Don't bin them.

One of the guys on here had my old Rickman rack for a rechrome and those old black Rickman boxes must be collectors items!

I dont think anyone will re-manufacture them as the costs would be too great for the limited market

I'm not so sure - they did it for the 350/4

I was in email conversation with Steve Scott earlier this year. He makes single carb manifolds for Goldwings and also CB/4s

Welcome - it was probably me...

Whilst its apart, you might as well inspect everything, although dead big ends are very rare. If the rings are in bits you need to check the bores as you may need to rebore before rebuilding.

Keep us informed as to what you find (with pics if possible)

For those who are really confused, kaceyK2 was originally (and still is) kaceyF2 on the .net site...   ::)

You're right Matthew. My 500/4s all do more like 50mpg  8)

The one in my avatar did indeed have K&Ns, big jets and a Piper exhaust but in those days we didn't give a stuff about mpg!

I'd say welcome back KC, but this is post #1 (?)

Was it on SOHC4 that we were last acquainted?

The K3 carbs ran much leaner (55mpg vs 40mpg for the other 500/550s I owned). Downside was that it would overheat very quickly in the summer if run at a standstill (like in the queue at Silverstone for example...  :-[)

Back in the 70's we had an ingenious solution for this (well, we were all electronics students...):

  • Remove coils (incl HT leads!) and place in nice warm airing cupboard for a few days
  • Rough up area around the HT/coil join with sharp screwdriver - makes purchase for...
  • Apply RTV (Room Temp Vulcanising) rubber compound to seal join

Worked (most of the time - just make sure you don't leave any gaps)

A saw a CBX1000 with a plastic carrier bag wrapped around the coils once - it was melted!

The needles could be worn. They get a "step" in them.

This is a bit of a marathon, but you might pick up some tips as to what would work from here:
