CB500/550 / Rumbling with clutch lever pulled in
« on: April 26, 2017, 04:32:02 PM »
My CB500 doesn't get a lot of use but I fire it up weekly and let it run for half a hour. The clutch plates tend to stick to one another and I have to rev it and stand on the rear brake to free them. I did that last week but noticed afterwards a rumbling sound when I held the clutch lever in.
I've taken the outer clutch cover off and noticed rubbing on the raised boss on the inside of the cover (I have photographed it). It looks to have been rubbed by the clutch plate cover. Everything seems tight, there is a little bit of in/out movement in the clutch basket but I don't think it is exessive (1mm).
I'm just wondering if I've damaged anything?

Need 4 downpipes re-chroming, can't believe the prices these days, so far Niphos is the cheapest at £240 plus VAT. Anyone know any good platers at good rates?

CB500/550 / CB500 carb jets, European import
« on: February 01, 2016, 08:59:29 PM »
I have a 500K2 originally imported from Italy, the engine was rebuilt some years ago by Bryanj and the carbs were rebuilt by a local bike specialist around the same time. I have recently heard the Euro bikes had different smaller jets to the UK bikes. My bike has never made it past 100mph despite running well and sounding healthy. Does anyone know if the jets were indeed different and if this would make a difference.

CB500/550 / Tyres
« on: June 22, 2015, 07:47:13 PM »
My CB500 was fitted with Avon Roadrunners rear-120/90-18 and front 100/90-19. I changed the rear for a Roadrider 120/90-18 without checking what the recommended fit was. It's now time to replace the front. The handling has always been fine so am wondering whether to go for the Roadrider 100/90-19. The recommend is 3.25x19" which is avaliable as an AM26 but not sure how much difference there is between the two tyres. It seems the AM26s are slightly smaller than the older AM20s, can anyone confirm this?

CB500/550 / Secondhand 500/4 exhaust on ebay

Was looking on ebay when I saw this item;-

Couldn't believe he was asking £150 for a single pipe which is showing signs of pitting on the outside so can only imagine what it's like on the inside. It does look like Honda have stopped making them for the time being which is unfortunate as the design is prone to rotting. I bought a set about three years ago from Dave Silver for £85 each plus VAT. Always spray WD40 down the pipes before and after running in the winter months, cant believe the amount of water which sprays out when it's running on cold days.

CB500/550 / Seat trim
« on: December 02, 2011, 04:54:51 PM »
Hi, I know this is a pretty long shot but has anyone willing to sell a spare chrome effect trim for the CB500 seat and as importantly the two chrome trim ends which fit either side at the tank end. I've managed to buy a fairly decent seat but the trim is a bit tired and the seller took the two end fittings off before selling it.

CB500/550 / Carburettor breather pipes
« on: March 24, 2011, 02:36:07 PM »
Hi,

When I switch off my CB500 a small quantity of petrol leaks from the breather pipe which runs from the mid-body (as opposed to the float chamber) of the second carb.

Does anyone know why this is?

Many thanks,

Andy

CB500/550 / Electrical woes-no current
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:17:13 PM »
Hi,

I rode my CB500 today as usual and turned the engine off with the ignition key. The headlight and indicator were on when I switched the ignition off. When I came to restart it there was no electrical power to any part of the bike.

I assumed it must have been the main fuse. On checking it I discovered it had a 30amp rather than 15amp fuse (which I have now replaced with the correct one) but it was intact.

My bike is a K2 Italian import with later type wiring housing three fuses in the fuse box, a 7amp, 5amp and 15amp fuse-all OK.

I haven't performed any recent electrical modifications and cant figure out why I don't get any electrics at all. No warning lights, horn etc. The battery is healthy and I continuity to the solenoid through to the ignition switch. I have continuity across the red/yellow and green/red wires of the solenoid. The kill switch is obviously in the RUN position

I have continuity from the starter button switch to the block connector under the seat for both wires.

With the red/yellow and green/red wires disconnected leading from the solenoid and the ignition on and the starter button depressed-there is no continuity between the two large contacts on the top of the solenoid.

Is the solenoid at fault or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Many thanks,

Andy

CB500/550 / SOHC specialists
« on: November 17, 2010, 10:17:29 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone know of any reputable sohc specialists in the north west of England? I think my CB500 motor is generally pretty tired with low compression and the proverbial notchy gearbox which once warmed up doesn't like going from 1st to 2nd. I'm considering a full engine and gearbox restoration/rebuild. Phil Denton is a couple of hours away in north Wales, I've seen his adverts in the classic bike magazines. Is there anyone else in the Liverpool/Preston north west region?

CB500/550 / CB500K1 Headlight, European spec
« on: August 16, 2010, 06:38:21 PM »
Hi,

I need a replacement headlight for my CB500, I've looked on Dave Silver's site but they only sell a US spec headlights which doesn't have a sidelight hole. I'm not sure if they have the same bulb housing either. The existing headlight is a Stanley001-1217.

Does anyone know where i can get a replacement headlight?

Do you know whether a CB750K7 headlight will fit as these are still available?

Cheers, Andy

CB500/550 / Exhaust stud
« on: July 29, 2010, 12:02:42 PM »
Hi,

One of the exhaust studs on my cylinder head is loose. I can tighten it in but when I come to fit the exhaust and tighten the nut it only tightens so much and then slowly starts to pull the stud out.

Is there a product which will fix the stud in place? The problem isn't serious enough yet to warrant drilling the hole out and tapping a larger stud. If it was at all possible I'd like to keep all the studs and nuts the same size.
