Can someone clarify the 40 year rule for me. I have a bike coming up to 40 in June this year. Normally I wait for the date to actually arrive before changing the V5 to Historic Vehicle, but someone on here mentioned you can do it any time in that year from January 1st. Can anybody say that is the rule, and has anyone been successful doing it before the actual date. Cheers.

If it is 40 in June it will be historic from April 1st next year.
My reading of the rule is that if a vehicle is 40 before 1st January it will be historic from 1st April

You won't be able to do it until 1st of April 2020, a 79 bike is not eligible until them, so in some cases the vehicles actually end up being 41 years and 3 months old. I applied for historic for my 1978 bikes in Jan this year only to have forms sent back saying it can't be done until April 1st.

It's April 1st 2020 in your case Roy. Try anytime before this they will reject it. I changed 5 to Historic on Monday and the newest to qualify was September 1978 registered

I will continue with MOT's on my bikes, regardless of how well we look after them a second pair of eyes can only be a good thing, and yes we know an MOT is really only good on the moment of issue.

Agree. Trig takes it as a personal insult that I still have my Historics MOT'd. He maintains them to an exceptionally high standard and I know they will never, ever fail an MOT but for £20, piece of mind and an up to date record, I personally will keep having them done.

I agree Julie, i was an MOT man and when i first did No36 and took it in somebody must have distracted me as an 8mm nut had fallen off one of the bolts in the front engine plates, techically an arguable fail but they had lots of crate flanged nuts there and just fitted one. We can all make silly errors and also you get into a routine checking things which can miss the obvious!

get a dating letter from Honda,the rule is date of manufacture ,and it could have been in stock for ages before registering

I'm with the MOT gang, my 750 is historic and I did a ground up restoration of it but I still like having another pair of eyes looking it over.

get a dating letter from Honda,the rule is date of manufacture ,and it could have been in stock for ages before registering
Even then you may only get year of manufacture, the best you can do is month when you have a headstock sticker, and that don't wash with the powers that be, and by the time you have paid for the dating documents you may as well pay the tax and get on with it.

The 750 has been on the road for 4 years now. I was going to get a dating letter back then but never got round to it. Historic status is so close now that it's just not worth the effort, plus the reg is the authentic original number it came with and I think that's more important than a correct year reg. 750F2's were so slow to sell I know of one with an 82 reg, I mean who would buy one of those old things when you could have a GS750 for similar money.
