Title: Switchgear halves
Post by: Oggers on March 30, 2020, 05:09:00 PM
Folks

Many thanks for the strobe response - will cogitate and revert....

Next minor issue on the list - Fitting the RH switchgear halves back together after a repaint, it seems there is a bit of trade off between obtaining a nice flush joint between the halves and having a smooth throttle return action when releasing it after twisting ACW for power. I also noted the throttle return wasn't great prior to disassembly....

Thoughts most welcome.

I cant remeber which way round but you tighten one side fully the the other till switch is tight, I THINK its front side first but it is many decades since i uncrated, built and pdi'd a Honda

You tighten the front side fully, ie, furthest away from you whilst sitting on bike and then do the back side, the side facing you whilst sitting on bike last. You will be left with a gap on the back side of the housings which should be there.

... since we’re on the subject of tightening clamps correctly, does the same above sequence apply to the handlebar clamps - eg 750K2 and CB400F.
And wot about the brake reservoir clamp?

Finally... why?

Ta,
Simon

With these types of clamps, if you were able to tighten them so that both faces met, then it would probably mean that they are not gripping the handlebar/axle tight enough. The main reason for tightening the front one fully first means that there is no forward facing gap allowing the ingress of water and dirt.

Yes, and yes.  Attached is page 6 from Honda's CB400 dealer setup manual.  See steps 17 and 18...
