Would it be worth getting a smaller gauge?

Where did you get it from? I can only find big boxes of it that are £35+

Look on ebay or amazon for a small box of various thickness Plastigauge. That's what I bought for mine. It had small quantities of Red, Green and White if I remember correctly.

The sprag clutch only fails if you regularly turn the bike over with a weak battery. My dad's 1200 trophy was fine with over 85k on the clock. I had one fail on the Aprilia after I neglected the battery. So I've learnt my lesson and never attempt to start a bike that's stood for awhile without giving it a quick top-up

Trouble is, buying one now you don't know what the previous owners have done with it. That's why you need to have a good check of the starter.

Soak it in lots of releasing oil- WD40 will do if you have nothing else. Use heat on it as well if you can.
It may take a few days but keep trying.

The 400 has filter gauzes fitted inside the tank. If they are fitted and not damaged you don't need the problems caused by fitting a second filter.

I had a Trident 900 for 6 years and did a lot of miles on it, great bikes. The seat is high so not a good choice if short in the leg. All the Hinkley 900s have a problem with the starter sprag clutch spring eventually. Early ones have an access plate, so easy to replace. Later ones don't have access without full engine out to fix it. That's progress!
If you want one check the starter works properly.
Have a look at Bandits and Fazers but check for corrosion,  paintwork and plating not the best.

An update...
Thanks for the input everyone; I appreciate it.  We decided not to do the France/Italy trip BUT we now plan to ride up to John o' Groats.  We went to Land's End a couple of years ago so we need to "complete" the trip.

Have fun. 🏍🙂

CB350/400 / Re: 1975 CB400F Rear Tank Rubber
« on: March 22, 2024, 07:04:01 PM »
They're all like that unfortunately.  When I bought my bike the original rubber was quite hard and had been damaged by previous owners trying to get the rubber on and off.
I bought a new one, but still really tough to stretch it over the tank tab. The tab could be a lot shorter, I guess Honda over-engineered the fixing to make absolutely sure it never came off by accident.
I use a spring puller to get mine off or the zip tie method works well.

Arcing at the points usually means a faulty condenser. The new pattern ones don't last long at all.

If there is a crack I would be worried about water getting in. Rain or when washing the bike. Not good inside your engine. 😖

Steady! That tank rack is the best item on my 5TA. The kids know it as 'the fish and chips rack' for its usual load!

Exactly! I've kept mine on my Tiger 100, very useful, a forerunner of tankbags. 👍

I had a good nosey at the 400 bikes on Sunday. They do look good build quality and look bigger than a 400 single. 👍
