CB750 / Re: K series tanks similarities
« on: March 04, 2010, 09:23:14 AM »
I think that after the initial 'wrinkle' Sandcast /  early K0  tanks, the shape was the same until the K7 (which is vastly different) but at some point the petrol tap (petcock) changed sides.

Not sure on K7 tank trim - never actually seen it on the bike. Perhaps someone else knows.
I did the same bit of detective work on a really nice K0 that went for 10k last year, he too had bought mini trim but the bike was spot on and probably  worth the money if you looked into the detail. If you look into a sellers history it can reveal sources of parts (like in the US/germany) that you may normally  overlook (like a cb250 camchain for a 750 or an oval UK rear lamp from a Honda C50/Cd175)

I also saw someone bid 150+ plus for the tank trim with the black stripes which was NOS Genuine Honda on Ebay recently. You can still buy this brand new from David Silver for a fraction of that price.

Don't want to mention any names here but I saw some 'K0/Sandcast' tank trims go on Ebay for over 80 quid last week.

Looking into history I saw purchase of mini car trim (as I suggested as a substitute for the original item  http://www.sohc.co.uk/index.php?topic=2464.0)

The K0 / Sandcast does not have the black stripes in it. (interestingly the 'Brighton Show' bikes I think did have the black stripes)

The mini trim in the 'history' was:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310125757275

Bit cheaper than 80 quid !! and would be enough for several tanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome too from me Ashimoto

Have a look at this and my reply to it stripped out below.

I will probably get NOS in the end but it's an interesting excercise

You are probably right Pete just keep it as standard with its patina and enjoy it. Glad it worked out OK with Chris - I wish there were more people like him on Ebay. Turns out both Chris and I got our hard to find bargain 400/4 NOS bits off David Silver as a result of his first ever advert in MCN in 1986 when he got his hands on a container load of obsolete Honda bits. BTW hope the missus didn't give you too much grief about the bike Invoice

cheers

Andrew who, I used chose a current Honda colour which perfectly matched the original paint under the fork ear reflector of my Candy Ruby red K0. It was a lot less than 700 and mine had the K0 3 -part airbox to do plus lots of repair work on the tank. He sprays the stripes on (as Honda did). I think Dream Machine use transfers.

I considered trying to spray myself (as I did on my 400/4) but Candy is notoriously difficult to get right - one false coat and its a total repaint. Vic Worlds sprays 'so many and a half' colour coats to get the correct colour for the candy blue/green K0.

In the end I just spent the dosh and I am glad I did. The American guy (dondirtbiker) who sells Candy paint kits will not ship overseas.

I sneaked my K0 in like that but she caught my mate and me unloading it off the trailer (she was supposed to be at Am Dramatics but it was cancelled.  BTW She always calls the front forks 'The prongs' for some reason!! Wierd!!

Have a funnystory about 'prongs' too. Yonks ago, my mate told me someone wanted my Cb250K2 and would pay over the odds for it, so I sold it to him. Went off to Greece with the money and came back to find he had hit a tree during the 1st week of ownership and could I help him rebuild it. He wrapped the stanchions up in an old  blanket to take to some dodgy guy who straightens them for cash We  dropped in at the bank on the way for the cash and he plonked the stanchions wrapped in blacket on the counter of the bank. The cashier screamed - she thought it was a shotgun under the blanket and he was a robber. That story is the gospel truth. He never did get that bike back on the road again thank god.

Tell her from 'Honest Ash' that there cottonpickin' K1 is better than money in the bank Pete. To be fair to Cathy she now realises that these bikes are rising in price and you get nothing in interest from the banks for your savings, so if I told here I was buying a few of them I don't think she would mind.

cheers

Daughter coming home today from Uni for her 21st birthday. Wife getting her bedroom ready and moaning about the unsightly motorbike bits I stored under her bed (actually a brand new set of 4  HM300's and a new front fender!!). Texted me at work to ask where the hammer is to put up a picture in daughters room. Got home - bedroom in state of pristine tidiness apart from a CB750 conrod on the bedside table. What's that doing there I ask, thinking she is becoming interested in my bikes - reply "I couldn't find the hammer but I used that thing instead"    :o GRRRRR !! . It was a knac**red one though so I forgave her  ;). ::)

She also forgave me last year when she came home to find my side covers and airbox drying out in the oven. not to mention in '86 when i bunged my 400/4 crankcases in the dishwasher for a final clean  ;D

I don't think if he's bought it Off ChrisR he will have any nasty surprises !! It will be a good 'honest'  bike. If you look at the way K2's have appreciated in value lately I reckon he has an real asset there. I know that the K1 was the highest no. of production but anyone know how many came to the UK. You don't tend to see that many - or is it just me who's not seen them around or on Ebay UK.

Cheers

So you are pleased with it Pete!

Looks pretty good to me considering some of the S*ite you get on Ebay. I am sure you will never lose money on it. It will only appreciate plus all the 300 series parts available from Honda  and common to K0/K1 always seem to be K1 variant (e.g seat, shocks, bars etc)

Hi Pete -  I have got both the spokes and rims (bought before they hiked up price). They are DID but with additional stamped writing and not made in Japan , the chrome looks pretty good and I suspect they are what everyone else uses. Not used mine yet though, still plucking the courage to lace them myself (with the help of my old neighbour who used to do it years ago). I think a lot of chromers will not rechrome rims any more and they would be far more, I suspect to rechrome, than the DSS ones. Rear on K0's have a unique rounded portion but I can't be bothered with all of that 'Sandcast' nonsense. I think most of DSS's stuff is reasonable quality and he gets a good price from the manuf's and passes it on.

Cheers
