So started my first fit for the left side exhaust pipes. I ended up using the old front clamps as the new ones appear to have quite tight holes causing me difficulty on number two front pipe as the studs that were Helicoiled are at a very slighty wrong angle.
Quite happy for now to use the old clamps that I had previously  cleaned &  painted.

I fitted number two front pipe first  as its the lower silencer unit. lt lined up quite nicely but number one upper silencer was not wanting to fit with the rear joint miles out. After several attempts and a tea break I tried a new idea.

I fitted the front pipe end first with the clamp in position but not the two collets. With the mounting bracket removed I fitted the connector pipe in place (not tighted but clamp in place) then slipped in the two collets on number one exhaust and nipped up the two retaing nuts finger tight. I then slipped the mounting bracket in place nipping up the silencer nuts and the top hole bracket just slotted in place. I used an old bungee strap on the end of the silencer to keep the connector in place rather than clamping it up.

Tomorrow i am minded to make some minor adjustment to the slotted holes on both brackets so that the front pipe sits more freely into the cylinder head. With a lot of faffing about it took me almost two hours to fit one side including tea break.  So far I've just fitted the left side exhausts - I still need to do a little fettling as I want to make the front pipes fit better into the cylinder head - I might need some wider slots in the top holes of the brackets to allow the silencers to move a mm back. Just to release any unnecessary tension.

I used the kit from Pyramid Parts and whilst it did fit there was only 1.5 turns on the castelated nut. I contact Pyramid and they requested photos and these were duly sent with the measurements. Pyramid admitted the kit was not suitable for the 400/4 despite their listing stating it was and gave me my money back. This was the same kit many have used on here. Pyramid agreed with my findings that it could be dangerous.
I bought a set of caged ball bearings in the end and they fitted perfectly using a 2mm shim on the lower yoke.
I have contacted Pyramid a couple of times since to request an update and I also voluntered to try the stepped bearing they were proposing but they told me they are currently speaking to several restorers of these machines to obtain a solution. Needless to say I had a pig of a job to get the taper races out of my newly powder coated frame!

I believe a member here fitted a Pyramid kit to his 400 without issues I think it was oldchuffer? Anglesey way. My 400 ended up with the caged lower ball race and a taper top as the none pyramid kit left not enough  top thread.

I have used the taper roller kits sold by Pyramid Parts without issue, the kit includes a decent lower seal arrangement. I did not use the top seal to avoid any issues with sufficient top threads. I'm not an engineer so made some measurements of the bottom taper roller height to ensure I put the right shim below the bearing. A simple comparison of bearing thickness/height between original plain bearing and taper replacement was straight forwards. I have a cheapish tool that can remove the bottom races without damage.

The shocker bushes can be a pig to remove depending on the level of rusting - deffo take them out before painting.

I left my swing arm bushes in place on the 400 the powder coating them turn brittle - they virtually fell out so I fitted the brass bushes that NJ sells.

I have no idea if powder coating uses higher temperature than Stove Enameling.

I woke up knackered this morning so I've not done any actual work as such on the bike - just bimbling about.
I had a small surge of guilt/energy at tea time so decided the big box from Delkevic needs to be evicted from the rear lounge.

I walked the box by standing it on end out of the lounge through the hall - into the kitchen out though the conservatory fighting two little Chihuahua helpers through the last two door onto the back yard to my waiting sack trolley.

I have unpacked the various packs of fittings, one pair of pipes is in the Polystyrene box on the freezer, one is on the floor next to the bike ramp.

Brackets are labeled L/T, R/T - L/B, R/B
I assume that left top & left bottom silencers other for the right side.
I can't see any markings on the silencers themselves such as 1,2,3 & 4.
I hope the boxed pairs are for each respective side.

Some instructions would have been helpful - that's me done for today.
I now need to look seriously for the first pipe & bracket to fit having referance to the previous posts on this subject.
I've spotted one silencer has a square rubber bit - to cushion the stand methinks - left side lower silencer then.

