Misc / Open / New EU Consultation on MoT Procedures
« on: September 06, 2010, 10:39:06 PM »
http://ec.europa.eu/yourvoice/ipm/forms/dispatch?form=roadworthiness

The EUroprats want to ask for peoples opinions on the possible standardisation of MoT testing across the EU states...so long as we don't get the German TuV procedure as it's very stringent on non-complying parts & home modifications. It has a time limit of 90 minutes which is plenty of time so long as you've not had too many shandies.

Interchangeability / Footrest Rubbers.
« on: June 18, 2010, 02:16:54 PM »
Back in my early days of riding my little Honda 125 the footrest rubbers were just a push on to the main bracket for the sidestand.
http://www.motorbase.com/uploads/candc/2009/06/30/fs_773598.jpg
So when I wanted some simple footrest rubbers for the modified 750F2 of mine, I made up some dural footpegs that mounted into the end of the back brake lever pivot shaft & into the left hand ally casting, then bought some of the 125 rubbers. They worked so well, that when I bought my Exup1000 I did the same to that bike. It dosn't look too bad, are more comfortable on a long journey, & can be easily removed if I wanted the racier look.

Where's My Old Bike? / Honda CB125S
« on: June 17, 2010, 01:26:49 AM »
In a recent copy of Classic Motorcycle Mechanics there was a blue & white CB125S...this is exactly the same as my very first bike that I had back in 1975, although it didn't look anything as good as the one in the magazine article.

I wonder where LMD 58K is now...it dosn't show up on the DVLA website, so it may well have been scrapped.

Tricks & Tips / Noisey top end on early CB550F1
« on: June 12, 2010, 11:17:42 AM »
I once owned an early 550F1 & it came to me with a very rattly top end. I tried resetting the tappet clearances but no joy. Even after changing the oil it didn't quieten down at all. So I had the rocker cover off & started to dismantle this part.

What I found was that on the early 550F1s there are individual rocker shafts for each rocker.

Having procurred a later 550F2 or K3 rocker cover...

Tricks & Tips / Problems Balancing carbs?
« on: June 12, 2010, 11:08:01 AM »
I wrote earlier in another thread about how i've encountered a number of multi-cylinder bikes that've experienced problems with the correct mixture settings & trying to balance the carbs.

If the inlet manifolds are removeable there's normally some sort of seal, & the proximity of this seal to the heat of combustion normally leaves this seal in a pretty sorry state after a few thousand miles. I first encountered this sort of fault on a friend's Kawasaki Z400 twin many moons ago. The bike had been into a dealer who couldn't find the fault despite a weeks worth of labour...they initially tried to suggest that it was the way that he was riding the bike...

Anyway, whenever you have the carbs off a bike like a 500/550 four it's a good idea to have a quick look see at the seals...as we all know the carbs are difficult to get on & off at the best of times...even more demoralising when the fault is there when you've just spent two or three hours getting the carbs back in place.

Other Bikes / Honda CB125T2 Restoration
« on: April 26, 2010, 10:49:46 AM »
I've had this bike for quite a while now & have decided that i'd like to restore it...

I don't want to go silly & try & make everything exactly right as I would if I was restoring something more worthwhile like a Honda 550/750, but it can be a long term project to maybe make it look similar to what was in the brochure of its day...

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Camshaft Regrinders
« on: April 08, 2010, 11:56:16 PM »
I have had several camshafts reprofiled by these people over the years. The best one was the 750F2 cam that was done for me for 'fast road use' when I needed a cam that was not as aggressive as the Yoshimura Road/Track cam but was better than the standard grind. Newmans ground some of the base circle which increased the lift & the duration and made a worthwhile differance over standard.

They also reground my Honda XL185S to XR200 spec & my XL250SA cam to XR spec.

Where's My Old Bike? / Nice 500/4 at Brands Festival of 1000 Bikes
« on: March 09, 2010, 12:16:51 PM »

Was this anybody's from here? It was at the Festival years ago when my kids were very young...that's them on the left. This 500/4 had an award for something stuck or rested on the tank, so it had probably been entered into a competition earlier in the day.

Wonder if it's still around...I didn't get a registration number unfortunately.
