« on: July 11, 2015, 04:55:40 PM »
I have stuck one of my bikes on ebay its an orange one and I wonder if any of you experts can have a swatch at how it presents and whether you think there are any bits I didn't do properly. I'm about to start my other one and any comments welcome.

Oh and by the way it took me 4 years so not too hard on me Please.

CB750 / clutch drag
« on: July 01, 2015, 06:40:28 PM »
my cb 750k 1974 is dragging the clutch a bit, been looking at the threads and it seems to be a common fault.

I have adjusted the lever inside the casing and changed the cable but although all the parts are moving properly it still drags a bit. I have been riding it about and perhaps its just me being fussy but I cant adjust the cable leaving a little slack it needs adjusted up. but it doesn't slip.

I have memories of my 250 back in the 70s doing the same thing.

is this something that's normal on these old bikes, but  if not any advice before I pull the plates out. phew one step forwards and two back.

CB750 / carburator float level again
« on: May 18, 2015, 06:59:53 PM »
Mines a 1974 750 and prior to the carb level adjustment it was running rich on 1 and 2, on over run it was popping like it was running lean but other than that it wasn't too bad.

Took carbs off trying to do it in place is impossible, took the float bowls off and one carb was well out of adjustment " the 26mm" from the others but the others also needed adjustment to bring it within the 26mm .

Here is where it is so vague these carbs have a cut out on either side so the tool I made up "credit card" sits on the gasket it has to because of the cut out.  I imagine if the tool was thicker it might bridge this cut out

Having adjusted the carbs to 26mm from the gasket it now runs like a burst ball, its hesitating opening the throttle and surges up suddenly like it was getting a chunk of fuel and then settles off idle.

If the float is too high because I set it from the gasket then its running lean, yes/no ?

Does anybody confidently know where the 26mm is measured from the threads don't show it clearly because they use a Honda tool which is thicker and probably sits on the edge and not the gasket.

CB750 / registration
« on: April 17, 2015, 06:39:26 PM »
My log book has been issued for my first restored bike and its come back with the letter M for a 1974, however the letter is at the start of the registration indicating its a 1994, although the log book indicates a 1974. Is that normal I only noticed after I got a plate made up and it sat next to my other bike a p reg 1997

The taxation class is listed as historical vehicle and although I sent a cheque for the tax nothing came back indicating it has been paid but if it's historical does that mean that its tax free and perhaps they have not got back to me yet with my cheque.

Might be an expert at this by the end of this I hope.

CB750 / blowing main fuse
« on: April 03, 2015, 01:11:51 PM »
my cb750k 1974 has blown the main fuse twice, blew today after the mot but has been fine until then it has only blown twice since I started restoring her. checking the wiring diagram it lists two items but was hoping there was a common fault or its just a case that they hate stop start repeatedly like during the mot, rode there fine and back.  Checking the wiring diagram and its the main fuse that supplies ignition lights and start function that I lost, tracking it back it goes from the fuse to the ignition switch and off in a different direction from the fuse also to the rectifier obviously for the charging. Charging ok though.

That's one down just to start the other one for restoration now, what a nice bike to ride. Nice sound and rides fairly well for its age and the brakes are fine, I thought they would be rubbish but nothing that you would be concerned with. Guys taking pictures at the mot station made me feel special. My other one came in a red colour 1976, fuel tap on left side but its a shed so its gona take the two years my last one took to get right. In 1976 it came in red and a nice blue do you guys think it would be wrong if I did it in the nice blue instead of the red, I always wanted a blue one in the 70s but like most of us had no money

CB750 / paint
« on: December 15, 2011, 01:23:53 PM »
Done a bit of searching and cant find any real help with the paint other than my candy orange is difficult to do and it's about 500 quid to get somebody to do it.

Does anybody know what the paint codes are for this and what the process is for laying on the paint. I know that Honda did not have codes for doing this but since folk are painting them these days there must be codes for the paints they are using.

I have all the equipment for painting, not gone to water based paints yet, doubt I will to be honest but would prefer to do the painting myself. that's part of the fun during a restoration.

CB750 / Indicators
« on: December 13, 2011, 12:03:03 PM »
Hi folk my 74 750k series has two bolts that hold the headlamp on, these bolts have holes in them with the wires for the indicators but no indicators. My other one has indicators fitted, larger than these ones but fitted to the holes to the rear of the lamp.

I cant find a photo that can show me how the indicators attach to these bolts, I dont have the indicators which makes it a jigsaw without a picture and I need to purchase two front ones.

Can anybody tell me how they fit on and what's missing please.

