Title: Refurbed 400/4 Headers - Now on eBay !!
Post by: AshimotoK0 on March 13, 2020, 02:25:36 PM
My mate Graham has just got these back from the chromers (Genuine not repro) and he is selling one set only ....if anyone is interested I can put you in touch. You will have to be quick though as it's an eBay  £1 final fee listing weekend and he did mention putting them on there.  I think  he also has the rechromed original clamps and insulator sleeves for them too

I am very, very tempted Ash. But, as my 400/4 is a regular rider and only gets a wash once a year, they would just look too good on my bike and then I would want to sort out all the other little bits that have seen better days and then I would be on a slippery downward slope to a total restoration and Im not interested in doing that. My originals I have fitted will probably see me out anyway 😁😁😁 Thanks for offering on the forum though.

They look fantastic, but I'm afraid to ask how much! 😮

What are the rings shown on the top left?

I didn't see anything like these associated with my original exhaust headers when I removed and disassembled them and can’t find them listed on the parts lists for the exhaust system.

Am I missing something or are these not part of the exhaust system? 🤔

I have never seen them either Ian. Not part of a 400/4 exhaust system that for sure.

Ha hah nothing to do with 400/4 Ian Chrome ribs for CB72/CB160 front forks  (were in with the same batch of chroming)

By the way the lady at Prestige was telling Graham what a good job you had done on yours.

I couldn’t have done it without the plates that Graham pressed.
It would have been a patched up bodge job without them.
I just hope mine comes back looking as good as these.

All I can say is 'DROOL!' ..looking at the price of these old wrecks I think your friends pristine beauties will be out of reach! https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CB400F-CB-400-Four-1975-77-Original-Front-Exhaust-Headers-Down-Pipes/333527989636?hash=item4da7d13d84:g:GJMAAOSwxxJeVqUd

He's  a  very fair bloke .. deffo won't rip you off. We both swap parts with each  all of the time .. a much nicer 'old fashioned' way of restoring IMHO.

He restored the Motorcyle Mechanics  one way back (and a CB250K2)...Even got Dinah May (the original 400/4 model girl) to pose on it at a show.

Well ..judging by the way the lady at Prestige was talking to Graham yours will be just as good Ian.

Now on eBay BIN at £425

Bit surprised that nobody PM'ed me about interest in these. I have known people pay that for just the chroming.

I was very tempted Ash but I'm spending a shed load of cash on recommissioning my Triton and on buying bits for the BIL's Z400j. I would have bought these for the 400/4 I restored for the o/h and fitted with a pattern exhaust (still with 0 miles on it, 3 years after I built it!) but I can't justify the cost and considering I'll be selling this bike in the next couple of months (watch this space!!). I have a complete set of genuine headers that need a rechrome, my chrome won't touch exhaust pipes. Do you know how much Colin paid for his rechrome and did he do any of the prep work?
Thanks for posting though, I'm surprised you had no interest as original pipes are the hard to get holy grail for restorers.
Cheers
Dave

I saw a post from Graham about the headers on FB the other day and he said 3 sets of headers and 2 set of handlebars cost him £633 to have chromed. If you divide that by 3 and also obviously take into account his costs for purchasing the pipes, filling the dents and scrapes etc with bronze or whatever it was, I don't think his price on ebay is too bad at all really. Its certainly not a rip off price.

Well DS sells his repro's for £358 without the clamps etc but they are only single skinned, so I think Grahams price is spot on fair.

Has anyone fitted DS's repro's and have they blued after running for a decent period?

Yes Ash, that makes Graham's price even more attractive really. I hope someone that really needs them buys them..... or maybe they will be bought by a 'panic buyer' 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Thought about it as well but big question marks about job at moment. Couldn’t get the idea past credit control.
