Title: Igniter melting!!!
Post by: ste131 on December 17, 2011, 08:31:01 PM
Hi all!
In the process of sorting a CB650z and noticed that the top igniter has melted all the black stuff out.. What could cause this? Main fuse has been replaced with a nail  :P

If its the same as the CB900 and CBX ignitors, IKO's if I remember right, the potting does tend to go soft and run out (rather crawl out) over years, its not so much melted quickly. My brothers CB900 had the same problem so he turned them upside down on their bracket to let the potting run back in LOL :D :D

My CB900FZ has done this too.
It just looks nasty. Still runs.

Thanks Tomb. I will look into getting it done! Looked for a set of second hand ones but think they were off a CB900. Didn't say OKI MPS-200 on them so didnt buy.

Ste this is from your introduction post but I'll answer it here in case anyone does a search later.

I found some info on the Honda ignition modules, Clicky (http://www.pazon.com/files/PDF/HONDACB.pdf), it appears the same as I had been informed about the IKO units, that they're the same unit on all the Hondas of that era. I bought some to try on my Yam XS1100 but went with the OE in the end, but kept the IKO units to convert my 500/4 to electronic (havn't bothered yet as the 500/4 points are so bloody reliable but thats another story ;))

So you should be able to use any original Honda units from the models listed on the link

Thanks for the info  ;D
Rebuilt the bike yesterday and balanced the carbs. Still runs pretty rough. Better than it did though! Think I need to whip the carbs off again and get them stripped and cleaned a bit more. I only gave them a once over with carb cleaner and removed the main jets. Somethings not right and its a heavy bugger to push home if it all goes wrong!
