« on: March 17, 2011, 02:35:11 PM »
as the 650 gear seems to be next to non existent and i have the patience of a small child full of adhd and too much sugar i shall be going the electronic route.

now if i run a Z1000 clock will i have any issues ?

or i might go hightech and get a vapour clock.

any recomendations ?

cheers peeps

CB500/550 / clutch springs
« on: February 18, 2011, 09:08:12 PM »
anybody used Barnett or ebc clutch springs ? not bothered about day to day usage just want something a bit more substantial.

i have read putting 6mm washers pre loads the springs for better action but thought i might go heavier duty than that.

thoughts ?

Anyone around this way ?

just took the 550k3 cafe out for a quick pre MOT shake down, the CRs make it pull like a horse but i forgot how totally bullshit the front break is on these old girls, may have to do the twin disk conversion.

cannot wait for the next sunny day for a proper thrash!

good vibes all around

CB500/550 / CARB help
« on: August 14, 2010, 02:18:08 PM »
So gents all help and points welcomed. settle back and i shall tell you the info:

engine: cb550k3 standard with a very mild porting job on the head, more just smoothing than porting, no polishing tho!

carbs: Keihin CR 29mm
Pod Filters
mains: 240
main jets: 120
mixture: 1 1/2 turns out
Needles: right at top position
timing: checked and rechecked (!)
floats: Factory set 14mm
ignition: boyer bransden, with mini coils

So have tried various settings but taken her back to 'out the box' carb settings.

To start her she must be on full choke and i can only get her to 1/3 choke before she dies. i cannot get idle no matter what i do.

when she is on full choke she revs right up with no trouble. when the choke is set at 1/3 when you pull the throttle the engine loses rpm/power. i know she is running lean and i have tried 118 and 122 main jets but i cannot get any kind of idle.

carbs have been bench synced and i have tried different mixtures etc but all the same or worse probs and no idle.

have tried advancing the timing on the stator plate but to now avail.

Need a bit of direction here peeps. how much bigger should i go with the main jets? am i clearly missing something?  ???

(beer tokens for the best answers!)

CB500/550 / good old fashioned british know how
« on: August 02, 2010, 03:15:35 PM »
so got my CR29s fitted all sweet and just dialing them in.

due to the throttle cable length difference from the standard carbs i have switched the return cable to act as the pull on the throttle.

i makes for less turn on the actual throttle but the carbs reach their lock positions.

does anyone foresee any problems with this ? have had it running and it seems o.k, but should the throttle have more travel available for the carbs ?

CB500/550 / carb rubbers for cb550 k3 / cr29 carbs
« on: July 29, 2010, 02:13:48 PM »
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=63228.0;attach=98825;image

any one know what carbs rubbers these are. cr29's dont match up with the manifolds on the cb550 k3.

any help much appreciated as i can't seem to find out what they are ?

CB500/550 / Carbs
« on: July 15, 2010, 02:37:29 PM »
yes you know its that cb550 k3 lean burn carb time!

so she will start but only on full choke, if i reduce to 2/3rds choke she will die. no idle.

so my thoughts are to richen first ? running far too lean or does this sound more like an air leak ? carbs were fully rebuilt with new needles and floats.

floats were set as per book -
running k & N filters.

want to to carb sync but i am right in thinking this will be irrelevant until i can get a solid idle?

all help as always warmly appreciated.

so close but yet so far