Also looking to get some chroming done got a quote for doing the 4 exhausts 600 quid, is that too much or a fair price, I will do all the repair work on the holes so they are just plating and polishing. Have not tried to get the covers off the silencers yet but suspect the screws are all going to snap off.

CB750 / next project
« on: December 05, 2011, 04:39:44 PM »
Nearly finished my K4 and although have been split about how to do my next one a 76k, the price of exhausts is over 1k and it just aint worth it.

My other choice was to cafe it but went off that idea as well and made up my mind to do a decent cr750 replica, something with no lights, and racing exhausts, something for the nicer days. Being a 76 allows me to do most of the things you cant do on a more modern bike because of the legislation.

Anyway can't tear her down just yet until I do the dry build and mark up all the bits to come off and weld on bits.

Does anybody know where I can get parts for this at a sensible price, and since I want twin discs with my standard wheel does anybody know how to go about this. The proper brakes are over 1k each and I doubt my pockets are deep enough.

I don't mind purchasing the alloy fuel tank, seat etc, but was thinking I could make the oil tank myself using the fitments from mine. Is there a ruling on how much oil you can put in this tank before you risk flooding the engine, or any other parameters I need to take into consideration. I made a log burner/boiler, pressure tested it and it was fine so I guess that making a tank is simple enough. A drawing would be nice, with dimensions if anybody has one. Might even chop up my fuel tank, don't know yet.

CB750 / front forks
« on: November 30, 2011, 05:03:56 PM »
Working away on my project and the next job is the forks.

Will I get the oil out and in through the drain on the leg perhaps with a syringe, was reading that if you take the caps off the top that there is a big zebidie in there that is gona launch into my face. The forks are off the bike of course, but they don't need stripped they are fine, just want to change the oil.

Read that 145cc is what is required per leg, is that correct.

The other thing is that the bike came with mental chopper bars so my cables are too long, I read that they are crimped on, anybody think I will get away with cutting off the nipples drilling a hole and soldering them, or is there a better way around this.

CB750 / headlamp from us to uk
« on: November 19, 2011, 06:47:37 PM »
Got a couple of USA import spec bikes and need to know if the headlamps have to be changed or are they normally fitted with neutral straight down dip, the bikes are in bits so can't check. Can't find anything on a search, infact if any the other lights don't meet the specs as well if anybody is up to speed on the legislation please.

Got the frame all painted on one of them, working on the engine now and should get it back in next week. Got a nice seat cover from David silvers, the rocker cover gasket is a bit costly though, need to make sure I don't damage the one on the next bike, the cleaning up on the covers etc is taking ages.

CB750 / Start of refurb
« on: July 04, 2011, 12:40:30 AM »
Bought two usa cbs, 750, 74 and 77 models they have the oil tanks with the cap on the outside.

What's the best way to get the engine out, lift it out or lift the frame off the engine on it's side.

The chain drive was a bit noisy so took off the chain and had a look at the front sprocket, it seems to be a bit loose on the shaft, it needs a new chain and sprocket set so perhaps the wear is in the sprocket?

Is it acceptable to spray and lacquer the frames or does it have to be powder coating, don't know much about these things in my day the frames got painted.

Anybody give me some ball park figures for chroming, say a wheel perhaps and perhaps my exhausts once I repair them, they seem to be about 1k to replace so that's most of my budget out the window, so it is going to have to be a repair.

Do I need to restore the painted areas on the engine or can I polish all the engine up, and if it's going to have to be painted again, that grey primer colour is there a special paint you get to prevent it flaking off with the heat or can I use normal paint with heat resistant lacquer.

New Member Introductions / newbee
« on: July 03, 2011, 01:25:33 AM »
Hi guys, I'm from scotland and near a place called lanark, I'm a mechanic to trade retired now at 50 and spending most of my time with my bikes.

I have a honda cb1000 big one, a blackbird, carb version and just recently bought two american import cb750s, one is a 1974 and the other a 1977, both the model with the oil tank and cap on the outside.

I intend to spend a few months bringing them back to life again, one I would like to cafe but not too sure at the minute.

I don't know a lot about the 750s I was just a boy at that time and could barely purchase the fuel for a bike never mind a 750, but always wanted one.

I am going to have to spend a few hours on here searching to make sure I do the right things to them so they are not spoiled. the handle bars are wrong on them both for the uk, the paint has been changed and can't find a paint code, one has a king and queen seat ffs, both need chains and sprockets, the exhausts have a couple of holes in them, they both need painting and if colour is not on a sticker somewhere then they are getting the most popular colour. One has the rev counter cable missing and a plug fitted to the head for some reason, and so the list goes on.

Not sure where to start to be honest.
