Because the gasket doesn't have any screw locating tabs and it wouldn't stay put I binned it and put a thin bead of black RTV silicon around the edge of the cover.

The sloper is slightly heavier at 269 lb. and claims 17 bhp @10,500

The K6 a bit lighter 264 lb. and claims 20 bhp @ 10,000.

OK so these are only claimed figures and neither machines are in the first flush of youth by the best part of 40 odd years. However, being a touch lighter and with a bit more power theoretically the K6 should be the faster of the two. As always, it all depends on overall maintenance standards and condition of the cycle parts. Seat of the pants road tests must always be considered subjective and sometimes a bit of speedo tuning comes into play via tyre size. Maybe the US has a surplus of redundant and disposable parts so they're not too bothered or precious about blowing a few up? ::)

You say it's in top condition but it can't be if it's that slow. It may be called a sports bike but it is still only a 175 and the performance can be badly affected by wind conditions, rider weight, poor brake set up and even tyre pressures. Also you may be expecting too much; the difference in top speed of Triumph twins like the T120 and TR6 was marginal even though one had twin and the other a single carb. However it sounds like the carbs and air filters need checking out, and if you use 20W50 oil and not 10W40 that may also increase internal drag.

Probably done up by the same twats who tighten spark plugs like they're anchoring a aircraft carrier. >:(

SnapOn tools are really good and I've had mine for over 40 years, just don't buy more of them than you can use!

Yep, 90 degrees is right for the 500 too.

That's a sound idea so if someone could do a quick measurement of the cam height and length from the handlebar there might be some relief for those suffering from over extended wrist action. Stop giggling at the back! :o

I checked mine and it's 10mm x 24.75mm near as damn it.

That's the one thing that annoys me most. It was the same when I had my 400/4; too much rotation from closed to open. Needs a throttle tube with a higher cam.

Is it possible that the pad material has changed since the 1970s? I can't particularly remember having any brake squeaks that couldn't be cured with smear of Cappaslip. Having said that I've gone all over mine and it still squeals like a pig, so maybe it's a toss up between stopping and being quiet! ???

But it does handle quite a lot better than I expected through the twisty bits. The combination of light weight, modern rubber and modest power means I can drive it out of a bend like a 250 and that's more fun, considering both our ages, 8) than it has any right to be! :D

Am I expecting too much from a 1972 500 Four? I'd been riding a 750 fuel injected bike before I bought this bike and the Honda feels "wooly" to me. It goes and revs well but it feels sort of bunged up like someone with a cold. Checked just about everything apart from having the carbs balanced with vacuum gauges. Can anyone recommend a reliable mechanic in West Sussex?

CB500/550 / Re: Revs /mph
« on: July 25, 2020, 01:56:01 PM »
Well thanks to the info received I've calculated that if I multiply my rev counter reading by 1.3333 it will be correct.

That is 60mph @ 3000rpm in top x 1.3333 gives a true reading of 3999.9rpm.

I'm sure that must mean something significant about the gearing inside the rev counter head, and I dunno how it helps but it was something to ponder on rainy day. ::)
