces.
I've double checked the chain and sprockets, nothing touching or clicking, no sign of any contact anywhere. There seems to be a lot of in and out movement of the gear change shaft, a lot more than on a spare engine I have. 😯
If there was a worn primary chain then I would get the clunking in 2nd or 3rd gear when slowing down, wouldn't I?
Either way, it looks like engine out to investigate. 😣

I'll check around everywhere for the above issues. It's a fairly new chain and sprockets which have only done about 400 miles, but you never know.

CB350/400 / Gearbox problem
« on: January 27, 2020, 10:21:04 AM »
Looking for advice on a gearbox problem I have with my 400f.
When rolling to a halt in first gear with the clutch pulled in there is a clunking sound  which appears to come from the clutch / gearbox area. It feels as if a gear or shaft is jumping out of line. It doesn't happen in any other gear and gears change up and down without any problem.
I've drained the oil and checked filters, there are no metal particles or evidence of damage. I removed and inspected the clutch and it all checks out within spec.

Is there a common problem with gearbox wear? I guess I'm going to have to split the cases to find the problem.  :(

If you are looking to spend that kind of £ and you want a original bike. There is a forum member putting a very rare UK 500K0 back together that has a original new seat, exhausts, paint etc,etc and it will be a top bike if woodside finishes by the spring  ;)

I will keep myself posted on how this develops. Thanks.

Hi Speedbrace, I wondered from your avatar if you worked at Boscombe Down, or are you a TSR2 fan?

Ok had ride in the freezing cold with the ally points cover on but with insulation tape on the inside, managed 16 miles running Ok.  Should have done some more miles but it was cold !!  ::) so it may not have got "hot" enough to be proper test.

So its appears for some reason when warm/hot the points sort out against the cover ?? this seems odd to me.

However one bit of logic is that points for 2/3  cylinder are closer to the cover than 1/4 and that's the one that fails.

So I've  learn't something new .......or the garage fairies are having a laugh.  ;D

I'd guess that the new aluminium cover is thicker than the original chromed steel cover and that could put part of the inner surface closer to the points. Without any insulation there would be an increased chance of a short. Heat expansion of the metal might just put it close enough to make the difference?
