Out & About / Motorcycle Live 2022
« on: November 23, 2022, 10:27:41 AM »
Has anyone else been to the NEC to visit Motorcycle Live this year. I went yesterday, and was disappointed with the show. It is the first time I have been since 2019, couldn't go last year as it clashed with my 60th birthday. There were a number of manufactures missing, Moto Guzzi, &  Aprillia being 2 of the big brands absent, but it was the absence of most of the small aftermarket suppliers who used to attend but now cannot afford to.

For me the highlights of the show were: The Jim Goose replica on the BSH stand, the Royal Enfield and AJS stands and the Kawasaki H2 supercharged engine  in a display case.

Apologies that I didn't take any pictures to post with the review :(

Any other thoughts?

Tricks & Tips / Wiring loom
« on: May 28, 2022, 05:43:36 PM »
Whilst I appreciate that I haven't posted much on the forum to date, having decided to take a year out from work after working right through Covid, I had hoped I would have more time to concentrate on pursuing hobbies I enjoy, namely motorbikes and radio control model helicopters & aeroplanes. I turned 60 last December and after discussions with the wife I decided to take at least a year out from the 31st March this year and hopefully not return to work at all, but we shall have to see happens. Unfortunately whilst being taken out for a meal by my boss, on my last day at work, my wife phoned to say that her brother had been found dead by the Police, after they had broken in to his flat after one of his neighbours had reported his concern to them, this ended up with the coroner as a sudden death and my first month was spent sorting everything out and tidying up the loose ends, still a couple to finalise.

After the funeral I wanted to start on a 1980 Z650F1 which I bought from D&K a couple of years ago, after a good clean out of the carbs it ran really well, so I carried out an oil and filter change along with a new air filter and began checking over the electrics and discovered that it was not charging, I noticed that the connections to the reg / rec where corroded and rather that clean them up I just replaced them with new bullet connectors, it was at this point I discovered that the wiring was badly corroded internally, although most of the bullet connectors where in good condition. The picture below illustrates the condition of the wire under the protective outer sheath.

I then took some voltage readings, firstly ignition switched off, across the battery,

Then on a brown lead which is feed from the  ignition switch when turned on,

This showed that in less than 2 meters of wiring that I had a 2 volt drop in voltage due to the corrosion in the wire, and a good candidate for a melted loom at the least and possibly a bike on fire at the worst, a new loom was probably the best option. After placing and order with Vehicle Wiring Products for what I needed I stripped the loom from the bike and made a start on creating a new loom.

I am not claiming that I am any kind of expert at this, I just thought I would share how I go about it and this may help someone else have a go. The first thing you need to do is create a jig to hold the loom so that  you can fit the old loom and hold it in place whilst you  create the new one.

The screws are fitted at every point that a wire comes out of the loom or there is a significant change in direction.

This shows the old loom on the jig.

CB500/550 / My 500K2
« on: January 12, 2020, 09:45:41 PM »
This is my second attempt to post a a continuation to my introduction from a couple of weeks ago. I have restored a couple of bikes over the years my first was a Suzuki GT380A but unfortunately I do not have any pictures of this it went back to Japan. Next I restored a a CB175 K4

I enjoyed restoring this but not riding it so it was sold on, after this I set about restoring a KH250 B1 always wanted one but bought a 250 Superdream instead in 1979. This took the best part of 7 years to complete but is totally original apart from the expansion chambers and seat cover, won't be doing this again hideously expensive, but this is a keeper.

Actually it has got electronic ignition and a replacement rectifier, but these make it more reliable.
I bought the CB500 from D&K in June 2018 as I had always wanted one because of the 4 into 4 exhaust. The chrome work on the bike was great apart from the wheel rims which were both shot, also the handlebars fitted were appalling.

After taking delivery of the bike I had to rebuild both wheels with stainless rims and spokes, replaced the brake pads, shoes, hoses, master cylinder seal and piston, caliper seal and piston and chain and sprocket set. I also had to rewire both handle bar switches and the handle bars themselves. The tank needed cleaning out and relining and the carburettors had to be totally stripped, ultrasonically cleaned and rebuilt with keyster kits. The bike ticked over beautifully once I had resolved the issue with the wrongly sized connector I had fitted to my new wiring to the kill switch. This is how the bike currently looks.

I have no intention of a full on restoration this time, but will replace / repair sections as time and money permits, however I do want to obtain a replica 4 into 4 exhaust when they become available again.

New Member Introductions / Hi from Leicestershre
« on: December 14, 2019, 03:09:36 PM »
Just thought it was about time I introduced myself to the forum, I have been a member since July 2018  and have been reading the forum whilst getting a CB500K2 that I bought from D&K last year road worthy. I have restored a couple of bikes in the past my last one being a KH250 which has taken 7 years to complete. I have a build log of it online on the KH and S series forum here
https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/kawasakikhregister/let-the-madness-begin-t5636.html . I will post pictures of the 500 when I am on my home PC, haven't got access to them at the moment. I have got it to the point where it is now insured, road worthy & registered but the weather is to cold in my opinion to ride at the moment! It has taken a lot of work to get it to this condition and I intend to improve it over the years rather than go for a full nut and bolt restoration.