The 360 ones on eBay look quite different.

Thanks, interestingly the download parts book shows an R clip at the hub end & a split pin at the frame end!

To fit them you just remove the lever & feed it in - it has a slot that slides into the lever bracket.

Mine fitted but I had to file the end pin down very slightly to get it to work properly.

The wiring colours were different but easy to see how it connected - only two wires!

I am after the above clip described as an 8 mm pin in the parts book ideally in stainless.

Can anyone tell me where I might be able to source a couple of these at sensible money?

In the short term I could use a split pin - I prefer to use the original style of clip - not sure what they are an called S pin?

I think the back story qualifies it for an Out & About Ted👍

As an addendum to the story way back in 1969/70 I collected a brand new Mini Cooper S from Kennings on Queeen street Derby using trade plates (closed decades ago) it was a blue & white one. I drove the vehicle to the garage were I was working during the summer holidays - a Vauxhall Dealer (Allsops)on Bold Lane Derby. The vehicle was bought by an 18 year old lad - yes it was Neil Wheal.

Never saw the Neil or the car until 1973/4 when I saw it advertised in the local paper. I viewed the car but it had a cracked sump that had been bodged with glass fiber - at that time I had no facilites to remove the engine to fix it so I put my best mate onto the car as it was a one owner vehicle. The photo below is me (Navigator) with my mate at the start of the local DFS rally start line - circa 1974/5  yep it was Neils Cooper S - its a small world.

Interesting post! I can't help wondering how do they preserve a fish to go on the wall, they haven't got a pelt or something like other animals.

The lad Neil  went on to become an acomplished amateur Taxidermist this link explains the process for fish.

Out & About / Re: OUT AND ABOUT 2024

For the last two evenings I have had a few hours fishing at a local man made Lake that I only discovered by pure serendipity  about five years ago.

My BiL (Dave) told me the story behind a Pike that was on the wall of a pub in Tutbury in a glass frame for many decades. It transpired that a local lad who was a glass cutter at the Webb Corbett Factory (now flats) caught the Pike when out poaching with Dave one night in a brook near Hilton where there was a small pool caused by an old works dam. Circa 1968-70)

The lad Neil Wheal (sadly deceased) was also an amateur Taxidermist hence the Pike on display in the pub as he was at one time associated with a barmaid at the pub a stones throw from the old glassworks.

As I grew up close to this area I wanted to find out where this pool was as I only knew the Brook as it used to flood part of Hilton every few decades. I went onto Google Maps/Satelite and found this huge lake that you cannot see from any nearby roads except possibly from the newish (30 yrs?) A50 By-Pass.

I drove out to where I thought the Lake was circa 2019, the access road was gated with a lock & chain. I climbed the gate and walked about a fifth of a mile down the road to reach a lafge notice board that gave details of the fishing club that owned the Lake.

I duly paid my £35 a year membership I am now in my fourth year as a member - the price went up to £40 for 2024/5. It transpires that when they were building the A50 the Contractors dug out free gravel for use in the road construction. In the 1950/60s there were a number of Gravel Works in the Hilton Area with a nearby Concrete Works.

What was left behind after the A50 was completed were a few houses that were in the end not demolished but sold off leaving this one area of about 4 or 5 Acres of land with a big hole in it full of construction debris. A  couple of blokes from the Derby Area bought the plot and in a couple of years it became a private fishing club.

The place is full of wild life plus I saw my first ever Red Kite flying overhead a few years ago - probably out on a day trip from further north.

PS Could not load all my fishing tackle on the 400 so went in the car - does this qualify for Out & About. ;D ;D ;D

Brake pressure switch?

It's probably  between my ears rather than reality - when I did my rectification fit of the right bearing instead of using my lump hammer as previously to get it fully home -  I used my Orange Plastic shot filled hammer for the final strike - thinking it might stop a rebound.
