CB500/550 / Re: Front number plate
« on: July 18, 2017, 06:15:31 AM »
Hi - my 500 K0 was fitted with a front number plate when bought new in the UK in late '72 (delivered January '73). I'd be happy to send you any photos and dimensions of the original front plate (which I still have) if it might help? Cheers.

Hi, I'd be interested in those dimensions, as I'd like to get silver, or white, on black front number plate for my 1973, K2

CB500/550 / 1973 K2 Push throttle cable - sorted now, thanks
« on: July 18, 2017, 06:13:22 AM »
Hi, I'm looking for the push throttle cable, pn 17920323000, for a 1973 500/4 K2, US spec.

Silvers don't do these, they do the pull cable, but not the push.

Thanks

Chris

The clocks on my 400/4 go up to 120mph Mike but the bike never did and never will do, so a waste of numbers I reckon. I think yours at 110mph does the job just fine  ;D ;D ;D
Back in the late 70s a mate of mine fitted a 460 yoshi big bore, cam and exhaust, it would pull a genuine 130mph, used to make Z1R owners feel very silly away from the lights. Regularly revved to 14,000 rpm with no issues, crank held out fine as well. Anyway, back to the thread, if you have U.K. switchgear fitted, chances are the wires won't be long enough, so you'll need to swap those as well

It's still got the US switchgear so I'm hoping the longer wires are just tucked inside the shorter handlebars. I'll be finding out soon enough I guess. :-)

I am trying this to see if it reduces the flag in a force10 feeling. I put it on this morning. [first fit].

I fitted a Dart Flyscreen to my 2015 Triumph Bonneville the other day to try and reduce the wind force on my body. It was a simple fit, less than ten minutes, and looks really good. I still get buffeted but it has reduced some of the strain on my arms.

Ok, so next question is, what else will I need?

Throttle cables?

Clutch cable?

I assume speedo and tacho cables will be ok?

I got 'US' style bars on mine. I was in the same situation, couldn't find originals in a decent condition and price.

In the end, because I wasn't fussy about originality, I found the measurements of the originals and bought some from M&P. I think there was 1/2 inch difference.

If you like I can dig out the old invoice and find out exactly what they were?

That's the same part no. as the K0 & K1 for USA . I got a really nice part from DK (Twowhelspares)  for less than it was to re-chrome my originals plus they had one of the bar switches on that I used for parts.

You could make a low offer on these or ask them if they are prepared to split. I think I paid around £35 Best offer for the ones I got. Worth a try....definitely cheaper that importing from USA and returns policy is excellent. You are talking £40-50 to get originals re-chromed anyway in my experience.

Hi, I'd seen these previously so I've made an offer and it's been accepted. Bars are on their way to me. Thanks

If I may ask. Why would you want US handlebars?

The bike is an American import that the previous owner tried to make look like a uk model. I would prefer to keep it original and plus I think the higher bars would be more comfortable for my aged body.

I'm looking for a set of US spec handlebars bars for a 1973 K2 500 4. PN 5310032300

David Silver, no stock. EBay not sure if the set on there are the correct ones.

Amy ideas?

This Boyer system uses two, 12volt, coils in series. The difference was unbelievable once I'd rewired them from parallel to series.

This morning, I put the "old", albeit overhauled carbs back on, and it fired up and sat happily idling on the first touch of the starter.

Edit:
Just rereading above, I guess two 6volt coils in series would give 12volt total?

What a momentous day, today, has been in the saga of my 500/4. I feel a huge corner has been turned, a momentous mile stone reached and many more similar metaphors you can think of.

The bad running of my bike continued, so bad it was unridable. I didn't have the time it needed to sort it properly, but whilst working away, I continued researching my symptoms, and found an article about powering the coils straight off the battery, bypassing the ignition switch and the cut off switch. I also downloaded a copy of the electronic ignition system that had been installed on the bike a few years ago, shortly after I'd bought it.

I set to this morning and made up my bypass lead. As I looked at the coils and the wiring diagram to work out where to connect to, I noticed that my coils were wired in parallel and they should be in series. I rewired them, as per the manufacturer of the electronic ignition systems diagram, and hey presto, a transformation occurred. The engine fires first time, every time on the button. The engine ticks over smoothly now and revs freely. I am over the moon.

It still needs some fine tuning but for the first time in three years I am out and about on it with a huge degree of enjoyment.

Thank you to all who have commented and offered advice along the way, much appreciated.

HI johnwebley, thanks for the reply. Since the second set of carbs the engine isn't running hot anymore and the plugs aren't sooty but the engine is down in power and won't rev over 6,000 rpm.
