Title: Powder coating rims
Post by: DomP on January 25, 2024, 11:21:01 AM
My rims are so rough I'm thinking of Powder coating them black, does any one have any experience of this of stripped chrome rims, how hard wearing is it going to be with tyre changes etc?

Many of the aluminium rims have been powder coated over the years, workable but you need to be careful with use of rim protectors etc if you go near them with any type of lever.

Is it just the rims without spokes etc ?  I've seen some like this complete assembly coated, that have cracked off the layer around spoke nipples etc, that's from general flexing in use.

Yeah just the rims coated, chipping or cracking was my fear

Maybe easier with new bare steel rims from Hagon. Even de-plating chrome these days is expensive.

Leominster powdercoat quoted me £35 a rim to blast and powdercoat them, I'd assumed (probably naively) that blasting would work to provide a key

Don't powder coat over the chrome blasted or not, it will come off in no time. Spokes and rims come under quite a stress that causes flexing. May be better to try a process like Ceracoat which is a ceramic coating. It flexes better than powder.

Probably cheaper to just buy a new rim Dom.

Didn't I just say that Ken. Or were you meaning a new chromed rim.

If I ended up getting new I'd probably keep them chrome, DS mid range the best bet then?

Not sure how close they are to original  but how do CWC compare pricewise?
I do know some have had issues on some variants - they will no doubt flag up problems.

If I'm being perfectly honest I'm trying to stop the runaway train that is my budget on this project, wheels is something I can always return to if a cheap powdercoat fails.  Either that or I scuff up the rims and once I've refitted tyres mask them off and do a cheapo spray job on them.

Runaway train budgets, now there's a subject I'm an expert at in all the wrong ways.

You've all advised me not to so I think I'm going to go and powder coat them anyway😁!  They aren't going to chrome nicely so £35 a rim is all I really stand to lose,  well that and some time.
