The original type 400/4 kickstart lever. I'm using one from a different model, cb250 I think.

You could use a strong alloy like Duralumin if you can find some. The plates will have to be thicker than the original steel ones to get the same strength.

Happy retirement Ian. My dad's now been retired for longer than he worked. I've never seen him smile at something so much!

Have a long and happy retirement.  8)

Interchangeability / Re: CB650 comstar interchangeability

Cafe Racer Kits do a comstar to spoke wheel conversion kit.
Bit pricey, but probably the easiest way to do it.  :)

There's a torque figure in the manual, can't remember what it is but it's a low figure - 4 or5 lb ft I think.

Use paraffin (safer than petrol) with a firm brush and, as said, lots of hard work.  :)

I dealt with Dennis at noxandrattles who supplies Stainless Parts for 400/4 He told me he had stripped lots of 400/4 engines and never came across a washer on the camshaft, Today he contacted meto let me know he was doing the Topend of a 400/4 and lo and behold there was a a washer on the camshaft.

Could it be a spacer shim, so only there if needed?

Tricks & Tips / Re: Alloy Bearing retainer removal
« on: January 16, 2015, 03:48:01 PM »
I made a cheap, easy bearing retainer removal tool out of a piece of steel flat bar and 2 short 4mm bolts.

Just drill 2 holes in the bar the same distance apart as the holes in the retainer, tap the holes 4mm and screw in the 2 bolts. If you don't have any taps you could drill clearance holes for the bolts and use a nut to hold them in position, just use slightly longer bolts.

They should locate in a pair of holes in the retainer and unscrew it nicely. Mine came out no problem, no damage and I'll keep the tool handy for future use.

If you've got a really stubborn one(oo-err!) and worried about damaging the retainer it would be quite easy to make a wider one and fit 4 bolts to fit all 4 holes on the retainer.

If that doesn't work then by the time you get the retainer out it will be scrap. New ones are available and quite cheap.

Both my bikes have survived the winter ravages so far. They're both safely tucked up in the garage which is part of the house. If the garage loses it's roof the whole house has gone!

Some Dundee drivers can't understand the need to slow down at all on snow or ice and have been throwing themselves off the road at regular intervals. http://www.thecourier.co.uk/news/local/dundee/car-crashes-into-dundee-flat-as-snow-brings-chaos-to-dundee-s-roads-1.784823

The bikes will be out on the rare occassions the roads are dryish and not covered in salt and slime. Roll on springtime!

CB350/400 / Re: Exhaust carbon build up
« on: January 02, 2015, 01:49:02 PM »
When I cleaned up the exhaust ports on my 400's head I prised out the old gaskets only to find a second set of gaskets underneath!

The exhaust gaskets are crushable to form a seal, so you should use new ones each time.

Sump washers in alloy or copper are just plain washers so can be annealed to soften them for re-use. Don't heat them to red hot though, they're not mild steel. Just heat them up and quench in cold water. Dry off and ready to go.  :)

CB350/400 / Re: Braided brake lines
« on: November 26, 2014, 10:00:35 PM »
On all my sohc hondas the braided lines completely replace the whole brake line, caliper to master, some still use the junction on the yokes, others move the front brake switch to a banjo in placevof the pressure switch on the yoke. My bikes are cb550 and 500 so may be a bit different.

Great. That helps a lot. Cheers.  :)

CB350/400 / Braided brake lines
« on: November 26, 2014, 09:29:34 PM »
I bought a set of braided hoses for the front brake but the bottom hose is much longer than the standard one.

It's long enough to go all the way to the caliper without using the metal brake line. Is that ok as long as it's secured away from the wheel?

If it is, I've got a brand new repro metal brake line going spare!

Very nice. It looks immaculate. I like old Triumphs (preferably without the 'skirt'/ bathtub).

I used to have a T100 and a T120R and will get another one sometime. Prices are getting silly though.  ???

CB350/400 / Re: DSS replica downpipes
« on: November 06, 2014, 03:46:34 PM »
We are the manufacturer of the replica 400-4 downpipes sold by David Silver.

There has been a fitting problem related to recent production- we are in the final stages of updating manufacturing jigs and making some minor changes to ensure that this is resolved and the "normal" fitting process is resumed. This has involved working on a bike as clearances (even with the original system) has always been very close

We are working hard to make sure that David Silver can resume supply of the latest (no problems!) production very shortly

apologies to anyone that has struggled with this recent stock- sorry !!!!!!!

Thanks for the reply. Good to know progress is being made. Cheers.
