CB350/400 / New silencer to header box leak
« on: March 15, 2021, 04:44:45 PM »
So I bought a new silencer from DS which is great. I notice that I have a slight leak of water ( noticeable when running from cold) from the connection to the header box. It didn't happen with the original Honda silencer. It doesn't appear to be blowing from the joint. I fitted new bracket and seal which required work to get it to fit into the silencer.   Should I ignore it or bodge it ?

CB350/400 / silencer repair/refurbish
« on: May 02, 2020, 04:54:52 PM »
My bike is fitted with an original exhaust system the chrome is very good. However I have noticed a small hole underneath water comes out during idling. Does anybody know if there are any companies out there  that can refurbish these silencers as they are as rare as rocking horse droppings.
When I removed it to check it out  a handful of rust came out which is a shame as it's pretty solid and  sounds good not loud.

CB350/400 / stainless fasteners
« on: April 06, 2020, 05:49:48 PM »
Having got my bike out for service in the hope that I can ride it again soon, I notice that the fasteners holding the cam cover are starting to rust. I have not had these zinc coated when I restored it. I 'm thinking of replacing these bolts with stainless (with copper grease).
What are your feelings on the use of stainless

CB350/400 / Winter storage
« on: October 26, 2019, 04:20:19 PM »
I would be interested to know what members do to store there 400/4 over winter. I stop riding as soon as the gritters come out.
Do you drain the oil and remove the battery after coating brightwork with an oily rag or just throw a cover over it.

CB350/400 / security
« on: July 08, 2019, 10:49:46 AM »
Thinking about  security, I have  a larger heavy chain and lock for the garage but i don't want to lug it around. I have a steering lock but no key. replacements are available from  you know who. What I'm not sure of is how to get at this to replace it. There is a pin and small plate holding the lock assy. in place. Can anybody advise the best and least damaging to paintwork method of getting the thing out.
Answers on a postcard..

what other security options are available

CB350/400 / Speedo inaccurate
« on: June 26, 2019, 10:33:52 PM »
My speedo reads  35mph when doing 30mph, I say this because I pass a camera in my car each day which I'm using for comparison. Can anybody suggest a company that can  calibrate it for me.

CB350/400 / Battery Voltage
« on: February 12, 2019, 08:30:47 PM »
After doing some checks on my bike I am puzzled by some of the voltage readings I have found.
My battery stands at 12.6 volts when ign is off.  I switch on ignition it drops to 11.8 volts with engine  not running.
When I check the voltage on the black and white connectors under the tank that feeds the contact breakers, it is showing  10.6 volts with the wires to the contact breakers disconnected, A loss of over 1.2 volts.
The battery has been charged and is 18 mths old.
What I would like to know is where is that 1.2 volts being lost, is that normal?
The bike runs ok but I believe the spark could be  stronger.

CB350/400 / Cylinder one running cooler than other three
« on: September 11, 2018, 08:15:31 PM »
Having restored my bike and done around 300 miles I notice cyl. one runs cooler from cold start, when hot it's difficult to tell. The carbs all had new DS kits fitted and I balanced carbs twice. The valves were lapped and new rings fitted, new plugs and plug tops. bike now has 34000 on it. No smoke and it pulls well. I have done valves to 3 thou for the hot summer. I thought I knew the answers to most things but not so sure now.  Before I start ripping things apart again I would appreciate your views.

CB350/400 / MOT today
« on: June 13, 2018, 12:37:17 PM »
Well, although I didn't need to, I took my bike for an MOT at the local Honda dealer. It passed with flying colours as it should with the amount of work I've done on it. It marks the end of phase  one of the project. Having taken a 50 ish mile ride on it here are my findings .
It's very smooth and responsive up to 6000 rpm I haven't pushed it any further , new rings to bed in. On the downside I find the front brake is not a two finger affair I have to grab a handful and it appears to fade a little. All parts have been replaced in the front braking system. The top end is still a little rattlly even though I replaced primary and cam  chains and tensioners, I know it's common but there is still room for improvement. Having said that it's a nice a nice ride.

CB350/400 / Almost ready for MOT
« on: May 06, 2018, 07:18:34 PM »
My 400f 4  is almost ready for MOT. The only thing I'm not happy with is the front brake lever. Though not spongy it has more travel than I would like. I have fitted the bushing to the caliper which was missing. I have fitted master cyl kit, pads brake seals etc. Have bled the brake several times carefully. It stops ok but the feel could be better. anybody got any ideas

CB350/400 / Honda 400f 4 Clutch problem
« on: April 19, 2018, 12:34:30 PM »
After refitting the engine following Cam, drive chain and piston rings etc, I find I cant get into neutral with the engine running. On centre stand or with engine turned off no problem. While the engine was apart I filed the fingers on the clutch basket as there was grooves in it. On the centre stand with engine running I can get in/out any gear. I have tried adjustment of clutch every which way. Any ideas?

New Member Introductions / Honda 400f 4
« on: December 06, 2017, 05:36:47 PM »
Hi, thanks for allowing me to join. I have been restoring a Honda 400f 4 for the last 12 months. Got it mostly done now just a few niggles. It misfires mainly at tick over, I have replaced all consumables in the carbs and watched youtube videos. can't see any leaky carb/ head connectors tried the spraying with carb cleaner trick. I have replaced plugs points and plug caps and have double checked all gaps and timings. When restoring I stripped down the engine and replaced both chains and piston rings, one of the pistons was damaged, I replaced just the faulty one, the bores are not scoured and within spec for 33k miles the head had been burned a bit as a result. It starts with one kick sounds ok (when the carbs are full) Not sure where to go with it now. I have not replaced the coils but they read ok Does anybody have any ideas. I lapped the valves and replaced the guide rubbers Any suggestions?

Here is a pic of my bike on day 1, It's a 75 model registered in 77. As you can see the tank is not original, I intend to have it painted, it's sound and I have  lined it. The exhaust appears to be original as are the mudguards and chain guard. I have replaced the handlebars as the riding position doesn't suit me ( I'm getting on in years) I don't intend to go concours just clean and reliable.
