Title: Back in the fold
Post by: pistonbroke 66 on September 18, 2017, 11:24:46 AM
Morning folks

picking up 78 400/4 next week so thought i'd sign up here. Will be my third one over the years but this time I let some other silly sod do all the restoration !

Will need a few minor bits and bobs to get it to a good standard but all the important stuff has been done. I apologise in advance for any daft questions I may ask!!

cheers

Hi welcome to the forum.
No such thing as a daft question just daft answers.
Plenty of help on the forum and a lot of banter as well. ;)

Hello from Orkney and welcome to the zinc plated nut house,
I was on loan from Yorkshire to Lancashire for about thirty years now desperately saving to become a Scotsman  :)
Lots of useful advice and tips for you on here.  I too have pondered the best method of obtaining a particular bike. Do you buy a real shed and spend a tidy sum bringing it to your standard or perhaps buy a real minter for big bucks?  Perhaps somewhere in between is the way but I've done that and ended up with parts not good enough to use but too good for the bin which you actually paid for in the bike price
Not a 'one size' answer I know.
Just plating some nuts and bolts today to finish the refurb on my 400/4 engine.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I know what you mean Ian and I think i've done both ends of the spectrum. I added up what I'd spent over an eighteen month period on my old one and it was a shedload but I regretted it after selling. Although this one was strong money it has rebuilt engine, powdercoated frame, new paint, wheels and lots of the shiney courtesy of mr.silver....someone did what i'd done previously if you get my drift.

It is going to need some tyres though....the who flung dung ditchfinders have plenty of tread but dont inspire me with confidence, I always got on with dunlop TT's so i'll probably go with them unless someone has a better reccomendation?

Ah! Sunny Lytham, I remember it well.
The home of a good friend to us all, who was nearly broken by a very large motorcycle manufacturer who took exception to him producing irreplaceable cosmetic parts (which they no longer made) He was helping us get our bikes - which someone had initially bought from them, back to a standard for use and shows.
