Title: "Honda" seat logo
Post by: Mikep328 on September 01, 2023, 10:35:17 PM
I know that a stencil is available to paint the "Honda" logo on the rear of the 400 seat.  Is there an OEM seat cover available - or complete OEM seat, for that matter - that has the logo?

I got my 350k0 seat cover with a logo on (unusual due to copyright, etc) from P&K Classic
They may do one depending on what model

Thanks, philward!  I tried to call but no answer so I sent them an email enquiring about the CB400 seat covers.  My seat looks new (DSS, I believe) but does not have the Honda logo.  I was interested in the stencil but in looking at pics of the stencil/paint results, they did not look very good to me.

I've done loads of seat stencils, about 15 now, always a nice job to do.

Forgot to say, get the stencil from Piki, Diego Corral and use the correct vinyl paint.

Yes Johnny, it's this one, I've used the same one for years and it's perfect.

It is a lot easier than you think. You apply the stencil decal. Mask off around the area with newspaper to stop any over spray. Spray a very light coats at a time until it has built up and once dry remove all the masking tape and stencil.
If it doesn't look right, just wipe the paint off with nail varnish remover and start again  ;)

I've also used the stencil from piki and the paint recommended by Julie on my 500 - as Trig advised, it's quite easy. I bought the seat cover with the Honda logo on for the 350 because I needed a cover anyway. Would have gone the stencil route otherwise

Just curious - anyone know how OEM seat logos are "installed?"  Are they some sort of hot-stamping or similar?  FWIW, I looked at several U-tube videos of seat painting/stencils and none of them looked acceptable to me...unlike Julies pics.  The ones I saw had substantial bleeding that made them OK if viewed from 20 feet away but amateurish if standing next to the bike.  I suspect that like most things, it requires some practice to get it right. The stencils, from what I understand, are one-use only, right?

Bleeding can be an issue but if the stencil is stuck down properly, they have self adhesive glue on them, and if the paint is sprayed on in many thin layers with the spray can held at the correct angle, it does prevent bleeding. Because our Honda seat covers have a textured finish, it is more difficult than on a smooth vinyl cover. Don't get anxious about it, if it really does concern you, send the seat to me and I'll do it for you.

Thanks Julie, that's a very nice offer.  I'll attempt it myself but if it does not come out well I might strip off the paint and we'll talk!  ;)

It's worth you having a go Mike, you can't do any irreparable damage if it goes wrong. If you do want me to do it, it'll only cost you the price of postage each way as my time to do it will be FOC.

Unless of course the Post Office lose it, which these days is something to consider. Finding a decent seat isn't easy.

Only ever lost one item with the Post Office out of 1000's of dispatches. Hermes have lost some items, hence why I haven't used them for 2 years.

Still a possibility though and considering how rare these parts are getting these days one that you should factor in.

Couriers tend to lose more, lighter fingered employees in my opinion.

Yes but getting hit by a Meteorite from Mars is still a possibility but it won't stop me going out 😁😁😁😁.

You can't get hit by a meteorite from Mars, meteorites are space debris and come from space itself not from a planet.

There is a lot more chance of getting hit by a meteorite from Uranus though, usually on the leg  :) :)

Point of order, meteorites do also come from Mars and other planets. When that planet gets hit it breaks bits off that can come out way. Your otherwise correct that they come from all over.

As for the other strikes.

Hope I haven't stirred an astronomical debate here.

That is true, however how would you know it was from Mars? little green man riding on it waving a Martian flag?

My point was that until the planet gets hit there is nothing coming off that planet, as soon as they enter space however they are just meteorites, irrespective of where they originate.

I've only done one (ie, not practiced spraying the logo prior) and it turned out good Mike - have a go and I'm sure it'll be to your standard

Back in the day when the firm I worked for sprayed door panels for Vauxhall HA Vivas we used vinyl dye to colour the panels that came in a sort of white finish. No washing that stuff off afterwards.

Part of my reluctance comes from one attempt at painting vinyl many years ago.  Had white vinyl seats in a car and I painted them black with "vinyl paint."  Didn't take long to start cracking, flaking, etc so that gave me a very jaundiced view of painting anything flexible.  Admittedly that part of the Honda seat does not really flex much and I ASSume (hope!) that "vinyl paint" is better today than back then...so I ordered the stencil.

Related, and FWIW to anyone interested, in my checking around, I found that a P&K seat cover for the CB400 four is £55 + £4 shipping within in the UK and, per P&K, the Honda logo is heat-stamped as the original was.  I have never fitted a motorcycle seat cover so don't know how hard/easy that might be but the price strikes me as reasonable.

I was going to do the stencil painting outdoors but decided it was safer to do it indoors for fear of Martian meteorites.

It is so much easier to spray a stencil on than to fit a aftermarket seat cover  ;)
D&K got all there seat covers from Bob and i know Bob doesn't heat press any Honda logos after his prosecution from Honda. They may get the covers from another supplier these days as, Bob has not done much since his massive stroke  :'(

Of course, being brand new to this particular motorcycle and any suppliers of components for them, I don't have any personal experience with suppliers/the quality of the parts.  So I'm relying totally on the experience of folks on this site.

Re the heat stamping from P&K, I was wrong when I said they were "heat stamped".  I specifically asked what process was used for the seat logo on their Honda CB400 seat logo.  The response from P&K was:  "They are heat welded, as they should be."  I ASSUMED (incorrectly) that it was the same thing so I said "heat stamped" in my earlier message but in researching I learned that heat stamping and heat welding are different processes.

Very wise, if you get hit by a piece of cheese you'll know that's a moon meteorite as we all know the moon is made of cheese.

There is a massive difference between vinyl dye and paint for vinyl.
